Mother Nature Network:

There are very few situations where female royalty is encouraged to have multiple sexual partners. Okay, that probably never happens. But in the case of honeybees, it's key to their survival. At least that's what some researchers hope to prove.

Readers might also want to investigate Varroa destructor, a tiny hitch-hiking mite that could well be the primary cause of honeybee colony decline. Australia's Dr. Denis Anderson's work is explored in the new film, "Honeybee Blues." He has tracked the rapid spread of this mite among bee colonies world-wide where it decimates the honeybee population by spreading itself and carrying viruses. Australia is the last place without the invasive destructor mite, though its arrival there is probably inevitable unless a remedy is discovered soon. California's Central Valley agriculture depends on healthy honeybees - now imported from Australia. They are sent on suicide missions to pollinate the almond fields and other crops. This is serious stuff.
