February 14th is around the corner! Have you thought about what to get for your special someone? Classic Valentine's gifts are romantic, but chocolate, flowers, and jewelry can also be major eco-culprits. Go green this year with gifts that honor your love for each other and our planet. Whether you're looking for organic blooms or a project that incorporates your love of recycling, HuffPost Green has an idea for you. Happy Valentine's Day!

Organic Flowers

Everyone loves to receive flowers on Valentine's Day, however, many flowers are grown using harmful chemicals and techniques that damage the soil. Opt for organic flowers instead, which are beautiful for your sweetheart and the earth. Because organic flowers follow the natural growing season, you're less likely to find roses in February, but who minds if you can have a lovely bouquet of anemones like this? Check out California Organic Flowers and Organic Bouquet for flowers that can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.

If you're traveling on Valentine's Day, you could send a virtual Valentine. I’m sharing the message about this new promotion from Godiva because I know that many are busy and a lot of us need a free alternative to expensive gifts this year. http://godiva.bit.ly/67s3PV

Last year my husband went out on a limb after I told him no more flowers. It was the best present because it wasn't just for me, we got to enjoy it together. To me that's the essence of the day, a chance to spend time together enjoying each other. If you're looking for something different you can both have fun with (and romance!) give it a shot, he ordered a "surprise" from Intimate Surprises (they're on the Web only, I think, intimatesurprises.com).

I ordered their Valentine's Surprise for him this year and hopefully it will be just as fun.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Lia Scallon has created a wonderful Angels CD for children. There is story telling and soothing music. It would make a wonderful Valentine's Day gift for children; in fact, her Sounds of Sirius series of CDs offers something for everyone...http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-first-little-angels-on-earth/id337789584

If you don't have the time or kill to make your own fortune cookies, you can buy them in a store (an Asian market, here in Hawaii most grocery stores have an Asian foods aisle, or from a Chinese restaurant) then personalize them by swapping out the standard message with your own message or small gifts, such as cash or small gift certificates (make your own gift certificates for hugs, kisses or a romantic dinner for two - use your imagination). Prepare your messages or gifts by folding them small enough to fit inside a fortune cookie. You will have to do this one cookie at a time and be prepared to move quickly. Place a cookie on a microwave safe plate and heat it on high for 20-30 seconds. The cookie will become soft when hot - it may take longer in low wattage microwave, so increase the time by 5 second increments until the cookie becomes plyable. Remove the plate with the cookie on it from the microwave. The cookie will be HOT, so use gloves or tongs to unfold the softened cookie enough to remove the original message and tuck your folded message, cash or gift into the cookie and then close it back up. It will return to it's hardened state as it cools with your personalized message or gift inside. It's great for valentines, but also gives an original twist to giving cash, gift certificates or any message for any occasion.
