Obama was neither paid for her appearance nor compensated for travel and security. Michelle didnt make a dime at that speech.

at Merced?- true
it is not Michelle's issue, and she was great
it is an issue of the University disclosing to the students in advance

the cost of ALL high profile visitors, speakers should be disclosed to students in advance of events

so that the community is clear on it all

it cost UC Merced $1 million when she gave the speech last year

students just need to be aware of and told the cost and the source of funding
so it is not a surprise

Merced is a bad example of cost because the university is still in its infancy so they did not possess a lot of the infrastructure necessary for a more lavish commencement. GWU is unlikely to incur the kinds of transportation and audio visual costs that had Merced struggled with.

true, it is just that many students claimed sticker shock
the other difference is that UC is supposedly public -while GWU is private

Back to the clouds, sparky. UC didn't plan adequately. "Students just need to be aware" that the First Lady is coming and has challenged them to a community service effort.
