Obama's Nobel Money: President Chooses Charities To Receive Prize

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to donate the $1.4 million from his Nobel Peace Prize to helping students, veterans' families and survivors of Haiti's earthquake, among others, drawing attention to organizations he said "do extraordinary work."

Obama is giving a total of $750,000 to six groups that help kids go to college. Fisher House, which provides housing for families with loved ones at Veterans Administration hospitals, will receive $250,000, the White House said Thursday. And the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, for which two former presidents are raising money to rebuild earthquake-ravaged Haiti, will receive $200,000.

"These organizations do extraordinary work in the United States and abroad helping students, veterans and countless others in need," Obama said in a statement. "I'm proud to support their work."

Obama was chosen for the Nobel award more for his aspirations and approach than his accomplishments thus far. The Nobel committee honored him for changing the tenor of international politics and for pursuing goals Obama says will require worldwide effort, such as nuclear disarmament and reversing global warming.

Obama himself was surprised by the award, and aides said at the time he would donate the cash prize to charity.

The Fisher House donation would help pay for three new homes at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Dover Air Force Base, where the bodies of Americans killed overseas are flown.

"It's work that needs to be done for these men and women who have served this nation so gallantly," Fisher House Foundation Chairman and CEO Kenneth Fisher said in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's a privilege to serve these men and women and these families because they give so much to this nation."

The funds for Haiti would go to the rebuilding effort led by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. A Jan. 12 earthquake wrecked Haiti and killed an estimated 200,000 people, and the U.S. is playing an active role in rebuilding the country.

In addition, Obama plans to give $125,000 apiece to groups that help students go to college: College Summit, a national nonprofit that works with elementary and middle school students to boost college enrollment rates; the Posse Foundation, which gives full college scholarships to public school students who might be overlooked by traditional scholarship programs; United Negro College Fund; the Hispanic Scholarship Fund; the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation; and the American Indian College Fund.

And Obama is donating $100,000 to AfriCare, which funds HIV/AIDS programs, public health programs, water resource development and agriculture in 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. He will give $100,000 to the Central Asia Institute, which promotes education for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Obama accepted his peace prize just days after announcing he was ramping up U.S. involvement in the war in Afghanistan.

(This version CORRECTS name of charity to Fisher House.)

WOW. The right-wingers sure are resentful today learning how generous and noble President Obama really is. They rarely have to face a reality and they are not handling it very well.

They hate that this wonderful man was honored with this prestigious award and argue that he shouldn't have received it, as if the Nobel committee needs Limbo to tell them what to do.

As far as the Limbo Koolaid gang's talking point that it is against the law for him to accept the prize, where were you when Chick Deney's Haliburton was reciveng billions of dollars in non-bidded contracts, as he was falsifying intelligence that sent us to war???

If the Limbo kool-aid gang had no respect for the Nobel committee, the trolls wouldn't out here in full force with their panties tied in a knot.

I hope so this president has increased the number of combat troops to this highest in this decade. He is now a bigger warmonger (in terms of deployed combat troops) than Pres Bush.

All we hear from the anti war movement is silence.

He should give up the money he did not ear through actions.

Yah, that's what the world thinks of Pres O, that's why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I say the world knows nothing and only Limbo speaks the truth. Why can't the world see what we see???

Want to bet some right-wing media type spent all last night, playing Seven Degrees of Separation, looking for connections between the organizations that are getting donations and Jeremiah Wright, Al Qaeda, ACORN, and Osama Bin Laden?

Maybe Van Jones once talked to somebody who talked to somebody who knew somebody who once dated someone who used to work at Fisher House. EEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!!

Whereas:

"I've danced with a man, who's danced with a girl, who's danced with the Prince of Wales.

It was simply grand, he said "Topping band" and she said "Delightful, Sir"

Glory, Glory, Alleluia! I'm the luckiest of females

For I've danced with a man, who's danced with a girl, who's danced with the Prince of Wales."

So I guess that means that I danced with the Prince of Wales.

Well, there is a link to Bin Iaden. He donanted to the Clinton-Bush Haiti fund. The Bush familiy has close ties to Bin Iaden's family. I don't know that Fox News will run with that one though.

Hummm -- so Obama gives his prize money away and some of you are angry about that????? I just don't get some people.
01:06 PM on 03/12/2010
If he donated every sent he has, some of the tr-olls here would still have something negative to say about it.

Make that "cent".

PS Lastly, I closed my mortgage brokerage in 2001 rather than become complicit in the largest crime against the American people....something Obama lacks the integrity to do (i.e.; to not become complicit in the banking industry). Democrats and Republicans...different sides of the same coin.

The take this comment to a BANKING thread. This is about Obama donating his award money.
12:23 PM on 03/12/2010
I had posted an earlier comment (like 4 pages from the back) only to be jumped on by every HP blogger on the planet. My statement is this was "meaningless". From that, I got I was a "projecting" Republican and basically hit over the head like I was beaten BY A GROUP OF REPUBLICANS!! What is it with people that when you voice your opinion (objectively), but they don't like say...so THEY ATTACK and Democrats are NO BETTER than Republicans. My statement is that Obama giving the medal is TRIVAL...i.e.; no skin off his nose and thus only a "token" item. I said I much like the story of the British Millionaire GIVING IT ALL AWAY and thought it was more HEARTFELT. I received at least 15 nasty comments....by people who didn't understand the comparative....and anything said negatively about Obama is JUST NOT TOLERATED (sounds very much like the Republicans with Bush). Then I was asked...what have I done lately? Just clear the record....I am a progressive and a socialist (not a Republican and not Democrat, although I do vote for Obama). What have I done...well, this week I took clothes to the Salvation Army and donated food to United Food Bank. Two weeks ago, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and I was with Cindy Sheehan at Crawford...WHAT DO YOU DO?

People misinterpret. It sounds likes you have made personal sacrifices for the better good. It's true, he does not need the money and is a token gesture, but none of us know what personal sacrifices he and his family make that go unreported for the better good.

Keep up the great work!

He talks the talk and walks the walk and THAT is a great human being.

Sarah Palin "promised" to donate her speaking fee to a charity too.
Guess who benefits from Palin's charity?

She recently grabbed an estimated $20,000 of swag at the Academy Awards suites and all the while real Stars turn around and hand over their swag bags to a charity in return for a tax write off.
Palin was allowed in the suite with the understanding she would not only turn the swag over to their charity BUT with the assurance that she would donate $1700 personally. Neither has happened to date.

It's like Goofus & Gallant and I'll let you decide which is which.
