Michelle Obama's Argyle Sweater: Love It Or Lose It? (PHOTO, POLL)

First Posted: 05/02/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:40 PM ET

While her husband was sneaking a fried chicken lunch in Savannah, Michelle Obama read the Dr. Seuss classic "The Cat In The Hat" to over three hundred local students to mark 'Read Across America Day.' The event took place at the Library of Congress.

For the occasion, the first lady wore a busy ensemble: a gray argyle sweater set with a silver metallic belt and a strand of pearls.

Bless her heart.....she is just tacky and that's the end of it.
Smart or not, she needs some help with her clothes. She needs to know what enhances her figure, especially in photographs.
When she is in public she is representing the U.S. and should look the part. I'm steel reeling over the shorts last summer.

Michelle should not wear belt at all.

A sweater really shouldn't fit that snugly. I don't think clothing manufacturers have caught up with the fact that a lot of us work out and our shoulders and arms are bigger (and stronger---yeh!!!). I bet Michelle is already wearing the largest size. But a sweater should fit more loosely than this one does.

Adding the belt and the necklace on top of that is just compounding my fashion claustrophobia...if belt, no necklace...do earrings instead. Or if necklace, no belt. Too busy.

LOL, well and def after reading some comments. I must say, love the Argyle. That said, the first thing which stood out was the very 70's metalic snake cinch belt. It was wrong on so many levels. However, my dad had a wife ( not my stylish mom) who was very indie. She would only wear things which contrasted with what the "norm" expected. I thought she was well off, however, followed her fashion sense all my life. Barock on FL. You look good in whatever you dorn. Who am I to decide otherwise.

All of this hoopla, she is toning down, wearing sleeves, and now people attack the belt.. What gives...

They're attacking the belt because it's an *ugly* belt.

IMO, she's too beautiful to be wearing such an ugly belt; a belt that actually ruined the look of a nice sweater set. But, obviously, that *is* her choice to do so.

I think it's wrong for people to attack HER, but I can understand the criticism of the belt.

All she needs to do is lose the belt. It's not necessary.

Hate that I just voted in that poll. The First Lady is above all of this.
09:46 AM on 03/03/2010
reducing one of the most intelligent ladies in this country who is exemplary on so many levels... to consistent articles about what she's wearing is such a gross injustice not only to the First Lady but to so many of us who could learn much from her... what missed opportunities to elevate our focus...
10:45 AM on 03/03/2010
Guess what? There are all kinds of articles and news about Michelle Obama's activities and initiatives. You are completely free to read them.
01:44 PM on 03/03/2010
on Huffpost.. the 'socially' conscious site?? Do the comparative on articles right here and see where their superficial focus lies..

Yes...one wonders why you who have such disdain for articles about Ms. Obama's fashions are deflating your focus and missing opportunities, or whatever....You are in the Style Vortex at the HuffPo. This is the fluffy stuff that some of us like to read when we are not commiting gross injustices by voting on silly accessories polls. Now excuse me I'm going to Google Michelle Obama and IQ and see what a smarty pants she really is and on how many levels.

Love the argyle but hate the belt. She uses too many belts and with the wrong outfits. Why the belt?

The belts are one of her signature looks, she likes them, obviously. But her hairstylist or makeup person needs glasses, she has "fuzz" growing on her temples and forehead...Her hairline needs cleaning up, immediately.
09:15 AM on 03/03/2010
I believe the "fuzz" is her natural hair and the rest are extensions or hairpiece. Not sure but I'm guessing they intentionally like it to look that way because it gives a more natural look and makes one think it is all her own hair.

A strange bedfellow indeed

the "fuzz" to which you are referring is her real hair, as is the rest of it. The rest of it is just chemically straightened, because no black person has hair that straight. You know how when you dye your hair, your roots grow out? It's the same with chemically straightened hair.

The person before me who commented "are you for real" --- I'm not sure how they meant it. If they meant, "wow that's a really dumb thing to say" they're close, and if they wanted some clarification, I hope this provides it.

Are you for real?

I guess people have the right to grouse about the First Lady's belts, but I also have the right to say it's getting really old. Like it or not, she's going to keep wearing them, and I must confess, I love it when she does, because I know it drives some crazy! She's never boring, unlike some who shall not be named. She's her own person, dresses for herself, to he11 with what others say. As long as she's presentable and representing us well, it doesn't matter to me. Most ensembles she picks, I like, some not so much, but she's not seeking my approval, so it's all good.

She's worn this before, but with a different wide belt. The sweater has a corresponding skirt, and look really great together....naturally w/out a belt.
12:40 AM on 03/03/2010
This is one of the most gorgeous sport sweater sets, that is, until the belt was added, which does nothing for her waist, bust, torso, hips. She could be gorgeous. Needs a better stylist, and once again, those eyebrows . . . She has come a long way, however.

I couldn't agree more. Love the FLOTUS hate the belts, all of them, they cut her in half .

The argyle is awesome, it's the metallic-ness that's not.
