Eric Massa Resigning: New York Congressman Quitting After Sexual Harassment Allegations

First Posted: 05/05/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:45 PM ET

Massa Retirement

Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) plans to resign after becoming embroiled in an ethics controversy involving allegations of sexual harassment, according to Hotline OnCall and several other news outlets.

Earlier this week Massa said he would retire at the end of his House term in 2010, but downplayed reports that he would step down immediately.

On Thursday the House ethics committee confirmed that it was investigating sexual harassment allegations against Massa.

Massa's early exit brings the threshold for passing a health care reform bill in the House down to 216 votes. The New York Democrat had voted "no" on health reform because of his support for a single payer system.

Here is the letter Massa posted on his Congressional Web site on Friday:

An open letter from Rep. Massa

Two days ago as I sat reading my new annual CAT scan, having been told that the anomalies in the films may or may not be scar tissue, I decided to finally take the advice that my doctors have repeatedly given me, and that is to take care of my family and myself before my profession. After I decided not to run again I was told, for the first time, that a member of my staff believed I had made statements that made him feel "uncomfortable." I was told that a report had been filed with the Congressional Ethics Committee. At no point prior to this had any member of the Ethics Committee communicated with me directly - if fact I first read it on the internet.

I own this reality. There is no doubt in my mind that I did in fact, use language in the privacy of my own home and in my inner office that, after 24 years in the Navy, might make a Chief Petty Officer feel uncomfortable. In fact, there is no doubt that this Ethics issue is my fault and mine alone. But in the incredibly toxic atmosphere that is Washington D.C., with the destruction of our elected leaders having become a blood sport, especially in talk radio and on the internet, there is also no doubt that an Ethics investigation would tear my family and my staff apart. Some would say that this is what happens when you stand apart from political parties, which I have done. Others will say that this is what happens to a non politician when they go to Washington DC. I want to make something perfectly clear. My difficulties are of my own making. Period. I am also aware that blogs and radio will have a field day with this in today's destructive and unforgiving political environment. In that investigators would be free to ask anything about me going back to my birth, I simply cannot rise to that level of perfection. God knows that I am a deeply flawed and imperfect person.

During long car rides, in the early hours of the evening, late at night and always in private, I know that my own language failed to meet the standards that I set for all around me and myself. I fell short and I believe now, as I have always believed, that it is not enough to simply talk the talk, but rather I must take action to hold myself accountable.

Therefore, effective at 5 PM on Monday the 8th of March I will resign my position as the Federal Representative of New York's 29th Congressional District in the 111th Congress. I do so with a profound sense of failure and a deep apology to all those whom, for the past year, I tried to represent as our Nation struggles with problems far greater than anyone can possibly imagine. I hope that my family, constituents, and fellow Members of Congress can accept this apology as being both genuine and heartfelt and I wish for them and all Americans only the best. I will take all actions possible to ensure that my personal health is secured in that I know that mine is a far more fragile lifeline than most. For the millions of fellow cancer survivors with whom I share this experience, they, more than anyone else, will understand the honesty and openness in this statement.

I ask that members of the press respect the privacy of my family, my staff, and me at this time.

-Congressman Eric Massa

The current crop of Democrats departures is starting at time when they have substantial political capital and incumbency working in there favor. 2010 is going to be a bloody rout and if Obama continues to fall in the polls he will become a lame duck no matter how many seats the Left loses.
01:30 PM on 03/08/2010
Why isn't this recieving as much attention as the Democratic reps story?

Does anyone know what Massa actually did or said?

I wonder when his wife will figure out that her husband is gay.

I wonder why the party in power always has so many ethics violations?

The rout has begun and it is already worse that 2008 because it is from the heights of democrat ascendancy not after losing control of the house and Senate in 2006. The Left is awaking to the reality that productive people really don't like them along with their policies. Obama is incapable of maneuvering because he is an unaccomplished immature and rigid demagogue

I have to say this, Mr. Massa, that this was not the "blood sport" that you noted in your resignation.

In my opinion this was clearly a CIA hit job. And here is why I believe it to be.

You gave the finest 1 hour presentation in the Congress on the Hydrogen Economy and the nature of self provided electricity from hydrogen fuel cells that has ever been given in that chamber.

That wonderful presentation is on YouTube video's under your name.

That presentation would have sent shock waves through Exxon and their interlock with the Council on Foreign Relations and the CIA via the Rockefeller syndicate. The hydrogen economy would put the oil cartel out-of-business and you immediately surfaced on their radar as a result.

Your military record would be available to CIA eyes and a pyschological profile would have been prepared. Moving CIA assets into your office via administrative aides would enable some exploitation of those behavior characteristics in that profile.

And since the CIA has access to cancer causing agents used in their clandestine laboratories, well, you get the message.

Based on that Hydrogen Economy presentation, it would have been nice to see you continue that work.

Wow! A CIA hit job.

You would not happen to be a 9/11 truther, would you?

What the F.... is a Truther?

Google Search - Define: truther - one entry at Wiki returned
Bing Search - Define: truther - One entry at Wiki returned and one entry at UrbanDictionary.com which is a CIA backed site.

But since you asked, let me have at ya. Here is a statement made in the British Media

"According to a June 2009 statement by Britain's prestigious Institute of Nanotechnology,10 the Harrit study "provides indisputable evidence that a highly engineered explosive called nano-thermite was found in the dust of all three buildings that came down on 9/11 2001 in New York city. [sic] This advanced explosive incorporating nanotechnology is only available to sophisticated military labs."

I would quote the plight of Beverly Eckert, a 9/11 widow, but that would be away over your head.

Any more drive-by keyboard smearing, Mr. CIA man?

The rarest species is a politician who has no bagman. Watch any public official long enough and you will see the bagman making his delivery. There is no better reason to seek public office than having the opportunity to gather hundreds or many time millions in tax free cash. It would be accurate to imagine over a trillion dollars annually being transported by bagmen in the US alone. Very rarely is this method of corruption uncovered. The bagman just transports the cash and never has any knowledge of the deal.

Yeah, it's too bad that when Republicans are charged or guilty of similar failings, they hang onto their office much, much longer. They could learn something from the Dems in that regard.
05:15 PM on 03/06/2010
I think that Charlie Rangel has set a record for hanging on the longest.

Draining the swamp, should be draining the swamp. If Nancy Pelosi used those clear terms, then she has to back it up. I agree with her that we have to root out corruption within our own party, so we don't get caught up in the false equivalencies the right make. I have no idea what happened in this case, but in less then a week he is resigning, as opposed to "wide-stance" who served out his term.

In 2006, then-Rep. Nancy Pelosi led a campaign cry to end "the culture of corruption that has thrived under this Republican Congress."

Eric Massa - resigned from congress
Charlie Rangel - under ethics investigation
David Paterson - never in congress
John Edwards - noy in congress
blago - never in congress

If this is your evidence that Nancy Pelosi is doing a poor job at policing congressional misconduct, Your evidence is a bit thin.

At least the shamed Democrats have the decency to resign, plus they're not at all supported by their party. Republicans on the other hand have no shame and they all continue to live large on their taxpayer-funded jobs, with full support of their ilk.

This is sad on so many levels. I saw Congressman Massa, several times on with
Ed Schultz. Mr. Massa was a passionate, strong Progressive who spoke the truth.
He wasn't going to sign on for a pathetic watered down healthcare bill.
He wanted a bill that was robust. He called out Obama and was tough on
him. He was a passionate, important, and much needed voice in the
Congress. That's why this is so sad, on so many levels

BTW, what do ratings have to do with anything? You selling ad time for Fox or something? You guys still paying cable systems to carry Fox News and Fox Business or have you finally been able to make the leap to for-profit status?
