BERLIN — A U.S. military helicopter crashed in western Germany on Wednesday, killing all three people aboard, according to a spokesman for U.S. Army Europe.

The aircraft went down about 6:20 p.m. (1720GMT) Wednesday in woods near the A67 highway between Viernheim and Lorsch, south of Frankfurt, Hesse state police said.

The helicopter was a UH-60 Black Hawk, said U.S. Army Europe spokesman Bruce Anderson.

The Black Hawk is used for air assault and other military operations. It is normally designed to carry 11 combat-loaded troops.

Seems a lot of people are asking why U.S. troops are still in Germany.
There several main reasons.
1. Most Europeans ( especially the older generation)feel better if U.S. troops are in Germany. You never know....
2. Europeans got addicted to U.S. bearing most of the cost of European security.
3. Because U.S. is global empire. Like it or not our European states are allies.... in the way Greek city states was Roman Republic's allies, for awhile..
4. Russia.

Helicopters scare me. Too many moving parts.

A lot of things have to go wrong to make an airplane stop flying. A lot of things have to go right to make a helicopter fly.

Trying this again...why are we still in Germany with our military so many years AFTER the fall of the Soviet Union??? Is German beer really that good?

For your information: yes, the German beer is that good.

Germany serves a purpose as a base for the USA in the heart of Europe. Like most wounded troops from Iraq are flown into military hospitals in Germany for treatment before they fly home. Has nothing to do with WW2 or even occupation, it is simply a strategic issue. Quite a few Americans stay in Germany after their service, get married to German women and live over here.

Our remaining bases in Germany are mainly used as staging and maintenance locations. We transport crew and cargo in and out of West Asia through German bases and also use them to service most of the transport and aerial refueling aircraft.

We also operate some F-16s and A-10s as part of the NATO Allied Forces Europe. We deployed combat aircraft from Germany in 1999 as a part of the Kosovo War.

Our imperial basing structure isn't about defending the host nations. It's about positioning our military assets for the projection of force. It's an offensive posture. Germany and Japan are the crown jewels of the American military empire through which we project force across the Eastern hemisphere.

Just curious WHY the US military has stayed in Germany after the collapse of the Soviet Union?? Is German beer so good and the kraut so tasty rthat we refuse to leave?? Whom are we protecting there?

My deep and heartfelt condolences to the families of these American heroes.

at last count we had defeated the Germans in WWII. Time to get out of their country. They are actually pretty well situated now. We're not, because we are too busy flying helicopters around in other countries for no apparent reason except to protect our financial interests in the Arab world.

What don't you get?
