Ann Coulter Revises Her John-Edwards-Is-Gay Routine

Coulter

Three years ago conservative firebrand Ann Coulter riled up the Conservative Political Action Conference when she called then Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards a "faggot."

With Edwards's much publicized dalliance with his campaign filmmaker -- an episode that led to marital discord, a love child and a train-wreck-style flame out -- it seemed the gay-baiting was no longer applicable. But on Saturday, it was clear Coulter hadn't moved on.

At her CPAC speech this year she, once again, took direct aim at Edwards.

She called the former North Carolina senator, "America's baby daddy," a "blow-dried evangelical who doesn't believe in God," and "the only candidate for vice president on a major party ticket with his own sex tape... which, starting next week, will be available in the [Bill] Clinton library gift shop."

Bad-dum, ching!

If the lines lacked their usual thump, it wasn't because Coulter had been forced to adjust her Edwards-is-gay-routine. It's because her shtick -- far more comedy than commentary -- has grown a bit tired. She's still a popular draw with the conservative crowds -- perhaps the most popular at this week's affair. And the media loves the bombast, with a fleet of camera crews showing up on a Saturday morning to tape a 12-minute speech.

But Coulter-the-provocateur has lost a certain touch. She's been peddling divisiveness for so long -- and so many others have followed her lead -- that the act has been largely stripped of its newsworthiness. On Saturday, she touched briefly on policy. But mostly, she came off as a humorist gunning for applause and a spotlight. The targets and lines were unoriginal.

On recently passed Sen. Ted Kennedy: "The fact that a Republican is in [his seat] must have him rolling in his grave probably spilling his drink."

On Bill Clinton's recent heart attack scare: "When the doctors asked him what his symptoms were he said it felt like two interns were sitting on his chest. He is fine now he just had to have a stem surgically inserted into his boxers."

On House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: "the botox is seeping into her brain now."

On MSNBC's Keith Olbermann: "[He's] a girl."

On town hall protesters: "CNN calls them teabaggers, which is the gayest thing I've ever heard on CNN other than Anderson Cooper."

On the president: "Since Obama was elected, ironically, for the first time in my life I'm sometimes not proud of my country."

The CPAC crowd was in stitches. But for those who have sat through Coulter's speeches before, the routine was old and predictable. The political discourse over the past year has made everyone calloused. The vitriol just doesn't seem vitriolic anymore.

She creates drama. Period. She offers no solutions. She has no ideas. She has no insights. She simply creates drama by parroting divisive concepts put forth by Conservative hate-mongers. She is not a journalist, nor an analyst; she is an actress.

"bottom line... publicity and money that is what it's all about."

It must be very restorative to believe that.

... "far more comedy than commentary," noting the lack of anything remotely funny about this "humor," describes her commentary perfectly.

I like the decision Cenk made on The Young Turks, they just don't cover anything about her. When you do, you give her attention and that is all she wants. So when you write about her, you have played into her hand. Discipline.

I've ALWAYS considered Ann a comedian: She doesn't believe HALF of her "political positions," it's just shtick. She knows that being outrageous attracts attention, gets her on TV, and makes her very, very wealthy!

Maybe, finally, possibly people like Coulter are now seen for what they really are. Which of course is a diversion. In the past Coulter, limbaugh and types like Beck all were welcome since they acted like smoke and mirrors in a magical show which took America's eye off the ball and let this country falter. Now there is no denying our country is in the crapper and we as a whole finally want answers instead of comic relief. Ann Coulter and her ilk dumbed this country down and are a big part of why our congress is incapable of doing anything other than doing nothing. Its easy to make fun of Clinton, edwards, kennedy or Al gore and the laughs most certainly clouded the eyes of many which allowed us to get into this untenable position in the first place. Coulter and her ignorant comments over the last eight to ten years have finally come home to roost unfortunately for those who enjoyed her shtick for so long they are the ones suffering the most as she and her fat cat rich friends continue to laugh all the way to the bank that all of us bailed out.

"mirrors in a magical show which took America's eye off the ball and let this country falter.

That would be the US Congress, the FTC, SEC, and the Attorney Generals, who took their eye off the ball (Bernie Madoff, Enron, S&L, etc.).

Americans have been going about their own business, working, paying taxes and mostly raising families while expecting their "representatives" to keep their eye on the ball. But it appears they have been only keeping their eyes glued to their own wealth creation.

It's time to move the ball to the right.

"Ann Coulter and her ilk dumbed this country down and are a big part of why our congress is incapable of doing anything other than doing nothing."

I'd like to know how that works.

If the truth were repeatable without being shunned, you'll find the "dumbing down" problem to be the fault of the NEC and their willing tax and spenders in government.

"she and her fat cat rich friends continue to laugh all the way to the bank that all of us bailed out."

Recall that your buddy, Barry voted for the bailouts. The US Congress refused to reign in Fannie and Freddie, and created those rules that actually caused the financial meltdown and subsequent job losses.

Their plan to fix it? Keep their big dollar supporters (Wall Street CEOs) and government employees in their jobs. Barry voted for that as well.

Pleas sir, tell me what YOU would have done to prevent 9/11 had you been the president?

Well, he could have started by reading the intelligence report he was given that said that Bin Laden was determined to attack the US. Oh, and maybe paying attention to the one that suggested the use of airliners to fly into buildings might have helped a tad as well.

NOTHING about Ann Coulter is funny. She is a divisive force in our society and she won't debate ideas as some posters have suggested she should. In an interview, Coulter's tyle is to talk right over the interviewer to get her opinions out. In that respect she is an excellent representative of the previous administration, which presented the Neocon way as the only "way". Any dissenters were not "real Amerikuns." Go away, Ann. You are obsolete.
