Bob Barker Loves PETA, Donates $2.5 Million For New Offices

Bob Barker

LOS ANGELES — Bob Barker has donated $2.5 million to help the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals open a new location in Los Angeles.

The retired game show host and spay and neuter champion will cut the ribbon Wednesday at the Bob Barker Building on Sunset Boulevard.

PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk says Barker paid for an entire building to be renovated.

The building will be home to the group's media, marketing, youth outreach and campaign departments.

The 86-year-old Barker delivered his spay and neuter message on "The Price Is Right" for a quarter century. Since he retired in June of 2008, he has taken his activism on the road, promoting freedom for whales, an end to the fur trade and other causes.

I agree that some of PETA's tactics are "over the top" but I think they rely on their outrageousness to draw attention to their causes. People are so complacent about everything. At least PETA gets you to take notice -- and their goal, I think, is for people to have a strong reaction to what they do. It gets people talking -- just like it is here! I'd to share a recent experience I had with PETA. My sister lives across the street from a neglected dog. It's old and arthritic and it's kept outside with no shelter, even when it's freezing cold (my sister lives in PA). Since I'm a member of PETA, I emailed them about the situation, because I read that they were providing dog houses for animals in similar circumstances. They responded to my email IMMEDIATELY and promised to take action right away, while protecting my sister's anonymity. I think PETA is an incredibly compassionate organization. If someone doesn't take action to help end the suffering and torture of animals -- who will? Torture of any kind, perpetrated against ANY LIVING THING, is reprehensible. I think Bob Barker is a lovely man. Not many men care as much as he does about being kind to animals. What on God's green earth is wrong with that?

Thank you Bob Barker for all you have done to be a voice for the voiceless.

You are very much appreciated!

I think donating is a wonderful thing and should be your choice to where your money goes. BUT!!!!PETA has been in the middle of alot of misguidings. They are really a bunch of rich people that like for you to think they are do gooders. BUT... look at the news they have used our our First Lady under false pretensesand Tiger Woods. They have been seen throwing dead animals in a trash containersread the news.. Im the biggest animal fan there ever could be. But I like to deal with people who care for others not themselves. If PETA has a say no one will be allowed to own a animal of any kind.Thats alittle to bossy for me. Where does their money go anyway? Tell us.........

Pepper....I'm an animal lover who doesn't love PETA's methods either. They've turned animal welfare into a trendy "celebrity" topic instead of the basic ethical issue it really is. Best Friends and other organizations do a much better job. That being said, you have to hand it to Bob Barker. And while I would have wished that he gave the money to other animal rights organizations, I still applaud him and believe him to be one of the most profound men of conscious in this country.

Bob - Thank you for providing resources that will enable change. At 60 yrs old, I'm a newly converted vegetarian - so enlightenment can happen at any age!. I grieve for the suffering of animals and have hope the waves you are starting will spread worldwide!

First off, its a specious argument to say you should help humans and not animals. I have found that animal lovers more compassion than most people, so much compassion so that it isn't just limited to humans but all of God's creatures. Most of the humans that try to make that argument have compassion for no one but themselves. I would bet that the average animal lover contributes to more to all causes than some of the people above.

Secondly, Bob Barker is a rarity in American society - someone who puts his values above money. He turned down major money from the Miss America pageant because of their use of fur. VERY few people do that and he is to be admired.

People like 'Exposingthelie2" is an anti-animal, pro-animal research self-serving front paid for by the animal research community, so now they're 'exposed.' These other jerks who condemn Bob Barker for helping PETA (who in turn helps countless animals via their programs) are animal haters. And those who don't like him donating to any animal cause are also animal haters. I'd like to know what 'human' caused THEY donate to! None. So, go, go , go, Bob Barker and PETA! Bob has done so much....at least he puts his money where his mouth is.

If people should only donate to human causes, they will still be judged for donating to the wrong one. If we should give to orphanages over animals, then how about hospitals over orphanages? Or cancer over diabetes? Or breast cancer over leukemia? Where does it end? Who gets to be the judge?

It is impossible to determine that one cause is more worthwhile than others. They all need support. And they all need advocates and activists. People who advocate for animals free up other people to advocate for education, for example.

I am not personally condoning all groups or their actions. I am pointing out how this kind of judgement is not beneficial to anyone.

Fool.

I know of several orphanages here in the Deep South that are involved with the care of little children. They never have enough money to care for their charges. PETA seems to concentrate more on non-humans rather than care for our children in need of parents, food, clothing, education and love.

PETA: animals over kids.

Barker! You are a foolish old man.
03:45 AM on 03/12/2010
then i say stop having children.
09:49 AM on 03/12/2010
I agree. There should be 'spay and neuter' programs for people who irresponsibly screw around, never heard of contraceptives, pop out baby after baby, knowing they can't take care of them, and then dump them on society or keep them around so they can get Welfare....now that's the American Way, right? We taxpayers just keep paying the bill for them.

"Whitley2009" ...how much have you donated to these so-called southern orphanages you mention?
Since you made this story up anyway, PETA is a wonderful organization that helps Animals.....not people...that's what they do. There are many times more organizations and money directed at human needs....so your little story hold no water and you are just an anti-animal person in disguise.
So make sure you dig deep into YOUR pockets and help those poor little Southern children, ok?

Frankly, Whitley - you don't know what you're talking about -

Peta rescues lots of animals but never puts much effort into finding these poor souls homes. They "kill" (some people like to use the misleading term euthenize) 95% of the animals they rescue.

You don't have to believe me, just get on your computer and start to google - you will find information about PETA's percentage of adoptions versus rescue - it will turn you stomach.

I've been doing animal rescue work for years and also know people who've worked "for" and with PETA- most decent people head for the hills when they find out just what PETA's all about. Any group can go around and create controversey ( like PETA), but not every group trys to conceal a below average adoption rate with phoney campaigns - like save the "fish".

Looks like Bob BarKer didn't do his homework either. Shame on him.

Shame on you Bob Barker, with all of the animals that need help or shelter, you give this money to put PETA's fat backsides in chic shelter. Think of all of the animals in shelters that could be saved with that money, or the shelters that could stay open and save animals or or even the cities that could use that money to improve shelters and perhaps save animals from euthansia. Shame on you for shwoing all you really care about is your name on a building

14 year old homeless human needs lung transplant versus PETA animal welfare needs new offices.
Gotta love American priorities

I love animals, but I agree with you. Even if it the money went to help families in debt from medical bills, anything would have been better than PETA.
03:47 AM on 03/12/2010
get a job then,
09:35 AM on 03/12/2010
Not 'American' priorities....why don't YOU volunteer to give YOUR lung and a kind donation for the operation since you are so concerned and put your money where your mouth is. Just another anti-animal person in disguise. By the way, do you realize how many BILLIONS go to Isreal so they can devastate the Palastinian children? Now, that's the American Way!

Everyone should STOP donating to all political campaigns (since the corporations will drown us anyway) and just give to the animals.

I have always wondered what fruitcakes were funding PETA's misguided efforts, and expensive advertising. Now I know.

Bob, COME ON DOWN!
09:39 AM on 03/12/2010
Fruitcake? Where have YOU donated YOUR hard-earned money lately? It's HIS money, not YOURS.
Complain to Congress about the Billions given to Isreal in grants and weapons or the BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars given to AIG to bail them out.

Salvation Army, Manna Soup Kitchen, Muscular Dystrophy, Haitian Relief, Recordings for the Blind, and the homeless I meet along the way.

And I DO complain to Congress about bailing out wall street and the bankers.

Still consider me a fruitcake?

I love Bob Barker and Brigitte Bardot. I wish Al Qaida would drop all that Islamo Fascism and get into Animal Rights instead. I wish animals had a Lenin to stand up for them.
