'Ramona And Beezus' Movie Hits Theaters In July (VIDEO)

"Ramona and Beezus," along with all of the other "Ramona" books by Beverly Cleary, remains somewhat sacred for many of those who loved the books as kids. So now that there's a movie adaptation coming out in July, starring Selena Gomez, Sandra Oh, and John Corbett, there are some mixed feelings afoot. Jezebel is not happy with Beezus's "sex kitten" look or the framing of Ramona as a "pint-sized manic pixie dream girl," and GalleyCat compares the movie to the recent Disney made-for-TV movie "Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars."

What do you think? Is it awesome that Cleary's beloved book is coming to the big screen, or is the movie destined to disappoint?

The Ramona books are from my daughter's generation, the 70s, but I loved reading them along with her. Ramona and Beezus and the rest of the characters were the most real kids I had ever encountered. From this little bit of trailer, I don't think I would like the movie. It looks like it adds too much fantasy to very realistic tales. I guess everything has to be spoiled by special effects these days to sell.

Naschkatze, they did it on purpose so they can put it into 3D or Imax 3D and charge extra.

I was born in the early 80s and was introduced to the Ramona books in the 3rd grade and LOVED them ever since. I had no idea they were books from the 70s until I started to learn about the publication page of books lol. They tried to make a Saturday morning kids show out of Ramona the Pest and Fudgilicious (sp?). Remember those books? Either way, I'm not going to the movies and my nieces and nephews don't even know the books.

Well my daughter was born in '71, and I know she was reading them in 2nd grade. That puts the earlier ones at least in the late '70s. Maybe you should get the books for your nieces and nephews and skip the movie.

I'm from the 70s as well, and I remember reading them as a young girl and absolutely loving them. After watching the trailer here, I definitely won't be going to see the movie. Just that quick peek assured me the books are far better.

Jezebel has problems. The Ramona in this trailer IS the Ramona of the books (who I admit could be described as a manic pixie dream girl). And Beezus is a sex kitten? Please! Shes a teenager who doesn't look frumpy or nerdy; that's all.
