Boyfriends, girlfriends, lovers and spouses may come and go, but your pets are always there for you. In honor of Valentine's Day, we'd like to recognize that love comes in many forms, and Valentine's Day can be about more than just typical romance. We've compiled some of the sweetest animals out there, but we know we've missed thousands of other impossibly cute pets. Is there an animal in your life that you love? A comment about the winner: (Part 2)
Malnourished and scruffy, Winston won my wife's and my heart in a moment and he has over the subsequent months in our home, blossomed into a happy 70 lb. boy with an amazing capacity for love and forgiveness. Never one to hold a grudge for how he and his sister had been treated, he loves to run and play with other dogs or impress you with his intelligence and willingness to please. He's a rescue pup with an indomitable spirit and a carefree personality and if he could talk, I'm certain he would ask all of us to shut down the puppy mills and turn our hearts to the shelters and pounds which are struggling to care for the many thousands of cats and dogs whose only wish is for a loving home and a chance to please a caring owner.
All of the pets in this Valentine's Day photo contest are special and deserving to be #1. Surely, by the fact that they were in this contest, they already are #1 in the hearts of their "people." Thank you, Huffington Post for this wonderful opportunity and forum.

So I can't help but noticing something odd about your "win." Ratings for various entries rise and fall pretty gradually over the course of the day, but somehow every morning every single entry that has made it above yours has suddenly and drastically dropped way out of the running. Every single one. Every day. You're always back at the top by a large margin, but instead of all the top puppies being in the 9s, most of the former top contenders are now down in the low 7s. Not that I wish to accuse you of anything... it just seems very strange. I hope you're very proud.

I'm not quite sure if you are accusing me of something or not. If you are, I'm sorry, because such an assumption on your part couldn't be further from the truth. What is happening however is that Winston has a great deal of support from a broad population base, which includes such organizations as The Labradoodle Rescue Assns. in the U.S. and Britain, as well as several of the northeastern Ohio dog shelters. Winston's story may have also moved quite a few people to vote on his behalf, since he represents the plight of so many wonderful animals who are now homeless through no fault of their own.

FWIW, dogdayafternoon, I noticed the same thing, particularly regarding my baby goat, Pasqualina, who went from a 9.2 and second place one night when I turned off the computer to a 5.9 and #118 the next morning. Good thing I never told her she was entered, or she'd have been hanging her goat head that day...as it is, she's smiling as ever :)

A comment about the winner: (part 1)
Winston, the blonde Labradoodle sniffing the flowers is representing all of his fellow canine and feline brothers and sisters who find themselves incarcerated in shelters, pounds and rescue centers all across this country. The vast majority of them are in these places due largely to the indifference, stupidity, vanity, foolishness or cruelty of man. Sadly many of them have lost their homes because of the present economy and the fact that their homes have been foreclosed and their owners unemployed. Thank you, Wall Street, NAFTA and the banking industry!
Only 18 months old, Winston he was found running free with his sister, both of them virtually skin and bones. For whatever reason their previous owner had abandoned them in a wooded park near Cleveland, Ohio, to fend for themselves and after several months, they were eventually captured and placed in a local pound. Winston's smaller chocolate colored sister was adopted fairly quickly, but her brother languished in "prison" for several more weeks apparently because of his imposing size and overly enthusiastic personality.

Isn't he a love? He was given away because of the recession. One look at him in that cage and there was no doubt he was coming home with me. One of the best decisions in my life! Amazing disposition, always affectionate and follows me like a pup everywhere.

Ollie is feeling more spry, thank you, but we have to be careful that he doesn't have a relapse. Still on meds......

No, I'm not in that "blizzard" (I'm on the West Coast). I hope you aren't in that blizzard, either. I've lived in the Midwest in the past. I empathize with the challenges of anyone in that "blizzard", right now.

Torties are so special. I have one. I adopted her because no one wanted her. No one would *even* look at her at the time, she was available for adoption. Let's face it, Mother Nature isn't always fair to Torties; sometimes their markings are rather sloppy and very uneven.

I adopted her with her adorableTabby brother. She has the sweetest disposition, and her brother is luvable, too. A happy cat tale story!

My girl was a stray for 3 years where I currently live. I saw her about a week after I moved in and fell totally in love with her. After a year of gaining her trust, I brought her inside and she's the most amazing cat. I've raised my other cats, since they were kittens, and Czari is the only one who will sleep in my arms and sit on my lap.

We got our tortie to be a companion to our big boy Syrik. In keeping with the Russian theme, we named her Czarina (his name means grey in Russian).

Czarina's markings look like she was either supposed to be an orange tabby and someone got distracted with a black paintbrush, or the opposite. Her coat reminds me of a wild thing-like a hyena. Total camouflage.

She is shamelessly in love with my husband.'
