Erick Erickson: 'GOP Does Not Want A Black Man In The Senate'

First Posted: 5/3/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Top Conservative Blogger Gop Racism Really Disgust

Despite paeans to diversity, the Republican Party clearly does not want a black man -- or any minority candidate -- in the Senate, leading conservative blogger Erick Erickson wrote Wednesday.

"It is starting to get really disgusting," Erickson, the editor-in-chief of the right-wing site RedState wrote. "First, the GOP said it needed diversity and chose the orange Charlie Crist over the Latino, Marco Rubio. Then the GOP said it needed to do better outreach in the black community, so it ignored Michael Williams in Texas and tried to find a rich white guy to run for the Senate. Now that Kay Bailey Hutchison has lost the Texas primary to Rick Perry without even making it into a runoff, the Washington, D.C. Republicans are scared to death a black man might actually get appointed to the Senate as a Republican."

Even South Carolina GOP Sen. Jim DeMint supports Michael Williams, Erickson noted. "This is really sick," he wrote.

Though Erickson said in a postscript that he was using "a hefty dose of sarcasm," he went on to restate the same point. "The fact remains that the GOP preaches diversity all the time and when presented with an attractive Latino and black candidate, they pass on both because they are too conservative," he wrote.

Yeap, much (most?) of the GOP establishment seems to have a problem in this area. I recall when the leading Republican presidential candidates declined to participate in the minority-oriented debate hosted by Tavis Smiley at Morgan State University and in the Univision debate, and also refused to address several major minority groups. And then they wonder why so many blacks and Latinos view them with suspicion.

Recall, too, that just a few months ago many Republicans were furious at RNC Chairman Michael Steele for having the candor to admit that the GOP screwed up when it was in power during most of the Bush years.

Not a surprise. I have commented beofre on Richard Steele's plight. Take a good look at the face of the Republican party. It's a clan ...if you know what I mean. And those bigots ain't about to change their ways.

I'll ask again, why would anyone want to belong to the GOP? They are a total disgrace to mankind!!

The GOP is entrenched with racists. Having Obama as presidents upsets their racists values to the core. The behavior of the GOP has been OBSTRUCT, DEFY, AND BE CONTRARY TO ANYTHING OBAMA IS FOR.

Obama has embarrassed the GOP over and over again with his intellect highlighting their lack there of. Dumb people don't like to be around smart people because by doing so highlights how little they really know. The GOP doesn't come up with solutions. They just whine and complain over the problems they themselves have created.

Term limits to government will help get rid of these career politicians entrenched in racism and corporate welfare. McConnell, Demint, Boehner, Cantor, L. Alexander and the rest need to be removed with their old stale ideas and replaced with a modern persons not locked in to old racist fear mongering ways.

Vote them out !

This is the same k n o b that refered to President Obama as the affirmative action candidate.

So I guess what he's saying is, they need a black guy in there.... to fill a quota????? These guys never thing about how the things they say in the front end will eventually lead to the outcomes in the back end. He might have said the quote and thought it was funny.... but he sets a tone that says we don't respect the president because he was picked for his skin color.... so now, any Republican primary or race involving a black man is going to look like the candidate was picked to prove that the Republicans aren't racist.... wow.....

The Republicans treat minorities just like they do the governmnet. When governing they muck it up then say See the government can't run anything. They trot out minorities that really aren't up to par like Bobbi J, Micheal S, Sarah P and when they epically fail, they just shrug their shoulders as if to say See, we gave these minorities a chance, they just failed.

I've noticed the same thing and totally agree. It's kind of like the saying, "If you believe it so it will be." Since the Repugs don't believe a woman can really be as accomplished or smart as a man, they get melodrama queen Palin who can't even finish a term and can't get out of a jam without telling a lie and getting into another one. Since they believe black folks are lazy, stupid, con-artists, and criminals they get shucking and jiving Michael Steele who can't keep his mouth shut, can't stop overspending on junk, and can't manage anything. They don't really want to have strong minorities or women in power because it inherently upsets the hidden white supremacist ideology that is critically important to their southern supporters. So they rush out to find these tokens who only end up reinforcing their prejudices. They desperately need to diversify if they want a prayer of having any power in the next 10 years, but they can't without losing their redneck teabagger base. And that base can half credibly say, "Why should we diversify any further? Look what happened when you put Michael Steele in charge." They can't get out of their own way. Poetic Justice really.

This is the last line of the accompanying article:

"The fact remains that the GOP preaches diversity all the time and when presented with an attractive Latino and black candidate, they pass on both because they are too conservative," he wrote.

First of all, this guy seems to be acknowledging that the problem for the National RNC is that they consider these particular potential candidates to be too conservative, not their ethnicity. That means they're out there on the lunatic right wing fringes of reality with the teabaggers. Certainly that's the case with Rubio. What Mr Erikson seems to be saying is that A) he thinks the teabag lunatics are mainstream Republicans (or wants that to be the case) and B) he wants the RNC to endorse candidates based on ethnicity regardless whether they represent the RNC's view or not.
08:58 AM on 03/04/2010
I believe he meant the RNC and their supporters are too conservative to support a non-white candidate for office--not that the candidates were too conservative.
