William Delahunt, US Congressman, Claims Israel Snubbed Him

ARON HELLER   02/17/10 02:09 PM ET   AP

William Delahunt

TEL AVIV, Israel — A visiting U.S. congressman lashed out at Israel's number two diplomat Wednesday, saying he was snubbed by the Foreign Ministry and demanding an official clarification.

Rep. William Delahunt, a Democrat from Massachusetts and a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, is heading a congressional delegation to the region. The trip is hosted by J Street, a liberal Jewish lobbying group that presents itself as an alternative to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee – one of Washington's most powerful lobbies.

J Street, which supports President Barack Obama's push for a Palestinian state alongside Israel, says it sought a meeting for the U.S. representatives with Israeli diplomats but was turned down.

The Foreign Ministry dismissed the complaint, saying in response that it did not need mediators to set up meetings with U.S. officials.

The snub appeared aimed at J Street. Israel's government has been critical of the group's programs, which are more dovish than those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hawkish government.

Speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv, Delahunt said he was surprised and disappointed to read an Israeli newspaper report that he was being boycotted by the Foreign Ministry for his affiliation with J Street and identified Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon as the culprit.

"We were puzzled that the Deputy Foreign Minister has apparently attempted to block our meetings with senior officials in the Prime Minister's office and Foreign Ministry – questioning either our own support of Israel or that we would even consider traveling to the region with groups that the deputy foreign minister has so inaccurately described as 'anti-Israel'," Delahunt said.

"In our opinion this is an inappropriate way to treat elected representatives of Israel's closest ally who are visiting the country."

Delahunt asked the Israeli government "for a clarification of its stance toward this and future delegations."

Ayalon's office said the deputy minister was prepared to meet any elected officials, especially from the U.S. Congress, but he "didn't need mediators."

Ayalon is a member of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's hardline Yisrael Beiteinu party, which is a senior partner in Netanyahu's hawkish coalition government.

Ayalon, who is also a former ambassador to the U.S., has questioned J Street's commitment to Israel, criticizing the group earlier this week for describing itself as both pro-Israel and pro-peace.

"The thing that troubles me is that they don't present themselves as to what they really are," he said. "They should not call themselves pro-Israeli."

That categorization upset Delahunt, who called J Street a pro-Israel voice with support in the American Jewish community. He said it was "unwise" to misrepresent legitimate disagreements as questioning support for Israel.

Four other U.S. representatives were traveling with Delahunt – Democrats Donald Payne of New Jersey, Lois Capps of California, Bob Filner of California and Mary Jo Kilroy of Ohio.

Last month Ayalon sparked a crisis when he humiliated the Turkish ambassador to Israel by forcing him to sit on a lower seat, keeping a Turkish flag out of their meeting and not shaking his hand. The crisis with Turkey was resolved only after Israel officially apologized.

Delahunt added that as chairman of the House subcommittee on Europe, he was "not unaware of the deputy foreign minister's behavior."

Here in lies the problem with foreign lobbying in DC. Our government officials are treated like employees of another country. Really is that what we want? This lies squarely on the feet of the US. We can not go to another country as a fragmented gov't. It sends the message that you can deal with only the elected officials you want.
Like it or not there is one president of our country at a time. He or she should be shown the respect the office deserves. Isreal does not have to answer to our country for how it conducts its business by we do not have to maintain a constant unwavering support behind her either.

We need to have a clear vision with one voice on policies and allow both our friends and enemies to determine their own response to it- with out lobbiest pushing agendas in DC.

Fix things in DC and the rest will fall in place

Thank you J Street, Congressmen Delehunt, Capps, Filner and Congresswoman Kilroy for going to Israel, attempting to visit Gaza and daring to speak out about this outrageous morass against humanity. So many of our so-called leaders have lost their ability to think critically and compassionately. And thank you, Aron Heller for writing this post.

Danny Ayalon was certainly morally and tactically correct in refusing to lend credibility to J Street and CMEP by meeting with their delegation. Taqiyya, Ben Ami style, is rapidly going out of style.

Any time I see the words "Israel" and "closest ally" or "only ally in the Middle East" in the same sentence, it makes me uncomfortable.

"Ally" implies a common enemy, and in that sense it was common to call Israel our "only ally" during the cold war, against a threat from communism. Justified or not, that angle is history.

Imagine calling Colombia our "only ally in S. America", or India our "only ally" in Asia. Can you imagine how the other countries in the area would feel about it?

Kudos to J Street for attempting to make our foreign policy more even-handed.

"Only" ally is inaccurate. The US has close ties to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan (and Turkey, if you count that as the Middle East). However, "closest ally" is certainly a fair description of Israel. Israel's enemies are our own enemies, and Israel's cultural ethos is similar to our own (if a bit less shrouded in layers of political correctness or pleasantries).

J Street is a bunch of fruitcakes who think that capitulating everything is the way to peace. Capitulating absolutely is the way to loss, not to a mutually agreed-upon peace.

Inoku,
Virtually all your posts on HuffPo are about Israel. Mine are not.
You seem to be on a mission to "set facts straight". I am not.

All I'm saying is that we have to stop the "You're my best friend" business in a global society. Compromising does not mean capitulating.
Israel's mores are not more similar to our own than any other mores.
Remember "E pluribus unum".

When are American Congressfolk going to learn who calls the shots on American foreign policy in the Middle East?
We do what Israel tells us to do, period.
If we don't, they might start repaying all the hundreds of billions they've received from American taxpayers to build nuclear weapons and wipe the Palestinians from the face of the earth.
Sheesh, you'd think a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee would know this stuff by now.

In Jerusalem, they sell t-shirts all over saying, "Don't Worry America, Israel is Behind You" with pics of F17s that we gave them. Can you imagine? Even my Israeli friend said "Don't worry tablespoon, teaspoon is behind you."

It's great when this happens, really. We can see that the "special relationship" is one-sided.

Good thing Israel isn't doing that.
06:10 AM on 02/18/2010
But it's ok for Ayalon to be rude and ignorant.
Yeah - some host.
02:43 AM on 02/18/2010
Next time Israeli funding comes up put a hold on it , Then Ayalon will crawl on his hands and knees to your office congressman, (at which point you can double snub him back ) I am starting to like the new Israeli ministers , at this rate , the american taxpayer will be able to wean israel off of their welfare checks in a few years
02:47 AM on 02/18/2010
You just want to see Jews on their hands and knees, and that is overwhelmingly apparent. Keep hoping! Preferably, hold your breath!

Now that's just foolish. Comments like that turn people off--is that what you're going for?

Projection.....deflection.

The comments made have nothing to do with this report.

As for the report. In all honesty, it would be foolish to expect a meeting with Ayalon if one is sent by JStreet. Dalahunt must know this. So maybe it is a staged "scandal?"

Forget weaning, CUT THEM OFF! They're fully able to support their own country financially, and we need those billions at home.

He should take bowing lesson from our President! He's a master of that!

Really? You can't understand simple ettiquette. My question is did you have the same issues when both McCain and President Obama HAD to go to Isreal as candidates for the US presidency?

I can't understand how someone has an issue with how high or low someone bows during a greeting to the Japanese leader yet not one comment on why our presidential candidates have to go to a foreign land to secure their approval for president of this country.

More than 100,000 people participated in a demonstration in Paris while in London, 200,000 demonstrators condemned Israel's crimes. The demonstrators denounced the fact that many European leaders were ignoring brutality that was being carried out against 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has imposed a siege in order to deny Gazans food and medical care. This blockade has been compared by many, including Richard Falk, the UN Rapporteur of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, to that suffered in the Warsaw Ghettos.

Some European officials have started to react to this popular clamor and on December 11, the European Parliament decided to postpone the vote on a new trade agreement. The Parliament's Vice President, Luis Morgantini, said that the Parliament would not pass the new agreement until Israel respects international law and human rights.

Morganitni said that the decision of the Parliament intended "to send a clear message to the Israeli government that their brutal policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are not going unnoticed and that the cries of the Palestinians, humanitarian workers and political activists are not falling on deaf ears." She added that the vote was also a signal to the EU Council and Commission, which were probably embarrassed by the Parliament's vote that they had to put pressure on Israel to stop its colonization of the 1967 occupied Palestinian territories.

Israel is very dependent on trade with Europe. If the momentum keeps building in Europe Israel can be sent a message to its' pocket book. I believe that an effective economic boycott of Israeli products in Europe is the most powerful possible tool for ending Israel's crimes and forcing Israel into negotiating a just peace with the Palestinians.

"Keeps building?" How about "starts building?" The BDS hasn't picked up even one country to boycott Israel in its 10 years of existence. How much longer are you going to try the same old tactic even when it's clear it isn't going to work?

Glad Rep. Delahunt is standing up for justice, unlike his younger 30 somethings in Congress that he used to play tag-team with on C-Span.

I used to enjoy those programs and supported each and every one of them until the 30 somethings showed what hypocrites they were by voting to sanction Palestinians and the West Bank for some rocket attacks but stayed mum on Israel's 20 day bombardment with white phosphorous.

NEVER AGAIN !
01:04 AM on 02/18/2010
"Some rocket attacks?"

Okay, let me shoot 14,000 rockets at your home. Sure, they're kinda inaccurate, but still deadly enough that you have to run to the bomb shelter every single time one comes. But it's only some rockets, so you shouldn't have a problem with it, right? I mean, if I'm shooting them at you, you must have deserved them.

The mental gymnastics of those who hate Israel never fails to amaze me.
01:25 AM on 02/18/2010
I think you might as well go with 20,000 now.

after driving several milion muslims out of their homes , and walling them into a ghetto what do you expect ? did no one fight back in the warsaw ghetto ? why the suprise when Gaza fights back

If he was standing for justice, perhaps he'd be standing up against a 10 year war in Iraq instead.
