Tonic.com:

In full Tonic spirit, let's learn something and try to make something positive out of this. Last night, a friend of mine (he wants to remain anonymous) sent me a link to a CNN article on Constance and, expectedly, was appalled at the situation.

He wants to fund the prom. In fact, he's going to match, dollar for dollar, the first $25,000 we raise for the prom. Anything not spent will go to fund a scholarship.

Spread the word. Let's throw Constance and all the cool kids in Fulton a party they'll never forget. If you're willing to help, send a non-tax-deductible donation to this Paypal Account and we'll sort it out.

MediaCurves.com conducted a media study among viewers of a news clip about a school’s cancellation of prom due to a lesbian student wanting to take her girlfriend to the dance. Results found that the majority of viewers (77%) believed that the school’s actions were an act of discrimination. Furthermore, the vast majority of viewers (88%) indicated that the actions by the school were not appropriate. More in depth results can be seen at: http://www.mediacurves.com/NationalMediaFocus/J7781-PromCancellation/Index.cfm
Thanks,

This townn eeds a new mayor, and education in tolerance. Geez. They are probably self righteous religious. Somehow I doubt this is what j would do. This type is more 2 faced than ever of late.

I just wish Constance went to a high school like Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia and had schoolmates like David Shepherd and Travis Price.

It is a shame that school officials in Itawamba County had an opportunity to teach some lessons about tolerance and standing up for what you believe, and instead chose to teach a lesson about authoritarian enforcement of conformity.

My kids' high school has a pink day every year. Which is even more special when there's a fairly large goth group who normally wear all black.

She is an American. And an American has rights. If they are taken away. It is not only wrong. It is illegal. She should press charges against the school or board which pulled the prom. That simple. I support the rights of everyone.

She has the right not to be excluded from the prom on the basis of her orientation, but it is only a legal right if the laws where she lives state it. But, nowhere anywhere does anything say a kid has a right to a prom. Schools don't have to throw proms. They should, but they don't have to. Basically, if they offer one, they can't say no gay kids allowed. So, they decided not to offer one. Legal, but d*ckish. There's no way to press charges because there's no crime to charge them with.

CDMelty is right, it may be wrong. If they only let her not go they could be breaking the law. But there is no where in the constitution where is says a prom is a right. As long as nobody has a prom her rights aren't being innfringed.

Actually, if they cancel the prom based on preventing having gay students at the prom, then they are just as legally guiIty of discrimination as they would be if they had a prom and excluded them. They had already told her she couldn't come. They didn't cancel until she decided to fight it. That is still discrimination. In fact, them cancelling the prom further injures her because it subjects her to the anger of fellow students

Interesting opinion, it could be assumed that a "cool kid" is just a baseless expression of goodwill towards kids who have themselves been bullied both by peers and, in this case, the entire school system of Louisiana.

The whole situation looks more like a political point being exacted at the expense of these two girls, which is now being compensated in the form of a donation to seeing their prom realized in full effect at the very least. Everybody wins, the more you donate - the more of a point you prove, the closer these girls get to having their personal wishes fulfilled. Only the bigots lose here.

I also apologize for digressing. Certain key words or phrases have a unsavory effect on me, which lead me to all sorts of tangents.

Good luck with the fund raising.

I think the term "cool kid" in this case was meant to refer to the other students who don't have a problem with the orientation of the young woman at the center of this story.

What is a "cool kid"? Somebody who acts like a blind lapdog for special favors? Sounds more like 'subservient kid' to me...

Or somebody who always parties, drugs up, boozes, shags, and disregards education?

That's how it was 20 years ago, and modern day media has shown nothing has improved since... even Robert Pattison, the guy from that twilight fluff, saying he deserved being beaten up in school. Provoking is fairly sinister a thing to do (which is bad enough), but that's no justification for beating the snot out of him. Go to the principal. Enough people who would have done that could have gotten that pompous jackanapes expelled.
