American Airlines Blankets Will Cost 8 DOLLARS

DALLAS — If you want a pillow and blanket in coach on American Airlines, it's going to cost you.

The airline will charge $8 for a pillow and blanket in coach class for domestic trips and some international flights longer than two hours, beginning May 1. The international flights are to and from Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Central America.

Spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said Monday it was an economic decision.

"American evaluates all aspects of the business to ensure that economic decisions are prudent and strategic for the long-term success of the company," she said.

Huguely said blankets will remain complimentary in premium-class cabins and in all cabins for other international flights.

The airline will sell a blue fleece blanket with an inflatable neck pillow in a clear zippered pouch, and will throw in coupon for $10 off a $30 purchase at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Huguely said.

JetBlue and US Airways charge $7 for a blanket-and-pillow set, with US Airways adding eye shades and earplugs.

Airlines have steadily added and increased fees for other services such as checking luggage and buying tickets from a reservation agent since 2008, first to help cover jet fuel costs, then to offset large losses.

American parent AMR Corp. lost $1.47 billion last year – and $3.59 billion in the past two years – as traffic fell during the recession and competition limited American's ability to raise fares.

Another ridiculous fee. Crappy "food", crappy beverage, crappy seats, crappy air in flight, crappy service, crappy baggage screeners (thieves), crappy on time performance.

Our airlines are starting to sound like the old Soviet Russian airlines. The miracle of the modern deregulated "free market" at work - a race to the bottom in quality, service, and safety.

I'll drive, thanks.

Will there be an extra charge for small pox infested blankets?

I fly AA a lot. Last year I was Platinum, this year just Gold. Now people will be bring their own bedding on. I can see it now, big ol blankets, quilts, king size comforters. Somebody will be going down the isle with way to much carry on and that big ol bed spread getting caught up on everything. Then the stewardess will be on the PA yelling at everyone to hurry up so we can have an on time departure. I think boarding would be faster if more people checked their luggage. I think it should be mandatory myself.

If AA goes bankrupt, I will have no sympathy for them. It would be easy to just blame management, but the front line employees at American are just as bad.

I fly SWA every chance I get. They still seem to get it.

SWA does not charge all these ridiculous fees and has the most courteous crews. I use to have to fly AA often internationally and now would gladly refuse a free ticket if offered. They are abusing their passengers with these nickel and dime tactics. If they are having problems running their business, the first direction they should look is taking better care of their customers.

What a great idea. All airlines should try this.

Had this been in effect on Xmas day then that terroris*t b*omber might not have had enough cash to buy a blanket to cover his attempt at det*onation over Detroit!

AA is approaching levels of zero service, cutting corners everywhere and still is not competitive. This airline will have to file for bakruptcy of they want to be competitive against Delta

Do not pay it. Bring your own on as apparel, put it around your shoulders and wear it.
It will not only be better quality, it will be clean.

I remember the good ol' days when airlines pampered you. Now you're lucky to get a free bag of peanuts. You can't get free movies on domestic flights anymore on a coach ticket. You have to pay for your bags after you already paid the fare. It's a sign of the times. There's no such thing as a free pillow anymore.

It is BYOB & BYOP time if you are traveling.

Wow... I wonder what they charge for a clean blanket, most of those blankets aren't washed for a week at a time.

One industry's failings is another's opportunity.
How about Obama does something win-win for a change and make rail-travel AND rail- shipping a new WPA employment priority. Shipping and travel could reciprocally subsidize each other.

Anyone who has taken Amtrak to get to a long distance destination has been introduced to the idea that travel is once again the fun it used to be. All the cattle-car miseries gone. But it is really pricey.

And since I live in a train town and can see them close up as they go by , the cars are often way too empty when they could be filled by inter-city travellers who now are not about to pay ransom to go 60 miles each way.
Maybe they could start by giving those over 60 a really decent discounted rate instead of a pittance for those on fixed incomes. And keep those slow old drivers off the congested roads as a bonus.
If you want people eto us mass transit, you need to give them an incentive to do so.

I am stunned by how much the Post Office is charging to get a small package (one pound one ounce) former eto there. $8.00 for a tiny package form Seattle to Pasadena, Are you kidding?

Take away some of the regional pork-barrel endowments and put it toward restoring to the nation something that it was such a mistake to lose in the first place.

Agreed. It's annoying that this country is so far behind Europe and Asia.

Here's a positive note -- you won't (hopefully) get a dirty blanket.
