East Africa's First Skatepark (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/10/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:25 PM ET

Frustrated with the lack of concrete around for skating, kids in Kitintale, a poor suburb of Kampula, Uganda, decided to take matters into their own hands.

Without any help from the government or large NGOs, the kids decided to make their own skate park.

WATCH the video below for an inspiring look at the way the skatepark helped bring together young people in one of the poorest parts of the world.

The video comes from Swiss photographer Yann Gross. Check out some of his photos of the skatepark here.

The skatepark also has its own website that you should check out.

It is great to see these kids empowering themselves. I used to love skateboarding, wish I could still do it.

Ahhhh, finally something uplifting in the World section.

I throw around the phrase "Skateboarding saved my life" pretty regularly and people don't seem to understand how that could possibly be the case, but I absolutely mean it. From now on I'm just going to link them to that video.
