Toyota Flies Plant Workers To Washington To Lobby On Company's Behalf

WASHINGTON — Jim Shuker, who tests vehicles for Toyota, says he feels so strongly about quality that he believes he personally failed by not finding the company's acceleration problem.

Shuker was among 23 Toyota workers from across the country who were flown to Washington at company expense to fight Tuesday for their employer's reputation.

They're trying to sway lawmakers just as several congressional committees have launched investigations of Toyota's response – and that of the government – to complaints about sticking gas pedals in numerous models and brakes on the 2010 Prius hybrid.

It's all part of Toyota's attempt to repair its once-stellar, but now tarnished, reputation.

The company is sending the message through its professional lobbyists, its dealers and now the workers who say they're always ready to pull the cord that stops an assembly line if something is wrong.

"I feel I failed customers by not finding this issue," Shuker said of the unintended acceleration problem. "We were not able to duplicate it."

Shuker, who works at Toyota's proving grounds in Wittmann, Ariz., said he was not aware of the problems before they exploded in the media.

Marge Schwendemann, who works at the company's Bodine Aluminum plant in Troy, Mo., is a quality control specialist who said she could confront the facility's top manager any time she finds a flawed engine bracket, cylinder head or cylinder block made there.

She said the company's problems were "blown out of proportion. It's a runaway train."

Fibbiyon Miller, who works in the Huntsville, Ala. plant, said she still has faith in the company and the plant that makes V6 and V8 engines for Toyota trucks.

"Toyota is not on a pedestal any more," she said. "But I think we're still tops in my eyes, high in quality and safety."

Tim Turner, an assembly safety specialist at the Georgetown, Ky. plant, said, "Toyota's my life."

That's why he went to a local dealership several days ago and vacuumed cars so he could reassure customers.

"It's not that you're not going to make mistakes, it's how you handle the problem," he said. Turner predicted that Toyota would use this experience to "create a better system of communication across the whole world."

As a former employee at a Toyota Plant in Canada I could tell you there have been problems and cost cutting in every corner of Toyota's plants for years. Well before 2000.

So, there's plenty of money to send these lazy, overpaid, deadbeat union workers on a busman's holiday to DC to cry before lawmakers about how hard they work, what with their job banks and no layoff contracts and 75$ an hour jobs where they do nothing all day, build garbage vehicles and need a court order before they will do anything they are told to.

It's these unions that are killing America, I tell you.

Huh? What' that?

Toyota's what?

Never mind.

I would happily buy a Toyota. Despite the recent recalls, Toyota remains one of the longest lasting best built and supported automobiles on the market. This all has the feel of a government witch hunt against foreign cars. While I wish I could support American made I've been duped by cars that seem to have been built to fall apart.

You are so wrong... their quality is terrible and has been for quite a while ...I feel for these people but I know people who work for transplants they have no say in anything. These are token Americans Toyota has trotted out...nothing more. You buy foreign anything...the money goes home and supports that country's GDP-not ours...Toyota has final assembly plants...which provide a few job, One big three job provides 10 times the amount of related jobs...and the money comes home. You keep Americans employed when you buy American... Buying foreign stuff is sta bbing your country in the back.

Well, at least Toyota is starting to make some PR moves on this - still, about 3 touchdowns behind. Fast on the road (literally) to having car brands that will be synonymous with unsafe (witness the Ford Pinto and Explorer issues from the past).

The Explorer overcame those issues and I predict Toyota will too. People like their Toyotas and most of them are not driving off the road due to a gas pedal or brake problem. (I have no dog in this fight, my car is a VW)

The media is hammering Toyota, wish they would take on the Senate in the way they have this company.

While this statement of yours may hold some validity, what has occurred is the dissipation of the cloud of smug surrounding Toyota. As it turns out, they only make machines. Defectively engineered, and as we're seeing, gremlin-ridden machines.

Toyota has lied to their customers and allowed unsafe cars on the road...which lead to de aths...listen to the tape of the family who di ed in a Lexus which by the way has not been recalled in California...You want to defend this sort of behavior then do so...but most thinking Americans will not buy Toyota because how could they ever be sure they are safe...I love my kids and would not drive one.

Toyota managed to go from efficient small car and truck maker to oversize ridiculous car and truck maker.I just call the big pick-ups pie holes.Face stuffed, nothing new, shitboxes .You could convert my '97 Cheyenne to greasel or electric and cause way lees damage. That South Park fart smelling connoisseur episode rings too true.Does Japan even care about what Americans drive ? Chevies and hummers are going to be made in China why wouldn't Toyota try to gain in that market before stroking this one ? Maybe make the Toyota workers wear grease on the soles of their shoes so they can experience non-braking.

The box reads "Made in the USA" but the part inside was made in China.GM used to hire mom and pops to assemble some parts at home.Switches and similar stuff. That was years ago.I can't remember if my stock replacement distributor cap was made in America but the I know the whole truck was built in Canada.GM moved factories around and build quality suffered.I would buy something else probably.Critical part failures plagued my p/u and it really was one(97 Cheyenne) that still looked like a truck. It was great when it wasn't breaking. Now I don't have to depend on a pick up when I did buy after the Chevy I bought a Honda. It had a longer warranty and handles like a Subaru or an Audi.I gave it to my mom for winters and a taller view of the road.

OMG LISTEN TO THIS...

WE HAVE ONE OF THE PRIUS SUBJECT TO RECALL AND JUST LAST NIGHT I HIT A HIGH MANHOLE COVER APPROACHING A RED LIGHT WITH CARS STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME AND FOR ABOUT A FULL, TERRIFYING SECOND AFTERWARD THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD...THE BREAKS ACTUALLY MOMENTARILY STOPPED WORKING. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. YOU HIT A BUMP AND THE BREAKS RELEASE.

YOU JUST WATCH THOUGH, SOME GOP SENATOR WILL BE TELLING ME THAT MY CAR IS FINE. THAT THE REAL PROBLEM IS BARACK OBAMA AND TOO MANY GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS.

Unless all roads are smooth in the U.S. I'd advise Prius & Camry owners to park, then exit, their vehicles. Park all of the suspect Toyotas for now. That'd be safer.

Danger.

As far as buying foriegn autos, if you prefer to send your paycheck overseas to economies that are in ten times better shape than ours just to save a few bucks on repair bills be my guest, just don't sit and complain about your own country's economy after you write that check. I would rather support so called "government motors," their "terrible unions" and the country that raised me rather than have 80% of every dollar flying to Asia and a small percentage staying here to support the American based factories these foreign manufacturers boast about. No matter how many vehicle's the foreign nameplates produce in America it doesn't hold a curtain to the amount of jobs our auto industry encompasses in the states as a whole. So you can sit back and say whatever you like, let Consumer Reports be your Bible and choose your next vehicle. Funny thing, they recently rated the Suzuki SX4 a best buy.....funny that 50% of the banks in this country won't consider financing one for you because of their track record however, apparently their good enough for that golden Consumer Report seal of approval...

So many communities in the United States have their Chamber(s) of Commerce which extol the virtue of patronizing local businesses.
Against the backdrop of a WalMart*-dominant world.
For the reason(s) which you allude to.

No foreign car is made in America...none. A few are assembled in America which provides a few jobs...far fewer then one domestic jobs which provide 8 to 10 jobs for every line job and the money goes home to a foreign country to pay for their schools and infrastructure, reduce their debt...it is not added to our GDP. You want to save your kids from debt grow the American economy buy American.

That is true to a point. That point is following the profits. The profits go out.
12:15 AM on 02/10/2010
As for the last comment and the "government agenda" ideas, I highly doubt that China/Japan, a region of the world that we are in billions of debt to are going to sit back and let us sabotage one of their largest manufacturing businesses without putting up a fight. The government and media didn't rip apart the American auto manufacturers just this past year for their failures? Did you have an operating TV at the tme and were you watching the news, just wondering? I think some you people need to take your blinders off and accept the fact that unfortunately not every foreign car is "perfect" as the media brainwashes us to believe, Toyota and Honda screwed up just as many other auto companies have in the past, accept it and move on.

Most of us who drive toyotas or hondas (I drive honda), do so, not because of media brainwashing, but because of personal experience. I'm on my second Honda, it's got 130,000 miles on it and I've not had to do any major repairs yet, just change the oil and keep up with maintenance. The brakes alone lasted 70,000 miles. When American cars begin to compete on this level, I will pay attention. As it is I've known plenty of people who have driven their hondas and toyotas 200,000 or 300,000 miles. Some of us cannot afford "throw away" cars.

Toyota competes with government motors so the government is trashing them. Big surprise. I don't recall the government trashing the big three every time they have a recall.
