Medjugorje Virgin Mary Sighting: Vatican Investigates Visions In Bosnia

Medjugorje

NICOLE WINFIELD   03/17/10 12:12 PM ET   AP

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican has begun formally investigating reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Medjugorje shrine in southern Bosnia.

An international commission of inquiry headed by Italian Cardinal Camillo Ruini – a top adviser to the late Pope John Paul II – has been formed to study the case and report back to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican said in a statement Wednesday.

The Medjugorje apparition has been disputed since 1981, when six youths said they had regularly seen visions of the Virgin there. Unlike Fatima in Portugal or Lourdes in France, the Vatican has been cautious about calling the sightings authentic, and neither Rome nor the local diocese has formally approved Medjugorje as an official shrine site.

But the lack of official recognition hasn't stopped the remote village 70 miles (110 kilometers) southwest of Sarajevo from thriving. More than 30 million faithful have visited the area since 1981.

One of the highest-ranking recent pilgrims was Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, who visited over New Year's, sparking a minor diplomatic incident since official church pilgrimages to Medjugorje are barred.

Schoenborn stressed that he traveled to the shrine in a private capacity. But he celebrated Mass there, met with the visionaries and granted several interviews afterward in which he called for Medjugorje pilgrims to receive the pastoral care – both physical and spiritual – that they would need there.

He also called the shrine a tree that "bore many fruits," in terms of vocations, conversions and rediscovery of faith.

His comments prompted the local bishop of Mostar, Monsignor Ratko Peric, to write him a letter Jan. 2, sharply criticizing his visit and stressing that his presence there was by no means a formal recognition of the apparitions. The local church has cast doubt on the claims, in part because one of the visionaries says the apparitions have continued monthly for over a quarter century.

Schoenborn met with the pope on Jan. 15 and wrote to Peric saying he regretted "if you have the impression that my pilgrimage to Medjugorje did a disservice to peace. Rest assured this was not my intention."

The Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Vatican decided to launch the investigation based on a request from Bosnian bishops.

The current Vatican No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, wrote in 1996 that official pilgrimages to Medjugorje weren't to be organized at parish or diocesan levels since bishops from the former Yugoslavia had affirmed in 1991 that there was no way to confirm that "supernatural apparitions and revelations" had taken place.

The church is breaking out the P.R. machine. These apparitions are weapons of mass distraction.

I hope the Vatican's crack team of paranormal investigators can get to the bottom of these sightings. They should make a reality TV show out of this.

The RC church won't ever certify Medjugorje for two very good reasons; first, that apparition was asked 'Which is the one true church?" and she answered, "God doesn't recognize religions, only His children who love Him' and 2) she then pointed out a young Muslim girl in the village as the holiest person in the district.

Whoever this apparition is, she isn't "RC" friendly - but i really love her style! (And how she thinks.)

Why does the virgin Mary never appear amongst the unbelievers? Wouldn't she achieve more or is it too much like hard work?

Maybe she has but they just couldn't see her even if she did (human truth filters against inconvenient facts being as strong as they are). And I don't believe in "the virgin Mary", myself, but I do understand human nature. lol

maybe she does. we really don't know anything about the "before" of people who saw her--only the "after."

But she has this habit of only appearing in staunchly Catholic areas of the globe, anywhere where people might laugh at her, she steers clear off.

She's useless at prosleytising.

Suddenly the Vatican takes interest in this after 29 years? Couldn't be a distraction from those letters from the pope to his bishops to keep molestations of children by priests a secret, could it?

This could be real. I think God is real as a force of action. Yet if the signs are not helpful or urging them toward action, it may just be a personal imagination creation, such as seeing Jesus in the morning toast.

You can't be serious.

Delusion is real. Lies are real. Gullibility is real.

Yet you would believe that a ghost of a 2000 year old demi-god from a Middle-Eastern goat herding religion, traveled through the veil of the supernatural, breaking all of the physical Laws of the universe, just to appear before a select few peasants in the hills of Bosnia?
12:24 AM on 03/18/2010
Yes considering some mortal priests have gone to as much trouble to rape alter boys.

we do not know everything about " Laws" (why upper case "L"?) of the universe or what you've referred to as "the veil of the supernatural" or any of the rest of what you've referred to. People have had mystical experiences of this type as long as they've been around to have them. By no means are such experiences limited to Christians. We simply have no idea what the events at Medjugorje are or mean. But I was told some years ago by buddies who've been there that every evening at 7:55PM (I think that's the time--supposed to be the time the lady appears) the dogs and birds and other animals in the vicinity of the site of the "apparitions" go ape-sheit over something..

A friend of mine (a non-believer) escorted her aging mother a true believer) to Medjugorje back in the early 80's. She, herself, didn't see anything there but took a lot of photos. When she had the film developed, there were some mighty strange things in her snaps so she called the local diocese and told them about it. The church sent over a priest who examined the pictures and then asked for her negatives so they "could be certified as unaltered". She never saw them again and the diocese denies all knowledge of the incident.

My friend is a respected business woman (CEO of the company she founded in the 70's) and, more than the photographs, the reaction of the RC church has since made her into a believer. (And her sincere outrage over this incident - for years - has given great credence to her story for me, too.)

just a note to all that make jokes about Our Blessed Lady; when your number comes up and you meet Jesus. what will you say when He asks what did you say about My mother? what are you gonna say?

When "my number comes?"

Why can't I say it right now?

Sorry... I know why. It's because they are FAKE.

I never thought of that. Now I am scared to death! Does your fear always work this well?
08:26 PM on 03/17/2010
Wow, what are the odds this would come out today--right when I'm writing that chapter in my book about a Bosnian women who saw Mary. Cool.

What's even more of an oddity is the simultaneous revelations in Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Ireland, Brazil and around the globe of rape and other various and sundry abuses by priest of the Catholic church at just the moment the Pope decides to investigate this 30 year old "mystery."

So, let's not ridicule our Muslim brothers when one sentence in their Koran suggests that they will enjoy 72 virgins when Christians claim that Jesus' mother was a virgin. I'm a born again spiritual who was raised Catholic and do not believe in some parts of the heretic Bible which was used by men to control their women and children and to marginalize other religions. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shall not have any other God before me. What a crock! I doubt a humble Jesus would ever proclaim this.
01:46 AM on 03/18/2010
I, for one, do not ridicule the 72 virgins. I get a little sarcastic when people murder because that is a way to meet and enjoy those same virgins. I get really upset when they set their children off like fire crackers to meet virgins, because children are too young to meet virgins, or play war games. They need to play real games in the sandbox and bake sandpies. Now, about seeing things, Paul saw some visions, and I have a real problem with his visions, because he declared that the Law would no longer hold. If people see visions, and they proceed to improve themselves, become better human beings, that is something I believe in, even if it does not jive with my particular religion. If officials from a Church where atrocities are committed worldwide make decisions on what is and what is not, I do not take those decisions seriously. I see no need to ridicule people's faiths.
02:58 AM on 03/18/2010
That was a misprint in the Koran. It should read one 72 year old Virgin!
