HARRISON, N.Y. — A student found slain on a college campus in suburban New York was strangled by her mother, who then tried to kill herself, police said Wednesday.

Stacey Pagli, 37, was arrested at White Plains Hospital Center on Wednesday morning and charged with murder in the death of her 18-year-old daughter, Marissa Pagli, a freshman at Manhattanville College in Purchase, said Harrison police Capt. Anthony Marraccini.

He said the mother left a note at the scene, but he declined to describe the contents. He also said that Pagli has spoken to investigators, but he would not say whether she confessed.

Later Wednesday, a frail-looking Pagli shuffled into Town Court for her arraignment, with her hands cuffed to a belt around her waist, her ankles shackled together and her hair covering her face.

Westchester County prosecutor Tim Ward asked Justice Marc Lust to order a suicide watch for Pagli because "she definitely has attempted to kill herself." Lust agreed and sent her to the county jail without bail.

Pagli's attorney, Lynette Spaulding, did not enter a plea.

Marissa Pagli's body was found by her father, a maintenance supervisor at the college, in the family's apartment in staff housing on Monday. Stacey Pagli was found unconscious at the scene and was hospitalized. Police would not comment on her injuries, but at her arraignment she was wearing a bandage on her left wrist.

Marissa Pagli had grown up on campus and enrolled last year at the school, about 27 miles northeast of Manhattan.

"We did recover a good amount of physical evidence," Marraccini said, but he declined to describe it. Police were awaiting further tests from the medical examiner and the county laboratory, he said.

The strangulation occurred in the victim's bedroom, and investigators believe Marissa was awake at the time of the attack, said Marraccini. There were signs of a struggle but he would not elaborate.

The strangulation was by hand, but "there could have been another device in addition to that," said Marraccini. There was nothing to indicate what might have prompted the attack.

Neighbors who were home at the time did not report any commotion, he said.

The killing was "emotionally devastating" for the father, John Pagli, the captain said.

Marraccini said police have never been called to the residence before. He said Stacey Pagli had no history of mental illness.

The college is a liberal arts school of about 3,000 students. Full-time, full-price undergraduate students pay about $45,000 a year for tuition and room and board.

Several women from the Kennedy family attended Manhattanville, including Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, the mother of President John F. Kennedy, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, his sister and founder of the Special Olympics. The college was a women's school until 1969 and Catholic until 1971.

A tribute page to Marissa Pagli was posted on Facebook. Her funeral was scheduled for Friday.

I think quite often in an parent/child or husband/wife relationship, where power is important to the abuser's sense of self, the abuser cannot tolerate any "back-talk", or verbal resistance to their point of view. Strangling may be the result of the abuser "shutting" that person up. Love and hate reversed in the heat of passion. Heartfelt sympathy to friends and family.

How horrible. My daughter is a freshman in college, and I worry about all sorts of things that could happen.... but this is just so sad and pointless.

The police said this type of murder almost never happens.

My deepest condolences and sympathy go out to the father/husband in this case. Not only has he lost his daughter, his wife went off the deep end and will probably go to jail for a while. How incredibly sad. Sometimes you look at your life and wish you had a job, were thinner, had more money, had a bigger home, a nicer car, whatever - and then you read something like this and you suddenly realize that your own life is just wonderful, whatever the problems and issues you have are.

Sometimes as a child we do not understand that not everyone lives like we do. My Mom grew up poor on a farm from a family of 13. I remember as a child the only time anyone got hit at our home was when my Dad hit my brother on his head. My Mom was furious. She said we do not hit our kids. They were not perfect but there was lots of love and somehow they understood that hitting your children wrong. My Mom reported the lady down the street for abusing two children that were living with her at a time when nobody did that. My Mom died 4 months ago at the age of 97 and I will miss her everyday of my life. I guess this is my way of saying thanks and a tribute to her.

More likely a religious fanatic. Reference the movie, "Carrie". Perhaps the police are not releasing the note because it is religious jibberish.

What do you want to bet the mother has a "religious motivation" in her head?

"Single Payer" arguments are heating up.
(Or was it about the "platinum" men's figure skating medal at the Olympiks?)
Makes me wanna go to McDonalds and get a Filet-o-Sea Kitten sandwich.

Absolutely tragic what can trigger the death of one person at the hands of another.

Do you mean I should not attach a gender specific label to it if a man murders his own offspring?

Okay, it's a deal.

(trust me, as one who has witnessed more abuse of children by the hands of a female than by males, you are preaching to the choir. I KNOW how brutal women can be, children are not ours to abuse, plain and simple, but momism is very gender specific, and disregards the problem of child abuse at large for a different agenda.)
09:15 PM on 02/25/2010
This is so sad. Prayers to the husband/father.
08:58 PM on 02/25/2010
Gee, what a surprise. The majority of children killed by their parents are killed by their mother, same goes for parental abuse.

isn't that merely a function of the fact that mothers are the primary and often sole caregivers? What are you trying to insinuate?
10:47 PM on 02/25/2010
That's a good question. The Department of Health and Human Services (i.e. the people compiling national statistics) don't report what percentage of those abused/killed had custody with whom, and more than likely don't know. However, the ratio of female child killers to male is close to 2:1 (per their 2008?, IIRC, report), which I assume would transcend the impact of the amount of sole caregivers. As for "abuse", this gets more complicated, as the vast majority ~60% of "abuse" cases are simple neglect; who is more likely to be involved in cases of simple physical abuse, as opposed to neglect cases (I wouldn't be surprised to see single parents being disproportionately represented in these instances.)

In any event, my point was that, as opposed to the views of some commenters, who expressed shock at the idea that mothers would murder their children, women do in fact commit violent crimes against their children; this is not an exclusively (or, perhaps, even predominantly) male domain.

Sorry to tell you, but it's true. I don't know what exactly that means...I doubt people are saying women are more evil, just that it does happen. If you hear a parent killed their child, best bet it was the mother.

The US government, specifically the DHHS. Here's a link: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm07/index.htm To quote their 2007 report, " Victim data were analyzed by relationship to their perpetrators. Nearly 39 percent (38.7%) of victims were maltreated by their mother acting alone (figure 3–6). Nearly 18 percent (17.9%) of victims were maltreated by their father acting alone. Nearly 17 percent (16.8%) were maltreated by both parents.". This was for abuse victims. For child fatalities, 27.1% were killed by their mother, 7.5 percent were killed by their mother and another, 18.1% were killed by both parents, 16.3% were killed by their fathers, 0.9% were killed by their fathers and another. The rest were killed by non-parents

So many people need mental health care, so many innocents suffering.
03:43 AM on 02/26/2010
I wonder how many of the mentally ill can afford to pay for health care,i remember some years ago health care cuts had mental patients loaded up with their few possessions on busses and dropped off at homeless shelters.Bad politics affect us on so many levels even though the visible evidence of these pitiful politics may be years in the making.
