Frank Lautenberg Hospitalized
Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey was taken to the hospital after a fall.

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. — Long-serving U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg fell at his home Monday night and was taken by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution, an aide said.

The 86-year-old Democrat, the first New Jersey senator to be elected to five terms, was conscious when he was taken from his Cliffside Park home, spokesman Caley Gray said.

Lautenberg was doing well at the hospital but was to stay there overnight for routine observation, Gray said.

"The senator is in great spirits and joking with the doctors," said Gray, who didn't know if the senator had fallen inside or outside the apartment or whether he had suffered any injuries.

Lautenberg returned Friday from a trip to Haiti with a congressional delegation. He was scheduled to discuss the trip and the U.S. aid effort for the island nation, which is recovering from a devastating earthquake, at a news conference on Tuesday.

Lautenberg was first elected to the Senate in 1982. He retired in 2000 but was called back in 2002 as a late replacement for Sen. Robert Torricelli, who abandoned his re-election bid amid an ethics controversy five weeks before Election Day.

The Paterson-born Lautenberg first came to prominence as chairman of Automatic Data Processing, a payroll services company he founded with two friends in 1952.

A liberal, Lautenberg has been a staunch gun control advocate and critic of the tobacco industry. He wrote laws to ban smoking on domestic airline flights and to institute a national minimum drinking age of 21.

Recently, he has been back in the spotlight as a critic of the Transportation Security Administration after a January security breach at Newark Liberty International Airport. He also was active in the effort to end an international custody dispute involving the son of Tinton Falls, N.J., resident David Goldman.

New Jersey Governor Christie should be prepared to appoint a replacement for Lautenberg.

no disrespect to this guy whatsoever. But why do we have 85, 90, 100 year old men making laws for us? On both sides. Blows my mind.

Because there are no term limits and some old people don't want to go home to die. There is a guy on my job who is probably late 70's early 80's and he works half a day every day. He says keeping active keeps him going.

Can't blame them, since their constituents elected them. Regardless, there's only a minumum age for those who serve in the US Senate, no maximum age.

I know there are no limits. That's the problem. Watching the state of the union, you could just tell that so many of those people are so out of touch with reality as they have one foot in the grave. And yet, people keep electing these people.

There is an older guy in this office who does maintenance part time. I think he is 80. That is cool Being a senator or congress person is different. These people can find soemthing else to do then try to make laws for us.

Do you also read the obituaries in your area to see what property might be available for sale?

I met Lautenberg a couple of years ago, outside a Costco in Hackensack. He was gracious and very alert and sharp, despite his age. I wish him a speedy recovery. We need Progressive Democrats like Lautenberg, to represent those of us who are like-minded, in Congress.

Senator Lautenberg is one of the good guys and he did the party a favor when he came out of retirement and replaced the corrupt Torrecelli...but he should have retired when Corzine was still governor so the seat would stay safe...if he is forced to retire now (or worse) another seat goes Republican (not that it seems to matter much)....

This old fellow will not make it through his whole term which ends in 2014. Republican Governor Christie will have to appoint a replacement for Senator Lautenberg soon.
