'American Idol' Down To Final 12

American Idol Final Twelve

LYNN ELBER   03/12/10 01:09 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — And then there were 12 on "American Idol."

After the audience voted, the singing contest said goodbye Thursday to Alex Lambert of North Richland Hills, Texas; Todrick Hall of Arlington, Texas; Lilly Scott of Littleton, Colo. and Katelyn Epperly of West Des Moines, Iowa.

It was no surprise that the judge's favorite from previous weeks, Michael "Big Mike" Lynche, made the cut.

Lynche dazzled the judges with his performance of "This Woman's Work" and made judge Kara DioGuardi dissolve into tears.

Lambert, who had trouble overcoming his shyness on stage, looked downcast when he learned his fate.

"There's a lot of things America hasn't seen me do yet," he said, adding, "I wish could just have broken out of my shell."

Judge Ellen DeGeneres gave him a verbal pat on the back.

"You're so good. Don't ever stop believing in yourself," she told him.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening was the audience's rejection of Scott. Before the decision was announced, host Ryan Seacrest stood with Scott and Katie Stevens on stage and asked the judges to weigh in on the fact that one of them would be heading home.

DioGuardi, who had championed both singers, said she found it striking that it came down to these two. She said Scott was someone who understood herself as an artist and Stevens was struggling to do that, but had the advantage of being more contemporary.

"I thought I did really well. I put my heart into every performance," Scott said. "I just know there's an audience out there for me."

Judge Randy Jackson liked Hall's performance of "Somebody to Love," while Cowell said it was a mixed performance.

"This has been an awesome experience. I came here to prove that I'm not just a dancer, I can also sing. I think that I've done that," said the 24-year-old Hall.

He got some encouragement from Jackson, who said, "Fantastic, dude."

DioGuardi criticized Epperly for "going through the motions" on her version of "I Feel the Earth Move" this week. Cowell compared her performance to request night at a restaurant, but added that he did like her full, curly locks that evoked the song's composer, Carole King.

"I'm not stopping now. It's just a push actually, for me. I'll do more stuff," Epperly said.

The photo accompanying this post is misleading. People that don't watch the show are going to think that the Final 12 is all guys.

Regardless of who wins, Crystal Bowersox is awesome.

Sorry, but there are no standout stars this season IMO. But after they shafted Adam and proved to be a contest that's not about talent, I have zero expectations.

They 'cast' like any other reality show, which is why the majority of the 'cast' is Caucasian and cute.

They 'cast' personalities and stories over talent, then pretend to be surprised by the mediocre singers they THEY CAST!

They 'cast' to eliminate easily, which makes it pretty easy to predict the finalists. Yet in the process, some young hopefuls are led to believe that they're actually good, when in reality, many wouldn't make it past round one in a real Broadway, gospel or Apollo audition.

It just wasn't fun watching Alex Lambert or Lily Scott perform, and they both made terrible song choices this week. They won't be missed...

Alex Lambert - will be missed in my household. What were the judges thinking, criticizing him for his delivery? Maybe there were no "wow" moments, but sometimes just the honest delivery of a song by a luxurious voice like Lamberts is enough to touch a listeners soul. Don't change a thing, Alex. Keep pursuing your dream. I look forward to downloading your tunes some time in the near future.

Too bad he didn't get to stay for another week. He was just getting some confidence and getting his stride going. I thought he would have kept on improving. He's got a good voice, certainly better than some of the ones that made it.

Kris Allen's single (Live Like We're Dying) just went PLATINUM, not gold.

I think if they didn't have the equal gender format for the final 12, there would be likely 8 ladies and 4 guys left. Lilly Scott should have been in... in fact I think all the last 12 women were better than most of the guys this season.

Either way, the final four come down to Bowersox, Magnus, Big Mike and Generically Tall and Slim Country/Clapton Dude.

People give me a lot of crap for watching this show... and last night really proved that they may be right. Lilly and Alex should not have went home.... what a sham this show is.

Alex Lambert was adorable in a retro Phil Everly sort of way.

American gets it wrong again. At least we know you don't have to win Idol to have a career!

No, but you can buy Ryan Bingham's or James Hunter's.
Two artists who deserve 1000x the attention these next LiteFM wannabes get.
And I'm in therapy.

What?!!! Alex Lambert and Lily Scott. What was America Thinking? I am seriously hoping that there is a dramatic twist that brings them back around! My husband I were floored!

Yep... my two favourites. Lily Scott was far and away the best of the bunch, in my opinion.

But let's be real... she's out for the same reasons that Leonard Cohen, or Bob Dylan, or Johnny Cash, or Joan Baez, or KD Lang, or Patsy Cline herself would never make it to the top 12 on American Idol... 'cause when it comes right down to it, most people are stupid...

The only one I was sorry to see go was Alex Lambert ..I mean what a voice, addictive ! There are so many "good" singers and performers out there ,but really, most sound the same, nothing really special about them. My son 15 yrs old, picked Alex as a favorite for that very reason,so it's not so much a generational opinion. I think someone like Niel Young,Dylan,or Petty ,should nab this kid up and take him on tour with them ,let him open for them maybe, just to give him experience and confidence and some great mentoring.Alex should not be allowed to be lost to the world of music,I have a feeling he belongs with the greats. So..after all is said and done, maybe it's good he didn't make the top 12,touring with them and all that..he belongs touring with and learning from some of the greats ,like those I mentioned.
11:31 AM on 03/12/2010
Agree with you. I though he was a lot better than most of the other singers, There were a lot of subtle things he was doing with his voice. Hope he does not give up because I see a lot of potential there.

Nope - nothing subtle in his voice - just nerves and inexperience.
Hall was a complete package - will be very successful.
Scott was unique, but obviously a bit out of most people's range.
Lambert was really the only one that needed to leave - some others that were kept are weak and won't make it but another week or two.
Your son's expertise notwithstanding of course.

Oh - been a musician for 40 years.
Son is accomplished opera tenor.
Wife is choir director.
All older than 15 of course.

I agree, but he is going to be very successful. If he gets a good songwriter, willing to take some risks, he could end up one of the best known AI contestants 20 years from now.

Do people really believe that the voters choose the top 12? I doubt it. It's carefully orchestrated behind the scenes for the sake of "good TV". This show is so lame. Does anyone believe that Kris got more votes than Adam Lambert? Again, it was done for their "shocking ending" TV.

Lambert's CD went gold= sold 500k while Kris's CD has low sales. Lambert was chosen to be the lst performer on the recent VH1 Unplugged which debuted online a few days ago and if anyone can look at those performances and say he lost to Kris through voting well, they are really drinking AI's Kool Aid.
01:11 PM on 03/12/2010
I think that there are plenty of musicians with first albums out that would love to have Kris Allen's "low" record sales of nearly 300,000, not to mention his single, Live Like We're Dying, just went gold. Not everyone is enamored of a showboat like Adam Lambert (I say ho-hum since I saw the original David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars, and Lambert is nothing new, IMO.) The fact is that both Lambert and Allen haven't set the CD world on fire with their sales--in fact, previous AI winners and runner-ups have done much better, but many people no longer buy CDs but purchase on ITunes, and Kris is doing very well in that respect.

As for the current AI, I am only sad about Alex leaving as I loved his unique voice.

Check out VH1's Unplugged online of Adam Lambert doing 4 or so numbers. It's very impressive. You cannot deny his vocal ability when you see this. It's getting high marks from people who were not fans until they saw the Unplugged set.

and David Archuleta lost because voting that night went on for 4 hours, 2 hours later than his voting contingent were allowed to stay up. David Cook fans were older, and had a voting advantage.

I don't think SImon liked Archuleta's controlling Dad.
