Google's Super Bowl ad: 'Parisian Love'

Google aired a Super Bowl commercial during today's Saints-Colts contest, breaking the company's longstanding opposition to TV and brand advertising. Google CEO Eric Schmidt tweeted yesterday that "someone said 'Hell has indeed frozen over'" after urging his followers to "be sure to watch the ads in the 3rd quarter."

In 2006, Schmidt said that brand advertising is "the last bastion of unaccountable spending in corporate America." The CEO explained the company's decision to air the ad in a blog post tonight:

If you watched the Super Bowl this evening you'll have seen a video from Google called "Parisian Love". In fact you might have watched it before, because it's been on YouTube for over three months. We didn't set out to do a Super Bowl ad, or even a TV ad for search. Our goal was simply to create a series of short online videos about our products and our users, and how they interact. But we liked this video so much, and it's had such a positive reaction on YouTube, that we decided to share it with a wider audience.

If you like it too, we hope you'll watch the others. Enjoy.

Scroll down to watch 'Parisian Love.'

The ending made it too cloying and pat for me.

Google can redeem themselves if next year we see the girl searching for divorce lawyers and child support.

Yea, I hear a baby at the end, but I also hear a dog panting or as they say in French chien.

How godless am I - when he searched "churches in paris" I thought he was looking for fried chicken!
Nice ad though.

Whatever Google paid for this ad, they got their money's worth.

This would have been my favorite had that Betty White/Abe Vigoda/Snickers commercial not aired. THAT was hysterical. This one for Google was very touching. Got me a little teary eyed.

They had to advertise, Microsoft is doing everything it can to destroy them with Bing, given MS' track record of bringing down giants simply with marketing and leverage regardless of product quality, Google couldn't just sit back and watch...

so...does anyone know what agency did this? Or does google have inhouse marketing for such things? It was a great piece that not only kept my attention, but actually sold the product, rather than merely being an ego-driven flight of fancy...it stood out because it was sentimental rather than a sad attempt at cheap comedy with a logo thrown in at the end...

The software used to make it is available for $100 and the music is extremely simple to do... wouldn't shock me if it was done in-house

it would be easy to produce, but someone had to come up with the concept, someone had to write the story then translate it to the simplest terms through google searches...all the while, highlighting the features of google...production low, concept high.
