Rachel Maddow Stuns Rep. Aaron Schock By Calling Out His Spending Hypocrisy (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/16/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:30 PM ET

A heated exchange took place during NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when MSNBC host Rachel Maddow accused Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) of hypocrisy for railing against a spending bill in public while touting its benefits in his home district.

Appearing alongside each other during a panel session, Maddow pivoted from a discussion on job creation to note that Schock had appeared at an event on Friday touting a grant program that he had voted against.

"You, in your district, I just read that you were at a community college touting a $350,000 green technology education program, talking about how great that was going to be for your district," she said. "You voted against the bill that created that grant. That's happening a lot with Republicans sort of taking credit for things that Democratic bills do and then Republicans simultaneously touting their votes against them and trashing them. That, I think, is a problem that needs to be resolved within your caucus. Because you seem like a very nice person but that is a very hypocritical stance to take."

A somewhat taken-aback Schock insisted that Republicans were "not consulted on the stimulus bill" and shouldn't be blamed for the lack of a bipartisan vote for its passage. This didn't really get to Maddow's point. So after some back-and-forth among the other panelists, Schock jumped back in.

"I think the argument that liberals are making is absolutely ridiculous," he said. "With all due respect, Rachel, does that mean you are going to give back your Bush tax cuts that you continue to rail against. The fact of the matter is our country operates and is governed by a majority. And I, along with almost all my Republican colleagues and a good number of Democrats, have voted against the stimulus, the omnibus and all this runaway spending. But we lost those battles in the House... At the end of the day my constituents and their children and grandchildren will be on the hook for the deficit being created by this majority and they deserve to their fair share of federal spending."

New York Times columnist David Brooks -- appearing alongside Maddow and Schock -- chimed in to suggest that the argument over who should take credit for the stimulus' successes exemplified what was wrong with Washington. But that debate seems likely to only grow in prominence leading up to the 2010 elections. This past week, the Washington Times reported that a host of Republican lawmakers were doing exactly the same thing that Schock was -- only with a bit more insincerity.

"More than a dozen Republican lawmakers, while denouncing the stimulus to the media and their constituents, privately sent letters to just one of the federal government's many agencies seeking stimulus money for home-state pork projects," the paper reported.

Regarding Schock's appearance at the green technology education program ribbon-cutting ceremony, the bill providing funds for that program was an omnibus-spending bill that Congress took up last spring. Maddow's point, nevertheless, remained the same.

"If you vote against the omnibus bill," she said at the end of the exchange, "if you complain about the omnibus bill, if you tout your vote against the omnibus bill, it is hypocrisy to then go to your district and go to a ribbon cutting ceremony for something that is funded by the omnibus bill that you voted against."

David Gregory sure raised his hand to silence her a couple of times so that he could maintain control. Interesting dynamic. He must lose sleep over her potential to replace him.

Ford does not sound AT ALL like a democrat in this show - he will "defend" wall street which means he will be in the pocket of wall street and he wants to reduce government. Pro-choice does not mean he is a democrat and he is even taken a more pro-life stance by being for parental notification which is not currently law. The last thing we need is another corporate shill.

I dont know if i want ford to run or not. I like gillibrand and i dont like ford but if gillibrand does not have the votes to win, I would obviously rather ford or another dem from NY than a republican. I guess if ford can beat gillibrand, he has a pretty good chance to win the election i would hope.

A congressman saying they will work with the president means NOTHING - they have to be willing to vote for the bipartisanship bill in the end and not just throw in as many amendments as they can and then, walk out of the room at the end chuckling when the bill fails.

American politics are so bloody base. It just shows us and the world that we have not yet obtained any social enlightenment . Nothing seems to be "about the peoples well being" but more about the individual politicians career move .....I am so sick and tired of the whole thing .. I want out ! We need a 3rd party more than ever. yet it will never happen. The republicans are self absorbed and cruel to anyone who is not backward thinking , and the democrats are sheep who cant get anything done.

We love you, Rachel. You alway do your home work and you say it like it is. How I wish Democrtas and the White House in particular would research and present facts the way you do! They have so much resoraces they can rely on to do this.

KMicheals - Your math is all wrong starting with the fact that not all of that money was spent on creating jobs, nor do you take into account how many jobs were saved which should count towards your cost/benefit analysis.

Rachel returned her tax cut the way private citizens are allowed to -- by voting against her financial interest and voting the Republicans out of the WH!

Schocked and awed is what I saw in the video...Great job, Rachel!

If all media would call them out when they are caught in lie/an crap like this, than they would have to be responsable for their actions once again. This is the way it use to be to! Thanks Rachel

Kept Man obviously loves the sight of his own written words. Uncle Rush and Aunt Glenn have taught him well. It is surprising considering the alarming illiteracy rate among his kind. Don't worry though, he'll be done soon. He's used up almost all of the talking points he knows at this point.

Madcow tells huffingglue posters to bark.
They bark.
So predictable.
So foolish.
So telling of koolaid drinkers.

Here is the truth of it ....

There have been no Republicans bragging about how the drunken sailor spending is great. You simply, as always, misrepresent the facts. The facts are that the drunken sailor (obama) stole 767 billion dollars of our tax money and decided to spread the wealth around. State representatives tried to get as much of their own state tax money back as they good, which is the natural outcome of tossing around the state taxpayer money in the first place. Your insane semantics game of calling this hypocrisy does not and will not stick, except in the minds of foolish koolaid drinkers that believe every insane idea passed their way. The so-called stimulus bill, if taken at the most rosy numbers, purchased 1.7 million jobs at the cost to taxpayers of 463,000 dollars per job. With each job averaging an annual salary of 45,000 dollars. The numbers do not justify the expense to the taxpayers and their children.
01:35 PM on 02/17/2010
Wow! You are barking the loudest.

Can you just send the link to Fox news where all your "statistics" come from? Then I think it's time for your Mommy to put her little girl to bed before her head gets too full of talking points. So run along now sugar. Lots of tea-partying for you in the morning.
06:12 PM on 02/18/2010
Do you actually have a job or is the rest of the working nation supporting your worthless lame existence. Your little girl and mommy stuff might require some professional help. Really kinda creepy.
01:18 PM on 02/17/2010
Now on the real results of the last Jobs bill, even if you take the most rosy of estimates (which is exactly what NYTimes did) you get 1.7 million jobs, at an average salary of $45,000 per year, costing the US taxpayer $463,000 dollars per job. You do the math ... 767 billion paid for 1.7 million jobs (impossible to count the true number) ends up costing your children $463,000 dollars per job. Any real economist will tell you that this is a completely foolish return on our tax dollar.

It does seem a littly high when the division is done that way, however think of the multiplier effect that occurs when million are spent in the economy and the effect that infrastructure repairs will have for the long run. Your math may be correct for a nearsighted viewpoint. Which of course is the way of the Republicans.

Contrary to the smooth liar on the show, the Obama debt is 31.5% compared to Bush debt rate of 6%. The liar not so cleverly whitewashed over the very significant fact.

Talk about drinking the Kool-aid -- about following the nutso Beck/Rush speak! You are SO blind. Not only are the facts about past Republicans FACTS (Reagan Bush1 Bush2) doubling and tripling and more the debt, throw in the Bush1 BAILOUT of Long Term Capital Management (a COMPLETELY NON-GOVERNMENT, VERY PRIVATE HEDGE FUND FOR THE SUPER RICH) which was, in my opinion, out-right THEFT from the American public, and unconstitutional; the invasion of Panama AFTER the local government there offered US Noriega and we turned them down; Bush2/Cheney undeclared war with Iraq based on faked intel (was Hussein bad and needed to go? Yes. But should have been done under Bush1 after Gulf War 1); Bush2/Cheney entering Afghanistan but then TWICE issuing orders to NOT capture Osama (I have talked to soldiers who were THERE and know the facts) so that they can keep the war going so their friends can make Billions; take all that and more and you come up with the complete hypocrisy of Republicans (and many Democrats).

You mean Madcow is copying word for word the Obama white house talking points. Gee, what a non-surprise.
