The Ugliest Fruits And Vegetables (PHOTOS)

Walk into your local big supermarket chain, and you're likely to be greeted with rows of shiny, uniformly shaped fruits and vegetables. We at HuffPost Green, however, believe that beauty isn't just skin deep. Often, picture-perfect veggies are the result of industrial agriculture. Organic farming can often produce extremely delicious and nutritious vegetables that don't exactly look like supermodels. So let's celebrate the awesome, tasty, little known, and under-appreciated red-headed stepchildren of the vegetable world!

CHECK THEM OUT:

Carrots

This pair of root vegetables look more like crustaceans than carrots. Full of β-carotene -- which is metabolized in humans as vitamin A -- give these these weird looking specimens a taste!

Durian is so good. It's sweet and has such a great creamy taste. I love it. Plus, you're always looking for more because the fleshy parts are in different chambers of the fruit. Hurts like heck to crack it open though if you're not experienced. There's a trick to it.

Rambutan is so tasty as well, sweet and like the texture of grape.

Although, I wonder how anyone would think to eat these fruits in the first place because they don't look like they are safe to eat from the outside, haha.

If it smells so bad when you open it, how do you tell when it goes bad?
07:01 PM on 02/02/2010
Haha, I would agree it doesn't smell great at first, since you've yet to acquire the taste, but it doesn't smell like sewer or garbage or whatever people have been saying. it just smells like Durian, and once you've tasted it and like it, then you will know that it doesn't smell bad at all, just unique and strong.

The durian wins hands down IMO. "tastes like heaven, smells like hell'. I ate one once when I had a cold and couldn't smell anything. It does taste good, but the smell is like vomit.

& an interesting fact: It is illegal to sell durian on the sidewalks , (street vendors) in Singapore, because of the smell.

I was told coming back from a visit to Thailand that it was illegal to take durian onboard an aircraft. I can just imagine the origin of that law : )

i've tried the "king of fruits." it smells just like natural gas. my professor is from asia and tells us stories about the fruit and how it is banned some places. he bought some to class one day. it was tasted weird to me and was squishy. i didn't like it at all. only one other person didn't like it. everyone else enjoyed it. i read somewhere that u either love it or hate it. there is like no specific taste either. everyone tasted something different. it actually was a little spicy to me.

My mother (Jamaican) always want Chayote (Cho-Cho) to be put into soups. I hate that vegetable, it tastes very nasty.

The odor of the Durian is odd. There is no odor like it. When a person who has never been exposed to durian smells one the brain plays a trick, associating the durian with a known smell, commonly sewage. Once you have smelled it a few dozen times the odor gets imprinted in your brain as unique. The brain then commonly re-relates this smell into the heavy, earthy, flower catagory.

Most people that are prejudice to durian haven't let their brain cells realign the odor, with the smell of something being most of the 'taste' we perceive.

I had durian flavored ice cream in Sydney a few years ago and to me, the taste reminded me of diesel fumes.

I don't want to eat anything that once reminded me of sewage. I don't care how many times I've smelled it.

I ate a rambutan for the first time about 12 years ago when I visited South East Asia. They are so unattractive but so delicious!

I've always insisted it isn't a fruit but the egg of some alien race. Yummy though!

I bought one at the farmer's market recently, out of curiosity. It was odd at first, but really did taste good!
