Virginia Thomas, Wife Of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Launches Tea Party Group

Virginia Clarence Thomas Tea Party

Los Angeles Times:

As Virginia Thomas tells it in her soft-spoken, Midwestern cadence, the story of her involvement in the "tea party" movement is the tale of an average citizen in action.

"I am an ordinary citizen from Omaha, Neb., who just may have the chance to preserve liberty along with you and other people like you," she said at a recent panel discussion with tea party leaders in Washington. Thomas went on to count herself among those energized into action by President Obama's "hard-left agenda."

But Thomas is no ordinary activist.

And Roberts was whining about the appearance of the Justices in the partisan atmosphere of the State of the Union?

I should rather think that he would be more concerned about the appearance of impropriety and impartiality that spouses of the Justices make in the arena of partisan politics. Sure everyone has a right to speak out, just like Justices have the right to resign when the appearance of  Read More...

Who's afraid of Virginia? Clarence, that's who! He was a non-affirming selection, and it remains a pity that he was. During the confirmation hearings we could see the hostility brewing, from both of them, and with a basic understanding of body language, their absolute hate and his self loathing was predictable. I always thought that his reticence to 'talk' and express an opinion was due to his knowledge that he'd be unable to manage the anger once the bottle was opened, like a rabid animal. She began her hate as a result of having her character tied to a man who was so publicly emasculated; it set her on the course of revenge that I have no doubt she has expressed, time and time again, as a woman eviscerated by one she likely felt superior to. BTW, where is Anita?

Anita is above this pigsty. Her old testimony needs to be re-examined.

Even though Clarence Thomas is black in skin tone alone, doesn't he realize that his wife is organizing a group that is against the POTUS because President Obama shares the same skin tone as him?
11:14 PM on 03/16/2010
See there is YOUR problem. YOU look at skin color. WE look at obama and see a man who differs with us greatly because of POLITICS.

Evidently, YOU have a problem with his race. WE don't.

I look at Obama and I am reminded of people like:

Bertrand Russell
Abraham Lincoln
FDR
JFK
Mahatma Gandhi
Mikhail Gorbachev
Nelson Mandela
Charles Darwin
Marco Polo
Charles Barkley

If it didn't bother her to recruit Bush Administration staffers while her husband was hearing Bush v. Gore, then jumping into bed with the tea partiers and deep-pocketed corporate donors surely won't affect her. Seems she was pretty excited about the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. She is a huge Limbaugh and Beck fan which should tell you all you need to know about Virginia Thomas.

She certainly has the right to do whatever she wants.

However, it creates problems for him. If he is ethical he must now recuse himself from any case that her group is interested in. Given the recent political nature of the courts decisions, that is most cases. Her new job makes him ineffective as a result of the need to stay home, so he should just resign.

I can think of few things that would pleasure me more, intellectually speaking of course. I never liked the guy and thought Anita Hill was an extremely brave woman to come forward with what happened to her, only to have our congress basically call her a liar.

So Thomas rips up the constitution and allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on political groups, then his wife starts a political organization and announces she will take all the corporate contributions she can get. Conservatives want strict constructionist judges, except when they throw out all precedents to personally gain from their decisions (Bush vs Gore is another good example). And why would an African - American support the racist tea-party anyway? Incredible.
09:09 AM on 03/16/2010
Clarence probably doesn't attend State of the Union addresses because Obama has said he wouldn't have chosen him for such a position. He shouldn't have been chosen.

Read his bio, Clarence is a very complex man. He belongs on a therapist's couch. The damage done to him as a child by his mother and classmates made him who he is today. And the hate he carries around has severely aged him too.

No Mrs. Thomas, you are NOT an ordinary citizen. You are the wife of a Supreme Court Justice, thus making you, by extension, a public official. What happens when a Tea Party Group issue comes before the Supreme Court? Do you think your husband is going to recuse himself? I doubt it.

I love how disparaging labels are applied to the opposition, however, the very things you are claiming THEY do are the things YOU are doing. Activist judges? Check. Trying to take over the government? Check. Socialist Actions? Check? Looking more and more like 1939 Germany? Check.

Enough. Expose these people to the spotlight.

If he fails to recuse himself we then have grounds for impeachment.

Your argument means nothing until you scream about Justice Ginsburg's involvement with NOW.

Really, so Hillary should have sat at home while Bill was president?

Or maybe he should have recused himself from what he was doing because of his wife.

RECOGNIZING DECEPTIVE ARGUMENTS

The ability to distinguish between deceptive and logical reasoning is an essential skill in critically analyzing written and oral arguments. The danger of deceptive arguments comes from their misleading nature, which cause you to reject a valid opposing argument or embrace an argument that has little rational merit. Deceptive arguments often distract people from the vital issue and focus their attention on matters of little importance.”

First, I love it when folks always bring it back to Bill and Hillary. As far as I can remember, Hillary did not start a 501(c)4, with the stated goal to "undermine the president's hard-left agenda". President Clinton has done humanitarian work, which, if nothing else, enhances his wife's work. And, if I am not mistaken, the current President AND his predecessor (who really does not like President Clinton) asked him to do the work, and none of that work involves influencing Secretary Clinton's position on anything political.

Just as a point of clarification, if this were the Clintons, the Obamas, or any other Democratic political family and this issue came up, I would make the same argument that there is a conflict of interest. For example, the fact John Conyers has not stepped down from his charimanship of the House Judiciary Committee now that Monica Conyers, his wife, has been sentenced to jail for bribery is a shame. It looks bad, and my late mother always said "If it looks dirty, whether it is or not, clean it!"

This just looks dirty. And, as we all know, in Washington, appearance is everything.

I know a woman whose husband was a federal judge. She kept her maiden name so she could be involved in the community and not have her activities associated with his job. No one knew she was his wife unless they personally knew her.
How DARE Virginia Thomas be involved in a Tea Party!!! Her husband is a SC judge and she should have restraint against her inbred desires to disparage her huband's position.
Clarence Thomas is already the most complex man I've ever read about but for his wife to publicly participate in Tea Party's really cuts the rug. These people deserve each other.

How DARE Justice Gingsurg be on the payroll of NOW! She can not be partial when NOW has any involvement in ANY case that comes before the Supreme Court.

She has the right to do anything she wishes.

Clarence, however, must deal with this reality. It will be difficult for him to be an effective judge. He might think about resigning.
08:26 AM on 03/17/2010
SO you are ok with Justice Ginsburg getting paid by NOW. Do you require that she recuse herself from any case that NOW has any involvement with?
08:28 AM on 03/17/2010
I am not talking about a spouse.

I am stating the fact that ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES RUTH BADER GINSBURG frequently gets paid by NOW for speeches/lectures

Obvious conflict. I see you want to avoid answering this so you do not have to blatantly you have such a pathetic double standard.
