Norrie May-Welby: The World's First Legally Genderless Person

Norrie Maywelby

UPDATE 3/19 -- 3:00 PM ET The Telegraph reports that Norrie May-Welby, who made headlines after recently receiving an official designation of gender neutrality in Australia, is now lodging a protest after the document was withdrawn this week over questions of whether the New South Wales registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages had the power to issue such a designation.

Norrie May-Welby has become the first person to be officially designated as gender 'not specified' - being neither a man nor a woman.

May-Welby, born a man 48 years ago in Scotland, became a woman at age 28 after a sex change operation in Australia. However, May-Welby did not feel comfortable as a woman and desired to become a 'neuter.'

Officials in New South Wales, Australia have now altered May-Welby's birth certificate to specify the neutral gender.

May-Welby has posted some thoughts about the reclassification on a blog:

If I need to show identity documents, I certainly don't want details that are false, for this will only cause trouble when officials realize I don't match my documents.

If my passport, for example, states that I am female, I may be detained when traveling if the local jurisdiction classes me based on the gender assigned at birth, or if my physically noticeable masculine aspects (for example, my Adam's apple, or my broad chest) are noticed.

If the passport states male, again there is a dissonance with my physical form, castration having had a feminizing effect, and I am usually moving and talking in a feminine manner.

May-Welby goes on to speak of being "grateful that at least the state of New South Wales is able to deal with me on such an adult basis."

A spokesperson for the UK's Gender Trust welcomed the classification: "Many people like the idea of being genderless."

I don't know whether to say "Bravo" or "Brava" but will say that Norrie rocks! The non-conformist does create challenges for him/herself and those nearby, but those challenges can be very good -- at least educational -- for all concerned. We may need new pronouns and linguistic gender structures in our European languages. (This would not be a problem in genderless languages like Persian, Chinese, or Japanese) but as I have a number of friends who are intersexed, transsexual and/or more gender-fluid I'd say adding a few simple words to our vocabulary is a small price to pay for our friends to live in a greater sense of personal integrity and acceptance.

I'm going to have a tail and big ears sewn on me. Then I will be a mouse.

What? It doesn't work like that? But....

We might be surpised as to how many "neuters" there are.
I look for this term to become more familiar in the future.

not just 'neuters'...
but intersexuals are more common than the general public knows anything about, for obvious reasons... they are stigmatized & shunned by society. hopefully, articles like this one will help bring some understanding and acceptance to those who don't identify as strictly 'male' or 'female'.

More power to you, Norrie. And all of you haters, don't you have something better to do with your time than getting your undies all tied up in a bundle about someone else's personal choice, which really has no effect on you whatsoever?

Wow, HP is pretty protective of this one. I just made a paralell to the female with 8 kids that was surgically done.

Nope - too racy I guess.

I was gonna say, she's a person and that's all that matters. And then I was going to change it to say, he's a person and that's all that matters. And then I realized it would be impolite and disrespectful to say, it's a person and that's all that matter. And then I realized neither my vocabulary nor our language has the word(s) to say what I want to say. But you catch my drift.

Following Octomom's lead...let's medically alter ourselves and cry to the media.
10:29 PM on 03/20/2010
Octomom's story wasn't released to the media by her, it was released by the hospital after she had her twins. If you're talking about her plastic surgery, she wasn't 'crying' to the media, she was showing off her new body.

Gender goes beyond biology. Our culture assigns a raft of characteristics to every person, based on the person's classification as male or female. Some people fit nicely into the box society puts them in, but many don't. Life would be much richer for everyone if each person were free to be and dress and act as that person chose, without risk of being criticized or made the subject of headlines, and without having to waste time and energy continually justifying any deviation from ill-fitting societal "norms."

Exactly!!! Gender is a complex combination of genetic hormonal and societal issues, it is not an either/or issue it is a continuum, as is sexuality. Many tribal peoples have a place of honor for these people \ recognizing that they may be embodiments of the duality of us all and therefore have something of value to teach us.
02:19 PM on 03/20/2010
Yeah, and some of them cut off women's genitals to prevent them from enjoying sex. The only thing tribal people have to teach us on this subject is that they discriminate against people for different reasons than we do. The idea that they are somehow morally superior to us is ridiculous and impossible to prove. They are no better or worse.

> Some people fit nicely into the box society puts them

I think your point is valid, but you don't have to look down upon those who enjoy their lifestyle, just as people who have just been put in a box by society.

People here are acting like gender identity is the most important thing in the world, yet the only problems that are being mentioned are pronoun and restroom...not much in the big picture.
03:51 PM on 03/19/2010
Well, and the issue of prison - where would you house people like this? Male prison or female prison?

Wouldn't a DNA test help?

I understand that there are "grey" areas regarding the "XX" and "XY" designations (such as an extra "X") but if Norrie falls, specifically, within either the clearly defined "XX" or "XY", shouldn't she be classified as either "male" or "female"? Of course, why we all have to be classified under a specific gender label is another question...
03:34 PM on 03/19/2010
that's not the point. she prefers it this way. the test would say she is a man since that what she was at birth.
03:56 PM on 03/19/2010
Ok, so genetically I am a Caucasion of Irish ancestry. But it I might 'prefer' to be called/labeled a Native American or African American in official documents. Even though I'm not genetically so, I should be permitted to change my official documents to say I am whatever I've chosen to be because I "prefer" it?
08:29 PM on 03/19/2010
Not necessarily, Marnieblue.

Even though her birth certificate may say she was born "male", a DNA test may reveal an additional X chromosome, making determination of gender more ambiguous.
08:37 PM on 03/19/2010
sex is biological, gender is social.
02:59 PM on 03/20/2010
And we get to the crux of this non-issue! It's sex is male, it's gender is neutral!

We should rejoice that the human race is changing to become more like one. We will be procreating for many a moon to come. So all you scaredy cats need not worry.

What will be will be long after you are beyond ashes or dirt, and without any gender to worry about.
