Maryland Trying To Secede From The South

Maryland South

BRIAN WITTE   03/19/10 12:04 PM ET   AP

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland's official song may include a line about "Northern scum" left over from the Civil War era, but the state isn't feeling so Southern anymore.

Though Marylanders live just south of the Mason-Dixon Line, their attitudes and even their accents straddle that border. These days, leaders feel they've got more in common with states to the north.

In one sign of the shift, lawmakers successfully petitioned to move from the Southern Region of the Council of State Governments to the Eastern Region, where they'll be able to trade ideas with fellow officials from Pennsylvania, New York, and other states they consider more like-minded.

"I just don't think we're as Southern as people used to think," said state Sen. Catherine Pugh, a Baltimore Democrat.

It's unusual for states to switch regions in the 77-year-old council, which provides a forum for state officials to share ideas. The last time was when Missouri switched from the Midwestern Region to the Southern Region in 1994.

Maryland supporters of the change cite the state's proximity to the District of Columbia, which is in the Eastern Region. They share many concerns, particularly in public safety and transportation.

Maryland also belongs to the same electrical power grid as several states in the Eastern Region and shares environmental interests in preserving the Chesapeake Bay with states there, although fellow bay state Virginia is in the Southern Region.

"I think that we have common experiences that we can learn from," said state Sen. Verna Jones, D-Baltimore.

Longtime residents note a shift too. Diane Schwallenberg, who has lived in the Annapolis area all of her 53 years, said she feels more Southern because of the state capital's laid-back waterside atmosphere and small-town friendliness. But she said she has noticed a change over the years as more people have moved to the area.

"Some of the new people that come in – not the real, true Annapolitans in particular – but people that have come in are kind of preppy and all," she said.

Maryland has long felt influences from both parts of the country. During the Civil War, the state was torn between North and South.

While Maryland was officially in the Union, President Abraham Lincoln had to send troops to occupy Baltimore to keep the state in line. Recent attempts to update the state song, "Maryland, My Maryland," – which describes the occupation as "the despot's heel upon thy shore" and includes the mention of "Northern scum" – have failed.

Robert Brugger, who wrote a history of the state titled "Maryland, A Middle Temperament," said Maryland's political interests and social makeup may link it more closely these days with Pennsylvania than Virginia. Still, he said many Maryland residents enjoy the cultural qualities that come from being a border state, and he expressed regret that some felt a change was needed.

"It is still too bad, in as much as Maryland really is North and South together," Brugger said. "It's a shame to have to choose."

But supporters of going Yankee mention Maryland's modern political differences with states in the South. In Maryland, a solid blue state, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 2-1.

"The South, which we have been a part of for more than 50 years, is a fabulous region, but the politics have changed dramatically, and much of the politics are dominated by tea party activists," said Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, a Democrat.

Having lived my entire 50 years in Maryland, I know the place well.

Maryland is a border state.

Historically, It was more a southern state in the past than it is now. It was a slave state; It's architecture was primarily southern as were it's political views and social customs. In the Civil War, Baltimore rioted against Northern troops passing through the city, yet the president of the B&O Railroad was a staunch Unionist. 'Maryland My Maryland' was a battle cry for southern troops. Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth was a Marylander as were three of his five conspirators (they were all hung). Southerners today who can't get over the Civil War need to learn their history when calling Maryland a Yankee State.

Due to its geographic proximity to the north and with improved transportation and communications, Maryland is much less southern today. The Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland are distinctly southern, while the metropolitan areas are quite northern.

To me it embellishes the best of both north and south. It lacks the hurried, aggressive pace of the north, yet it is educated and mostly devoid of the ignorance so prominent in the south. I love it that way......the best of both worlds.

Perhaps word that General Lee recently surrendered at Appomattox has not reached all of the Southern states yet.

Northern VA needs to become an independent state. We have nothing in common with the rest of this state!
Let the southern parts stay a part of the south.

I don't think anyone in Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, or Alabama would consider anyone from Maryland as being anything but a Yankee.

Agreed. Good riddance, and don't let the door hit on your way out!

A good portion of the inhabitants of southern New Jersey would be happy to make up for the shift in demographics anyway, complete with rebel flag.

Well, I watched all of the clips and you're right, much of it is seriously depressing and unnecessary. I did not cry but I could easily understand why some would. I don't want the money, though, because my good Democrats in our Congress are within a short couple of hours of fixing a good portion of America's health care nightmare..

Thanks to our Congressional Democrats, and SHAME on you, despicable Republicans!

Not sure how easy this may be...a lot of Southern Maryland folks still want to be part of a "southern region" , they look down on folks who live in Baltimore and other points north of DC. Politically, many many of them are Republican. I was just checking my Facebook page and many of my former high school classmates in So. Maryland are hoping for another Obama failure. They routinely post celebration post anytime the President cannot get something done, cheering their Republican lawmakers. They love their southern drawls and complain about those nasty liberal Yankees. The schools reinforce this attitude...when I was in high school, they gave everyone who attended Bush/Quayle inauguration an excused absence, even supplied the bus. This was not the case 4 years later with Clinton. Students who supported Reagan praised.

Where I come from is so far South that Mississippi is North. Being from South Louisiana, I came from a separate culture than those surrounding us (i.e. those north of I-10.) We are in the South, but we are not exactly "Southern." We are American, but we do not share the Protestant/Anglo experience. I can feel for the people of Maryland. They know what it is like to be defined in general terms while having to work within muliple political and socio-geographical boundries. I think their move is a correct one, though. Their position in the North-Eastern corridor demands they switch. I just hope they feel for us. We're jammed between the South and East Texas.

Tea Party = White Citizens Council

None of their "rage" is legit it's just hate and ignorance. No better proof is this gem, "Keep your hands off my Medicare", a government run program, the same government they HATE so much.

They paid into Medicare, without a choice, their whole working lives. They should demand their benefits. Now they are seeing a reduction in benefits. Their rage is justified.

I am amazed at how many bigots there are on here. Y'all are bigot's against a whole region of America. There are rednecks everywhere, doesn't Sara Palin prove that? You need to only look in your own back yard to find racism, it is everywhere. The worst race riots didn't even happen down here there were in Detroit and LA and during the Civil War blacks were lynched in NYC. Yeah, the winner writes the history and they tend not to mention that kind of thing when demonizing the South. You can act like all of our cities are run by a bunch of racist old farts but my deep South city has had a black mayor since the 1970's has yours?. So go on with your stereotyping rant about us Southerners but remember Michele Bachman ain't from her either and there are plenty of teabaggers up north too.

I realize that part of the bigot paradigm is putting down one kind of person in order to feel better about oneself and it sure looks like there's a lot of that going on on the blog. Shame on you!

Then tell us why all those grand politicians keep getting elected out of the south.
10:25 AM on 03/22/2010
For every "grand politician" down here you could find one else where in the states. Don't kid yourself. It also is hard for someone to vote for a person who has called them ignorant like Hilary Clinton did during her campaign for presidency. Like many places in the large cities you find more progressive thinking and in the rural areas less. Some states don't have very large urban areas.
The South is changing and calling all of us down here names and demonizing us does not help that change. Wouldn't it be better to recognized the good changes and not blanket all Southerners as racist, ignorant, KKK supporters? For example isn't it great that Virgina went for Obama?

They want to get as far from Virginia as possible, as it has been taken over by the criminal element within the GOP. The moment their new Gov Bob McDonnell got in to power, he changed the laws so gays can no longer be employed by the state, and more scary anti gay language.

Eerily in that Bob McDonnell's win was orchestrated by The Family, and they also orchestrated the kill the gays bill in Uganda, where a person could be killed simply because they were gay. Much up-cry here got them to tone this down some, but it is still outrageous, and far from "christian" which is what they proclaim themselves to be..

The good news is, one of The Family's own. Senator Ensign, is under criminal investigation for a matter that implicates the whole Repub party.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/news/john-ensign/

While it implicates all of them, in actuality, they have been taken over by this fringe group, The Family, whose action arm are the elected officials they have put in power, many of whom reside or did reside at C Street. If the GOP can out them, both with identity, and out of the party, they may be able to save themselves, and reclaim the title of GOP.

Stupak, by the way, is in The Family, but he denies it.

Good for Maryland. Having lived in the Commonwealth of VA on and off for several years I can't tell you how many times I've crossed into our neighboring state and felt a total energy shift (positive and progressive, of course). My friends in VA thought I was crazy for claiming such but good to know I've been vindicated!
