Cow Burps, Farts: Controlling Their Methane Emissions (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/13/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:30 PM ET

Cows produce hundreds of liters of methane gas every day, from two bodily functions that are difficult to control-- burps and farts. But now, researchers in Argentina have designed a device that will allow them to control how much toxic gas they emit in real time, Reuters reported.

Why isn't this on the comedy thread?

I mean, no one really takes this crap seriously, do they?

Utterly ridiculous! Stop blaming the livestock and blame the Corporateers in Agribusiness for the mismanagement of our natural resources. Grow some more trees to absorb the gases, let the animals defecate in the grass and soil to maintain natural nutrients for real fields, feed our animals the proper diets and nature will take care of itself. Cows with no trees, no, grass and chemicals and grounded up dead cows for food will always create bad things. Who created them? Agribusiness. We must evolve into better and more logical thinkers. Separate Corporation and state and work with mother nature and not against her.

What ever we do don't stop or reduce the amount of COAL we burn for electricity!

Wouldn't the MONEY being spent to capture cow farts and burps be better spent
on putting solar panels on homes in America?

Talk about lessening the amount of COAL being burnt, which should lower prices as demand comes down, which show lower the cost of living for AMericans, which should help the Middle Class and Economy recover...

and the ONLY reason not to do the above is COAL is paying for it NOT to happen

Trying to train raccoons to follow the cows with lighters is just wrong.

I see where this is going. Carbonated drinks for humans will be regulated because they make you belch. The vegetarians won't be so green anymore because they eat beans to compensate for protein and we all know the net result of that.

It's all coming folks ... and get ready to strap on one of those cow devices as well ...

If you believe that then try going down into a mine shaft sometime.

Its explosive more than anything else. But yes, in a closed space its more possible to get a toxic dose.

The REAL methane problem, is the BLM... or whichever agency and regualtory red tape is responsible for no allowing Coal Mines to use coal bed methane productively. instead of using the methane productivly, they are forced to vent it off into the atmosphere.

TO be poisonous it must be in high, concentrated amounts.

That is wrong.Methane killed more than a few people that have tried to "harvest" cow farts and manure.Claiming it is non-toxic is mean.

I wonder if allowing cows to eat grass instead of corn might help. I bet their digestive tracks are all mucked up due to their unnatural diet. But hey, if we all eat less meat and that would help too.
