2010 Environmental Performance Index Released (PHOTOS): Which Nation Is Most Eco-Friendly?

Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/03/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 04:20 PM ET

Environmental experts at Yale and Columbia universities released their biannual Environmental Performance Index at the World Economic Forum. The index ranks 163 nations according to their performance on 25 indicators that fall into ten policy categories, which are as follow: environmental burden of disease, air pollution (effects on humans), air pollution (effects on ecosystem), water (effects on humans), water (effects on ecosystem), biodiversity and habitat, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, and climate change.

Iceland dominated the rankings, coming in 1st, while the United States came in at a mediocre 61st, a sizeable drop from its 39th place rank in the EPI's last evaluation in 2008.

However, this year's rankings cannot be compared accurately to the 2008 index, as "the scientists have shifted their methodology slightly as they seek to zero in on the fairest way to quantify the broad and nebulous area of environmental performance," The New York Times reported.

Additionally, since most of the data pulled for the index are from 2007 and 2008, it is not an accurate representation of the Obama administration's efforts to improve, the Times said. All the same, the U.S. falls far behind its fellow industrialized nations such as the United Kingdom, which came in at a respectable 14th place.

We've compiled 10 of the best, worst, and most notable nations in this year's rankings. Which country best addresses your environmental concerns? Which one neglects them the most?

Iceland

Iceland snatched the top spot with its performance on environmental public health, controlling greenhouse gas emissions, and reforestation. According to the Iceland Review, the decision ultimately came down to the fact that nearly all the country's energy comes from renewable resources, such as this geothermal plant.

I cannot understand how Iceland received the #1 ranking for environmental performance when it remains one of the only countries to continue slaughtering whales. Doesn't this count??

There is no "them" and "us" in this picture. Every sewer in the world empties into the oceans; every smokestack on earth belches into the common stratosphere.

the Sahara desert is as large as the entire USA,.

European countries are planning on developing more of those mirror solar collector arrays that turn water to steam and power turbines.

Along with wind power, no need for fossil fuels in future.

Of course the USA is way behind in that kind of tech.

Problem is all power must compete with oi/gas/coall which is virtually free from a btu vs cost to extract. Either the oil must start running out or we must pass the real cost on. Good luck with the later the former is an eventual guarantee.

I would like to see a similar ranking made of American states, as many state and local laws come into play.

Vermont vs. NJ? Maine vs. Florida? No contest!

new jersey has like 12 times as many people as Vermont...same with Maine and Florida, not sure what any of those comparisons would mean...

Canada ranked 46th with its tar sands Toxic industrial lakes, while poor Sierra Leone was last because of "lack the basic environmental amenities and policy capacity to effect cohesive change" .. they are recovering from a long civil war but they don't have industries dumping industrial waste into their environment.

No way, I hear republicans say we're number one on environment, health care, and well everything.. We're number one!!!! This list was made by a bunch of communists Obamaites!!! *throws tea bag* then yells random words like "Deficits!!! Reagan haters!! No government telling me what to do" .... addendum: let me keep my medicare and don't pollute in my backyard :)

Yeah, because all their commercial fishermen quit fishing and starting staying in front of the computer buying stocks. BAck to the nets, boyos.

I don't think they ever left the nets just need to go back to the fishin' nets made of fishing net stuff instead of the internets made of a series of tubes.

If we harnessed the geothermal activity in this country; i.e., in Yellowstone, how much energy would that supply?

The Earth houses a vast energy supply in the form of geothermal resources. Domestic resources are equivalent to a 30,000-year energy supply at our current rate for the United States!

Simply use more efficient turbines in dams to double power generation!

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/11/us-hydropower-production-could-double-steven-chu-doe-energy.php

Also any river running at 4 to 5 MPG can generate electricity using slow moving river turbines.

A plausible, fairly constant source of energy under certain criteria. River needs to have fairly fast flow (e.g. 3-4 knots). Turbines need to be able to withstand debris and ice. Slow turbine speed required to be fish friendly. Proximity to power users preferred to avoid losses in transmission. Ability to rotate with direction of current.

Absolutely, just look at Hoover Dam and how much power that provides. Henry Ford used turbine power to power the first Ford plant, which is right across the Mississippi River from me.
11:51 AM on 02/02/2010
Do you realize how much politics plays in all this? Let's look at the Hoover Dam. Have you ever gone on the tour? I used to go often when I lived in Vegas and friends visited. They have 17 turbines. Typically 3-4 are turning. I asked why only that many and was told that it was for "maintenance reasons." When I pressed harder the guide said "well if they ran them all the price of electricity would fall too much". Even though this is just an opinion, I think this is true.

Also, Las Vegas gets none of it's electricity from Hoover, they have to buy it from a coal fired plant in Arizona. This was a "deal" hammered out long ago. So, I guess to summarize, before using more efficient turbines how about we utilize the ones that are there currently?
