Tiger Woods Did NOT Get Barack Obama Phone Call

First Posted: 05/02/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:40 PM ET

Tiger Woods Barack Obama

Last week, Golf Digest issued one of the most comprehensive Tiger Woods reports since his post-Thanksgiving car accident. Among the new details was the revelation that Woods had received calls from Presidents Obama and Clinton.

Turns out, he only heard from Clinton. As ESPN notes, Golf Digest has since issued a correction. The article originally accounted for calls from both presidents:

President Obama also made a personal call to offer encouragement. So did Bill Clinton, whose experience might be particularly instructive.

The piece has since been amended to quote Obama from a People magazine interview:

"I'm a strong believer that anybody can look within themselves, find their flaws and fix them," President Obama said. Bill Clinton, whose experience might be particularly instructive, made a personal call to offer encouragement.

Well now that we've got that straight, we can all move on with our lives besides Obama has better things to do than call that man.

Truth, lies, who cares?
The publication played to the prejudice of its readers to make money. Obviously, a single fact-checking phone call would have cleared up the matter, but where's the profit there?
It's a business decision: The lie will likely be more profitable than the truth; discussion over.
Corrections, denials, ombudsmen...all fail completely to change the minds of readers who are predisposed to believe the lie provided by their favorite magazine.
Here's a tip: How many advertisers called the publisher to complain about the blatantly false allegation?
Go on, guess. No one's looking.

I agree, they knew the lie would sell more than the truth. There is a lot in US history that is a lie, but they tell the lie because it sounds better than the truth. A comedian, Louis Black did an HBO special where he taught a class about all the lies told in history because it sound better than the truth, one example I remember was the story paul revere, where history states that he rode further than he actually did, he only rode 19 miles, however Israel Bistol rode 320, why because Paul Revere name sounds more American and it was easier to rhyme in the Long Fellow poem. so as they say if the legend becomes fact, then print the legend.

I keep reading that Woods is 1/4 white, but I have yet to see proof of it.

A significant number of AA are of mixed race but most of them don't walk around pointing out that they are only "1/2 black, 1/4 Native American and 1/4 caucasian", or whatever their racial makeup is, when others assume that they are black based on how they look. I, for one, think that is very telling that Woods does this.

Judster,

Tiger woods father Earl was 1/2 African American, 1/4 Chinese and 1/4 Native American. His mother Kultida is 1/2 Thai, 1/4 Chinese and 1/4 Dutch. That makes Tiger Woods 1/4 African American, 1/4 Thai, 1/4 Chinese, 1/8 Native American and 1/8 Dutch. Although simply Tiger describes himself as Cablinasian. He can define himself anyway he wants to, who are we to label. As an AA, we come in shades that looks blue black to white, but what does that have to do with anything.

"Some people" is the USA from the earliest of days the one-drop rule was implemented by the government. So now that there is a half-African/half-Caucasian president it's suddenly a problem. Can't have it both ways guys.
01:23 PM on 03/02/2010
The one drop rule is a lazy stupid adage. Call a spade a spade, our president is just as much white as he is black. Refering to him as just "black" is insulting to his mother who is most like. I could call him white and be just as correct as someone calling him black. He's biracial or mixed, not black.

EDITOR:

Why isn't this correction story on front page...as with the original...!? I would like to see HuffPo journalism standards are higher than most, but maybe NOT.

Same ole shigady...not to much different than NY Post or National Enquirer. Headlines on front page, but correction(s) deep within back section(s).

HuffPo can and...should do better.

any trolls care to apologize?

So what if he did..?? That's what friends do, unlike the MSM where you like to kick people when they're at their lowest. Very disappointed HUFFPO; first you get the original story all WRONG, then you try to make hay at the President's/Tiger's expense. Your novelty is beginning to wear off...I can find this kind of reporting in the MSM...
