Blizzard 2010: 'Snowpocalypse' Seen From Space (PICTURES)

First Posted: 04/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:30 PM ET

*See photos below*

New photos from NASA's Earth Observatory show an outer-space view of the massive snowfall that coated much of the East Coast earlier this month.

The blizzard--nicknamed the 'Snowpocalypse' and 'Snowmaggedon'--hit Washington, D.C. especially hard with several feet of snow that brought the area to a halt.

The Earth Observatory uses special satellite technology to take such images. They explain:

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image on February 7, 2010, showing part of the region affected by heavy snowfall. Snow blankets the area hundreds of kilometers inland from the Atlantic coastline. Along the latitude of New York City, however, snow cover thins considerably.

The first photo shows the blizzard as seen from further away. The second offers a closer view of the snow that hit Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City.

See how the most recent 'Snowpocalypse' compares to the fierce blizzard that hit the East Coast in late 2009.

World May Not Be Warming, Say Scientists
The Sunday Times February 14, 2010
"In its last assessment the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the evidence that the world was warming was “unequivocal”.
It warned that greenhouse gases had already heated the world by 0.7C and that there could be 5C-6C more warming by 2100, with devastating impacts on humanity and wildlife. However, new research, including work by British scientists, is casting doubt on such claims. Some even suggest the world may not be warming much at all. “The temperature records cannot be relied on as indicators of global change,” said John Christy, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a former lead author on the IPCC. "We concluded, with overwhelming statistical significance, that the IPCC’s climate data are contaminated with surface effects from industrialisation and data quality problems. These add up to a large warming bias.” Some are next to air- conditioning units or are on waste treatment plants. One of the most infamous shows a weather station next to a waste incinerator. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article7026317.ece

The Cupola Observatory on the International Space Station is now open!!

This new module features a dome-shaped array of seven windows looking down at the Earth and a control console the station's robotic arm.

Cupola is attached to the new Tranquility Node 3, which will be the dedicated crew quarters for the U.S. segment of the ISS, complete with environmental, hygiene, and exercise equipment, leaving the three labs -- Destiny (U.S.), Columbus (EU), and Kibo (Japan) -- dedicated to science equipment.

After 10 long years of assembly disrupted by a tragic Shuttle disaster, the ISS is now 98% complete, awaiting the Leonardo Pressurized Multipurpose Module (PMM) to complete the U.S. segment and the Rassvet Mini Research Module (MRM1) and Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM) to complete the Russian segment.

The ISS now masses 385 tons and will approach a final mass about 400 tons.

What a year though, tornadoes in Southern California and heavy snow in DC and in the South, talk about messed up weather patterns.

Climategate U-Turn As Scientist At Centre Of Row Admits: There Has Been No Global Warming Since 1995 ~By JONATHAN PETRE 14th February 2010
"Data for vital 'hockey stick graph' has gone missing. There has been no global warming since 1995. Warming periods have happened before - but NOT due to man-made changes. Professor Phil Jones admitted his record keeping is 'not as good as it should be'. The academic at the centre of the ‘Climategate’ affair, whose raw data is crucial to the theory of climate change, has admitted that he has trouble ‘keeping track’ of the information. Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers. The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory. Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon. And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1250872/Climategate-U-turn-Astonishment-scientist-centre-global-warming-email-row-admits-data-organised.html

He didnt say that. Read the original BBC interview.

This is no different from the creationists braniacs trying to misquote Stephen J Gould and pretend he said evolution isnt possible. No different at all.

I have no idea what you just said, or why.
01:38 AM on 02/17/2010
Um.... Because of... weather? Fumes, very intuitive of you to put those clues together that freezing water has something to do with temperature varience. It's called seasonality. As the northern hemisphere is angled away from the sun it gets a little chilly up here. Now that we understand that we should look into climate. We can actually see graphically hot years in cooler trends and cold years in warmer trends. They appear as spikes on a polygon graph and may have nothing to do with the overall trend. But I'm sure you knew all that stuff.

I will never figure out how people can't understand the difference between weather and climate. Weather is an isolated phenomenon, climate is determined by empirical measurement over long periods of time. The last decade was the warmest in 2000 years. 2009 was the 2nd warmest on record. This results in more ocean evaporation, resulting in more precipitation and energy in the atmosphere, resulting in more snow/rain and weather volatility. All you have to do is look at the Tibet Plateau for proof. The entire monsoon season in India and southeastern Asia is caused by the Tibetan Plateau heating up like a frying pan and creating pressure systems that result in monsoon season. Year after year. Yes, heat results in wet. GASP! But since it's warm, it just rains. If it was here and winter, it would snow. If people could just view things from the standpoint of physics, seeing everything as either a manifestation or reaction of energy, then it would be so simple. It's all in flux, constantly trying to achieve equilibrium.

And how does FOX News manage to convince people that a snowstorm in the middle of winter is out of the ordinary? Maybe if this storm happened in July, then they'd have a point. Because we've never seen winter snowstorms before...good grief. Besides, climate changed caused by global warming will result in the icecaps melting, diluting the oceans and resulting in the disruption of the Gulf Stream, putting North America and Europe into ice ages.

Most of them do understand the difference, they just ignore it in order to advance their point.

To all those who are bashing Global Climate change:

One event doesn't change the Statistical analysis performed against climate data gathered since 1880 when climate data started being collected internationally. There's alot more to climate then meets Joe Six Pack's eyes!

Every biological object on earth is connected in some way to another. It's called the Food Chain.

Think of our earth's ecosystems as one big Dominos game. You knock one down EVERYTHING GOES DOWN!

Because of the magnitude of our earth.... Climate change is a dominos game in slow motion!
The game might not be over in your life time... It's your kids, grandkids and great grand kids you may want to start worrying about.

I find it ironic that the same people who worry about leaving federal deficits to their children/grandchildren are the same one's to who don't mind leaving an earth in peril to them!

Great analogy and an excellent point to cap it off.

All of you, man made global warming believers, should, perhaps, read what Phil Jones told the BBC during the weekend. The theory is being discredited and falling apart by the minute.

You're confused. AGW theory asserts man made "green house gases", like C02 and methane, are increasing average global temperatures. It doesn't have a thing to do with ozone depletion via man made chlorofluorocarbon emissions. That's a different discussion entirely.
05:14 PM on 02/16/2010
And your opinion about mmgw is based on the "scientific" findings of people like Phil Jones? No wonder....

''Ice dawn Crystallized,
Drifting Snow I'm hypnotized,
Restless lights, shadows hide,
Climate changed worldwide,

All the signs, we're so blind,
It's like a thorn left in my mind,
Sleeping visions come to life,
Let our future survive..

Icewind will blind my eyes forever
Look ! Look !, the Icewind will blow,
Ice Wind, so cold this world will never understand,
The Nature strikes back without grace''...

When someone allows you to stay in their home, that doesn't mean you can trash and pollute it, that means you treat it like its your own....

Its seems we have overstayed our welcome and the Earth has had enough....

Yeah, most of us are just the trashy neighbors who keep junk on the lawn, pour used oil into the sewer after our DIY oil change, chain our barking dog out front, and leave our home-improvement projects unfinished as eyesores. ;-)
