The Daily Texan :

Hundreds of people will hit the streets of downtown Austin this weekend for South by Southwest, the 10-day festival showcasing music, film and interactive conferences held in mid-March.

What started as a music-only festival has since expanded to include film and interactive events. Austin used to be a fabulous place. No freeways and no traffic; cheapest city in the country with over 100K population; very cheap utilities; great Mexican food; Barton Springs pool was free; Janis Joplin at the REAL Threadgill's (not the present fake one) for the price of a beer; Armadillo World Headquarters (torn down for a glass box building that went BK); most unique beer joints in the world (One Knite, Deep Eddy, Scholtz Garten); the avant garde, elegant weirdness of Presidio Theaters; an ice cream joint called "Nothing Strikes Back". You could get anywhere at any time in 10 minutes.

Now, the place is crawling with 1990 Republican yuppies, worse traffic than LA and effete snobs in Cadillac Escalades.

Stay away and be afraid.

Austin still is a fabulous place. Where are you running into all of these republicans? The suburbs?
