Sea Lion Writes In Chinese (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/05/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:25 PM ET

Not only are sea lions adorable and can do amazing tricks, apparently they can also write, and in Chinese, no less. The sea lion seems to get a little nudge in the right direction from his instructor, but all the same, it's pretty impressive.

Animal exploitation
How do we know it did not involve beatings?

You can tell by the lack of temerity in the animal.

Lost my mood ring. Not sure how I feel about that.

I scuba dive in California, and I consider myself very lucky for the dives I've spent with sea lions. They are so playful, so fearless. Supple torpedoes. Once while snorkeling south of Santa Monica, I was surprised by one playfully nibbling at my fin. Even for someone who spends a lot of time in their habitat, this is extremely rare...they usually love to look closely but never touch. And usually once they realize they've got your full attention, they fly away. This one's curiosity far outweighed any fear however. I offered it my fist to sniff (offering it my open hand would have been too risky), and the next thing you know, it rolled over onto its back and let me scratch its tummy just like a dog! For a full 10 minutes! I mention this because it was truly one of the most awe-inspiring, humbling moments of my life thus far...to feel like you're actually communicating and sharing affection with a completely wild animal that is in no way forced or enticed to be with you, unlike when you're in a marine park or when offering food. I can't say "beautiful" enough. I felt like the Sea Lion Whisperer. :-D

Exploitation of animals comes in all forms.

It's a good thing that sea lion had the guy along to "help" him.

What a load of crap.

Hey, that sea lion was getting a little too much help (or supervision) from his trainer. What's the risk of the sea lion writing about his living conditions.

What am I supposed to write here?
12:29 AM on 02/04/2010
Japanese uses the Chinese alphabet. If one were to write a letter such as in this prose here, what langauge would say it is in? None. It's one letter that is used in multiple languages.
08:48 AM on 02/04/2010
The Chinese written language does not have an alphabet.

It does have thousands of different hanzi, or characters, each of which has its own pronunciation and meaning.

OK. I've been told by speakers of both Japanese and Chinese what I claimed. That's my basis for what I said, no expertise on my own. Now you wrote what you wrote.

Will you please explain why you claim there is no alphabet when it seems to me you just defined one. The distinction you're drawing is one-sided; you don't describe the initial that you are contrasting with what you say (said). I need to have it--no pun intended but it is a nice one--spelled out for me. Thanks
