3,400-Year-Old Statues Unearthed In Egypt

Egypt

03/16/10 11:38 AM ET   AP

CAIRO — A team of archaeologists unearthed two large red granite statues in southern Egypt at the mortuary temple of one of the most powerful pharaohs, who ruled nearly 3,400 years ago, the Culture Ministry said Tuesday.

A ministry statement said the team discovered a 13 foot (4 meter) statue of Thoth, the ancient god of wisdom and the top part of a statue of Pharaoh Amenhotep III standing next to another god.

Both were found buried in the pharaoh's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile in the southern temple city of Luxor.

On Feb. 28, archaeologists discovered a massive red granite head of Amenhotep III at the same temple. The head, which is about the height of a person, is the best preserved sculpture of Amenhotep III's face found to date.

Amenhotep III, who was the grandfather of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, ruled from 1387-1348 B.C. at the height of Egypt's New Kingdom and presided over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.

The temple was largely destroyed, possibly by floods, and little remains of its walls. But archaeologists have been able to unearth a wealth of artifacts and statuary in the buried ruins, including two statues of Amenhotep made of black granite found in March 2009.

a friend emailed me this information:

""Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a colossal ancient statue of the pharaonic deity of wisdom, Thoth, in the shape of a baboon (..).
The four-metre (13-foot) tall statue was discovered in four pieces alongwith two statues while workers were lowering ground waters beneath Luxor to help preserve the city's pharaonic temples, the statement said. It dates back to the 18th Dynasty, which ruled Egypt until 1292 BC. "It is the first time that a statue of Thoth, depicting him as a monkey, of this magnitude has been discovered," Mansur Boraik, head of pharaonic antiquities in Luxor, told AFP.
The statues were discovered near the temple of Amenhotep III, who ruled until 1372 BC.
Another statue, of which only the upper half was found, depicted the king and the sky god Horus, represented as a falcon, antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said in the statement.
"The team also discovered an alabaster statue base that is expected to have been the base of one of Amenhotep III's statues," he said.

A granite statue of the pharaoh Ramses III, who ruled about 3,000 years ago, was also found. "

There are a whole lot of amazingly beautiful and fascinating artifacts from thousands of years ago. Our ancestors may not have had the technology that we have, but they sure knew how to capture beauty in their art and architecture.
These statues are said to be 3,400 years old. About 50 years ago, on Santorini, a Minoan town was unearthed with hot and cold water pipes going into some of the buildings, from over 3,600 years ago. Amazing. I assume that they used thermal springs for the hot water.

Did anybody else notice that the pic of the 3400 yr old statue (center column) looks a lot like the 130 Georgian lady one column right, 2 pix down?

Wow! I get goose bumps when I realize the world was only 2400 years old when this statue was made. If we keep digging, we probably will find something from the beginning of time.

Why? I like to see something from the beginning of time. If we should keep digging, eventually we will unearth the garden of Eden.

Musical instruments have been discovered that are over 100,000 years old - back when people were living in heaven, no doubt.

I saw the Ramses exhibit in 1987, I believe. It was truly amazing. Missed the Tut exhibit, much to my disgust.

The "guy" on the photo is actually a 21st Dynasty coffin-lid, possibly of a female. What exactly it does in a story about a 18 Dynasty pharaoh is beyond my knowledge. In any case, Egyptian royal art was canonic, means it didn't even resemble the people displayed. There were exceptions in Amarna and the Roman period though.

I FANNED YOU FOR YOUR EXPERT OPINION TO A FLIP COMMENT. Actually, I am a fan of Obama , and it was meant as no disrespect to the Egyptians or Obama. I am a big fan of the Ancient Egyptians also. They did some pretty advanced things in such early times.

That's not a guy, it's "Imesy", a noblewoman from the 21st dynasty.

Thoth was the measurer of the earth and the counter of the stars, the keeper and recorder of all knowledge.

That is one "archeological dig" that I would have loved to have been a part of. WOW!!!

What is happening in the world today - it all fits. The knowledge that was lost to us is making it's way back into our hearts and minds. Those of you who wish, please embrace it. There are many who do not want you too, to name one; the church.
