Toyota Corolla Recall 2010? World's Best-Selling Car May Be Next

KEN THOMAS and ELAINE KURTENBACH   02/17/10 11:57 PM ET   AP

Toyota Recall Brakes Akio Toyoda
Akio Toyoda at a recall press conference earlier this month. The Toyota Corolla may also be facing a recall, while the company pledges more safety features including a brake override.

WASHINGTON — First it was gas pedals, then brakes. Now Toyota and the government are looking into complaints that the popular Corolla is difficult to steer straight, raising a new safety concern ahead of next week's congressional hearing about the automakers recalls.

But how worried should drivers be? Or is this an example of how any problem at the Japanese company now gets intense scrutiny?

The executive in charge of quality control said the company is reviewing fewer than 100 complaints about power steering in the Corolla. Toyota sold nearly 1.3 million Corollas worldwide last year, including nearly 300,000 in the United States, where it trailed only Camry as Toyota's most popular model.

The executive, Shinichi Sasaki, said drivers may feel as though they are losing control over the steering, but it was unclear why. He mentioned problems with the braking system or tires as possible underlying causes. U.S. officials are also investigating.

He stressed that the company was prepared to fix any defects it finds and that executives were considering a recall as an option, although no decision had been made.

In Japan, President Akio Toyoda said he did not intend to appear at congressional hearings next week in Washington, preferring to leave that to his U.S.-based executives while he focuses on improving quality controls. Toyoda, grandson of the company's founder, said he would consider attending if invited.

Also Wednesday, a Transportation Department official said the agency planned to open an investigation into the reports about the Corolla.

The preliminary investigation is expected to begin Thursday and involve an estimated 500,000 vehicles. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the department had not yet notified Toyota of the probe.

In an attempt to reassure car owners, Toyota Motor Corp. said it would install a backup safety system in all future models worldwide that will override the accelerator if the gas and brake pedals are pressed at the same time. Acceleration problems are behind the bulk of the 8.5 million vehicles recalled by the automaker since November.

The company said it was placing ads in U.S. newspapers Thursday, featuring an open letter from Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales USA, seeking to answer concerns over quality issues.

"History shows that great companies learn from their mistakes. That's why all 172,000 people working for Toyota and our dealers are doing more than ever to make things right for our customers today and for the future," it says.

The emergence of potential steering problems with Corolla presented another roadblock in the automaker's efforts to repair its image of building safe, reliable vehicles. Dealers across the U.S. are fixing accelerators that can stick, floor mats that can trap gas pedals and questionable brakes on new Prius hybrids.

Auto industry experts said any power steering troubles on the Corolla were less worrisome than accelerator pedals or brakes because drivers could still steer the vehicle, even though doing so may be more difficult.

The government investigation comes even though the automaker said it has received relatively few complaints about the popular compact.

Even so, in the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received a growing number of complaints from drivers about power steering on 2009 and 2010 Corollas. The numbers are small compared to Toyota's overall sales – only about 150 reports for those two models. By comparison, there are more than 1,000 complaints about problems with 2010 Prius brakes, a vehicle Toyota has already recalled.

But the decision to investigate the Corolla offered further evidence that the automaker is exposed to heightened scrutiny of its cars and trucks.

Some Corolla drivers said they had difficulty keeping the vehicle straight, especially at higher speeds. They reported having to fight the wheel to keep the car from wandering between lanes.

Jerry Josefy, a 71-year-old retired farmer and mechanic from Grandfield, Okla., said he noticed problems with the steering on his 2009 Corolla when he drove it home after buying it last year.

He took it back to the dealer for repairs, but the steering trouble persisted. Josefy still drives the car, but said it requires constant attention to make sure it stays straight.

"It wants to wander all the time," he said. "You could have a wreck with it if you don't keep your eyes on the road."

Smaller, less-expensive vehicles such as the 2009 and 2010 Corolla use electric-assist power steering. They are usually equipped with power steering systems that are aided by a small electric motor, a system known as electric-assist steering.

The motor essentially helps align the steering wheel with the movement of the tires. The system is cheaper to install than steering systems that rely on hydraulics.

Problems can arise if the motor is out of sync with the steering wheel, which could potentially cause the vehicle to wander without any turning of the wheel, he said.

"Car companies work on it a lot," said Jim De Clerck, a professor in the Michigan Technological University's mechanical engineering department and a former General Motors engineer. "It is a pretty well-known customer-satisfaction issue."

Toyota said the steering problem could be related to the braking system or tires. Improperly aligned tires, for example, can be a source of steering complications, De Clerck said.

In Washington, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee asked several auto insurance companies for information on whether they reported incidents of sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles to the NHTSA.

Meanwhile, the House Energy and Commerce Committee moved its scheduled hearing up to Feb. 23, one day ahead of the Oversight Committee meeting. Toyota's Lentz and the head of the NHTSA, David Strickland, been invited to testify before the energy committee. A Senate hearing is planned for March 2.

Toyota is expected to send North America chief executive Yoshi Inaba to the hearings. Toyoda does plan a U.S. visit, mainly to speak with American workers and dealers, but he said details of his trip are not yet final.

The executives will face scrutiny in the U.S., where the Transportation Department has demanded documents related to its recalls. The department wants to know how long the automaker knew of safety defects before taking action.

Reports of deaths in the U.S. connected to sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles have surged in recent weeks, with the alleged death toll reaching 34 since 2000, according to new consumer data gathered by the U.S. government.

Thus spake someone that fancies himself: "Forreal567" : "You are so right. i better take my two Toyota vehicles and trade them in..."

Well you should though I'm hearing that more and more retailers are refusing Toyotas in-trade.
If you weren't aware, Toyota's recalled everything which they have in-the-field dating back to the Invention of the Wheel.

Best wishes to you: "Forreal567".

Actually, most of the GM dealers are offering an extra grand for those bringing in and trading in Toyotas and buying one of their cars. (I guess they have to rely on recalls to get new customers) So, you are wrong.

Actually many owners are leaving dealers in-disgust when they are extremely low-b@lled on the (way below KBB) relative value of a questionably functional Toyota motor vehicle is presented.

Toyota owners are also despondent given that many are upside-down in terms of value-to-loan balance.

Best wishes.

The Shame.

"Toyota starts recall of another Lexus model dragged into safety scandal"

"As bad as the safety scandal engulfing Toyota has become, its Lexuis luxury division has gotten off pretty lightly. But that's beginning to change.

The accident that sparked the wave of scrutiny of the Japanese automaker involved a Lexus, the ES350. It was the loaner car from a dealer that killed a California highway patrolman and his family last August. Toyota believes the accident was caused by floor mats jamming under the pedals -- and it was one of several Toyota models in the first recall to modify the pedals. Now another Lexus model is getting swept up:"

Modern autos are very complicated systems. I own a 2006 Honda. They too have a recall. Well lets fix the probem, before anyone gets hurt. What I,m reading is Toyota has had this problem for nearly a decade. With compicity of NTSA, Toyota refused to admit there was a problem. No one persued this issue, now, 19 folks are dead. It seems to me Toyota Gamed the system, and now is feeling the consecquences. My advice buy a Chevy, Ford, Honda, Fiat???, VW, anything except a Toyota.

I still believe in Toyota. When I was in school, I bought a 7 year old used Toyota Corolla for $4,000 cash. I had that car for almost 13 years and put almost 300,000 miles on it. If I had actually performed routine car maintainence should as oil changes and transmission fluid changes, it would have gone 400,000 miles or more. I literally just put gas in it and it just ran. Best money I ever spent.

I do suspect that other auto manufactuers have similar problems but just refuse to actually have the ethical mindset to put out a recall and address the problems.

what does this have anything to do with anything?

was your Toyota a pre-2001 model? then it wouldn't have any of these issues. do you think there is anyone else out there who could tell a similar story about a Cavalier, Escort, or Reliant? of of course there are.

"ethical mindset"? do you even know what you are saying?

does an "ethical mindset" basically buy off two NHTSA employees to skew recall problems in their company favor? does an ethical company then hire the two NHTSA employees as Washington lobbyists as reward for their malfeasance and deceit that killed or injured tens of thousands of Toyota owners and passengers?

Toyota wanted to continue to sell defective new vehicles even after they knew their was a serious issue with them. only government intervention put a stop to that; it wasn't Toyota.

even now, they shove a bogus "fix" (accelerator pedal shim) on their customers.

where is that "ethical mindset"?

While Toyota recieves press, attention, and swift legal action for unintended design flaws, absolutely no attention has been paid to the X,000's of deaths each year caused by INTENTION Automotive Design, and Components!

"UNLAWFUL USE" of a Motor Vehicle:

If your a Law abiding citizen, demanding Legislators mandate automotive manufactures Limit Top Speed to = 80 m.p.h., and have a precise formula to follow regarding: Horse Power to Weight ratio, at the Point of manufacture, will benefit You GREATLY!

The only purpose excessively high speed capability of a vehicle allows is the ability for the Driver to exceed legal Speed Limits, and Break the Law; SPEED. Under the present design constraints, auto manufactures are: Aiding & Abetting Criminals to drive Dangerously, and UnLawfully.

100% of the capability in the Design and Components built into a Vehicle intended to thrust it above the Legal Highway Speed Limit is for: UNLAWFUL USE.

100%!

Losing that capability, which should be considered a Design Flaw, designated a: "HAZARDOUS PRODUCT'; Will have no effect, nor limit the intended LAWFUL use of the vehicle.

None!

Under the present status quo, every time You get into Your vehicle to set out on a journey, You are facing unwarranted danger. It's an OUTRAGE. 1 that may have not crossed your mind, but now that I've made You aware of these extraordinary, unjustified circumstances, and the irrational continued manufacture of these machines.

this problem mainly affects scion & yaris models with the 1.5cc engin. it may be as simple as tweeking the cpu. right now they don't know. has anyone else experienced simular problems?

A recall based on fewer than 100 complaints? If that were Ford or GM, they would wait until they had thousands of complaints and fatalities before doing anything. At least Toyota takes safety more seriously.

are you actually serious?

let's look at some basic facts here:

-Toyota has had this problem since 2002.

-2 guys at NHSTA went to Toyota USA in 2003 to discuss this.

-they went back to NHSTA, and completely changed the parameters of the investigation, severly narrowing them to include ONLY incidents of unintended acceleration of ONE SECOND OR LESS!
even with these severaly narrowed parameters, over 2,000 accidents and 19 deaths were recorded.

you are using Toyota's narrow parameters to try to prove a bogus Toyota point. how many insurance companies do you suppose are poring over hundreds of thousands of loss claims involving Toyota vehicles as we speak? how many insureds reported unintended acceleration as the cause of the accident (if they lived thru it), and were not believed by either the police or the insurance adjuster?

do yourself a favor, and Google "Chris Santucci-Toyota" and read the ABC News story about his involvement in the coverup.

by the way, Santucci and his cohort are now lobbyists for Toyota in Washington.

a few interesting observations:

-Toyota is going to add a "brake override" to their ECU. how nice of them! they are the only company in the world to NOT offer this software in their ECU. every other auto company in the world has offered this ever since "drive by wire" was introduced back in the early 2000s.

-it's interesting to see much of the feedback from Toyota owners who have had the accelerator pedal "fix" installed. the vast majority say the accelerator pedal is now "hair trigger", and smooth starts are impossible. anyone with a junior high school level understanding of science would know that when the travel of a lever is decreased, the result of pushing on the same pedal will now be much different.

-Toyota will still not include any Lexus models in the recall (except the slow selling 250h for Prius-like brake issues), even though hundreds of accidents and numerous deaths have been reported, including the deaths of a CHP officer in California (a certified CHP high speed pursuit driving trainer) and his family. police at the scene reported the brakes were literally on fire when they arrived.

if they did, their whole house of cars would collapse.

they have been blaming this entire accelerator issue on a US made product that was made to Toyota specifications. the Lexus does not use this part. but they have no problem having other people die because they won't come clean on the REAL issue, the ECU.
11:56 AM on 02/17/2010
and the 3rd party company Exponent that did an independent study of the ECUs and could not recreate any unwanted acceleration, that was just bullshit, a conspiracy or what?

FWIW, I have a 2008 Lexus ES350 that I took into the dealer for recall work yesterday. The shim issue didn't involve Lexus, as you say the part used in Lexus is the one made in Japan, not in the US. But the "floormat" recall from late last year does include some Lexus models, including my ES350.

In addition to modifying the accelerator pedal and swapping the all weather front floor mats, and doing something to the floor on the driver's side, the recall for the Lexus ES350 includes an ECU update which installs a brake override.

Just to clarify.
