Corey Haim collapsed in the bedroom of his mother's apartment and four prescription bottles were found nearby ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

We've learned Corey had been sick the last couple of days with flu-like symptoms. The medications recovered, however, were not related to his illness, sources tell TMZ.

Luckily, I missed the entire "two Coreys" thing. Too old to care. This Haim fellow creeps me out. Sad soul. I am always very said for such tragic souls.

Flu-like symptoms can be a result of opiate (re:heroin) withdrawal.

I'ts my understanding he was given a change in prescription, possible drug combination plus the flu may have been the cause.

I am an asthma sufferer and have been struggling with a very nasty cold for over two weeks now. I was in the ER last week with breathing difficulty and the doc gave me codeine cough syrup, xanax, prednisone, and amoxicillin to take in conjunction with my usual asthma meds. Two days into the cocktail and I was even worse off than before; I feel that if I had continued the meds they gave me I would have died in my sleep from respiratory failure...we follow doctors orders to our detriment sometimes. Drinking lots of herbal teas and resting for the remainder of this illness.

You make a great point. Doctors or not, these combinations of prescriptions seem like a dangerous combination. What a tragedy we stuff the body with such volatile combinations and hope for the best. Watch the toxicology reports on this one. A combination of meds probably helped contribute to the end result

Not a doctor, but not stupid either...

Why is it that all of these recent accidental overdose deaths involved an illness on top of the pills? Heath Ledger and Brittany Murphy both had pneumonia. Now they're saying Haim might've had something like the flu?

I think the prescription meds are only treating the symptoms of simpler health problems and the meds are making people sicker because the overall cause of the problems continues. Things like depression, poor diet, stress, dehydration, poor sleep.

is this the new intro to all young celebrities death these days, they had flu like symptoms? Isn't that what they said about Brittany Murphy she had flu like symptoms? I think people just need to come out and say...these people died of drug abuse and this is what can happen to you if you follow along that same path. Doesn't really make them bad people, makes them troubled people that people decided to just look past their issues...and now they have to make up really lame excuses why they are dead. Flu like symptoms.

I thought the same thing... what a crock.. "symptoms of the flu".

So many expected this. It's sad that the prophecy was fulfilled. The level of prescription drug use in this country is absolutely out of control. Advertisements for drugs have become accepted commonplace and it is NOT helping ANYONE!

It is a dream to wish that people will stop making irresponsible decisions. As it is, most unhappy or discontented people are the ones who typically develop the habit of drug use; thus, we might as well wish for ‘everyone to just be happy all the of time’ and then no harm or disappointment would come to any of us.

Corey Haim was an addict and most addicts usually die when they are trying to slow down or stop using. As one’s tolerance is greatly reduced at that time and they get the urge to use--and more often than not they will--they do not realize they may have a lower tolerance and will take the same quantity of drug they are accustomed to. This is what leads to the majority of overdoses.

If he was trying to slow down his use, I imagine he became slightly dope sick (and not the full-on-second-day-dope-sick) which brings about in the beginning flu-like symptoms; runny noise, sneezing, and water eyes. It’s unpleasant and it will only become worse; it is at this time the weakness for the drug literally pushes one toward a narcotic type of drug to get rid of this increasingly intolerable sickness. Corey most likely took medications for the flu-like symptoms and it was still in his system when he caved to his habit. The deadly combination of the prescription drugs with a narcotic drug that is the undoing.

Because apparently you've been living under a rock since the mid 80's.

That's not so unusual. I mentioned his death to a girl at work who is th exact same age as me and she didn't have a clue who he was.

Other than a recent reality show (that I didn't watch), he has been pretty off the radar since at least the early 1990s. Not to big a suprise that he might be unknown to those of us who were teens/college age during the 1980s.

Typical story in some ways - Child 'star',... semi-transitioned to adult 'star' in mostly bad movies,... with issues and continued drug addiction problems.

Sad story, mediocre actor. I wish him and his family and friends peace.

Too many people end up dying when they have flu symptoms and decide to combine cold medication together with other drugs. They either end up with a heart attack or respiratory failure. Unless you have pneumonia or a respiratory infection, you're probably better off taking no medication at all and letting the virus run it's course.

How sad. I am glad that he was not alone when it happened, but if eel for his mom to have to see her son die in front of her.
