Tea Party Protests: 'Ni**er,' 'Fa**ot' Shouted At Members Of Congress

First Posted: 03-20-10 04:56 PM   |   Updated: 03-20-10 09:00 PM

Abusive, derogatory and even racist behavior directed at House Democrats by Tea Party protesters on Saturday left several lawmakers in shock.

Preceding the president's speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "faggot," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn said, in response to a question from the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."

"It doesn't make me nervous as all," the congressman said, when asked how the mob-like atmosphere made him feel. "In fact, as I said to one heckler, I am the hardest person in the world to intimidate, so they better go somewhere else."

Asked if he wanted an apology from the group of Republican lawmakers who had addressed the crowd and, in many ways, played on their worst fears of health care legislation, the Democratic Party, and the president, Clyburn replied:

"A lot of us have been saying for a long time that much of this, much of this is not about health care a all. And I think a lot of those people today demonstrated that this is not about health care... it is about trying to extend a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."

UPDATE 6:55 PM ET: Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's office released the following statement:

For many of the members of the CBC, like John Lewis and Emanuel Cleaver who worked in the civil rights movement, and for Mr. Frank who has struggled in the cause of equality, this is not the first time they have been spit on during turbulent times.

This afternoon, the Congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The Congressman would like to thank the US Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the others Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care. After all the Members were safe, a full report was taken and the matter was handled by the US Capitol Police. The man who spat on the Congressman was arrested, but the Congressman has chosen not to press charges. He has left the matter with the Capitol Police.

This is not the first time the Congressman has been called the "n" word and certainly not the worst assault he has endured in his years fighting for equal rights for all Americans. That being said, he is disappointed that in the 21st century our national discourse has devolved to the point of name calling and spitting. He looks forward to taking a historic vote on health care reform legislation tomorrow, for the residents of the Fifth District of Missouri and for all Americans. He believes deeply that tomorrow's vote is, in fact, a vote for equality and to secure health care as a right for all. Our nation has a history of struggling each time we expand rights. Today's protests are no different, but the Congressman believes this is worth fighting for.

UPDATE 7:48 PM ET: The Buffalo News reports that Rep. Louise Slaughter's district office in Pine View, New York, was vandalized on Saturday.

Sometime early this morning, someone threw a brick through the front window of her Pine Avenue office.

The damage was discovered about 12:30 a.m., city police said.

The brick put a hole in the outer-most window at the office at 1910 Pine Ave., but did not damage a second interior window, police reported. A piece of broken brick believed to have caused the damage was found at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $350.

UPDATE 8:57 PM ET: The Associated Press reports that Capitol Police arrested the man who spit on Cleaver, but the Congressman won't press charges.

Someone made a movie, a comedy about killing George W. Bush who was at the time the sitting president of this country........lets stop pretending its just Republicans who are inappropriate. The hypocrites are all over the place on both sides.

The left/right, what a joke.
shedmyskin   05:23 PM on 4/14/2010
where is the proof this happened? If anything, its been proven this is false.....The democrat system hacks have sent in people to act as racists.....doesnt matter the tea party has been taken over by the republican system hacks as well.

god forbid there is real voter rebellion in this country...the sheep just move on

It's pretty simple.... the left doesn't like the message so they are trying to silence the messenger... the thing is folks are smart.. they can see through such absurd accusations. I was at the rally in Washington, DC a few weeks ago... I saw ZERO, ZERO, ZERO evidence of racism and that charge of folks making racial slurs or homophobic slurs... Didn't happen.. purely fabricated to slander the tea party movement. America is not that dumb.
jsmappy   05:51 PM on 4/06/2010
Exactly!!! This is a prime example of the reporting we get nowadays. The media in the country are TOLD what to write because they no NOTHING about sourcing. Nothing about investigative journalism. Nothing about the free press. They are ADMITTEDLY manipulated by the Obama administration. THE PRESS is part of the Washington Corruption!

I saw the video and the amount of people there. There is NO way you could have heard or seen everything that was going on there. In fact I saw a video of them yelling at eachother and you couldn't hear what they were saying. And yet with your I guess bionic eye and ear you heard and saw everything that was going on? I have been to many rallies and I know for A FACT you can't possibly tell me what was going on in the entire rally.

Did anyone notice that Emanuel Cleaver didn't wipe any of the "spit" off himself?

No I see a video where he very clearly wipes it off walking up the steps.

Waiting for the rebuttal of this story. Emanual Cleaver cleverly did not mention any incident occured, yet didn't deny it. Great way to not really lie. The video of Cleaver being spat upon is pretty clear that he wasn't, or at least not purposely. The man who allegedly did the spitting was clearly yealling and was yelling long before Cleaver showed up. If there really was any of this name calling, where is the proof? I mean nearly everyone has a phone with video now, why hasn't any of this shown up on youtube? Oh you will find some videos on there "claiming" to be proof, yet there is NOTHING there. If you find one, read the quotes while listening...many are pissed that they were duped into thinking there was proof. I am not a Tea partier, yet I HATE seeing lies spout about about any group when there is clearly no proof.

Whiskeyman09   11:29 PM on 4/06/2010
Of COURSE it's absolutely true that Cleaver was spit on...Lewis was called the N-word...and Barney Frank was called the 'other F-word'! It's true because these honorable Congressmen said it was true and the media reported it. If you don't believe it ask any of the personalities on MSNBC and they will tell you it's true.

Just because the only video evidence of Cleaver getting spit on shows the old guy in the hat was yelling before, during and after Cleaver walked by--and Cleaver didn't wipe anything off of him or tell the officer escorting him to arrest the guy or punch the "spitter" in the face which most everyone would have done if someone spit in their face, does NOT mean that he wasn't spit on! He was ! If you don't believe it you can ask Ed Schultz! Here are links to a better angle actually showing him being spit on, and different links that PROVE that Lewis and Frank were called these horrible names. Wait...there really aren't any videos that show that. Must have been the fact that the healthcare debate was hardly covered by the media. But I know it must be true.
shedmyskin   05:25 PM on 4/14/2010
LOL because politicians and the media never lie....you can't find a bigger pack of liars than the politicians and their media dogs on both sides.

There is little proof of anything if everything has to be caught on tape. Are you serious? Just watching the tapes you're telling me you can hear everything everyone was saying and you definitely didn't hear the N-word? I have almost perfect hearing and I couldn't hear anything that was being said. I saw them yelling and yet couldn't hear what they were saying to eachother. Should someone have had their phone on the entire time? Just incase something was said. My father is a tea partier so I know very well what goes on at them.
elamz   11:36 AM on 3/31/2010
I come from a really big family in Pennsylvania. Some of them are now involved in the tea party. All of the family members in the tea party are super bigots--two are former KKK members. Is this just a coincidence? Uhhhhh...I don't think so.
drew88088   10:17 AM on 4/14/2010
so each of your family members not in the tea party are not bigots? isn't WV Robert Byrd also a former clan member? and he is a democrate? is this a conincidence??

i am from pennsylvania too. obviously you are a product of public education...what a clueless argument you make. move to maine idiot!

Does anyone still believe that we live in a post-racial America? No, racism is alive and well...people just do a better job of hiding it now. That is until push comes to shove and they just can't turn down a chance to display how hateful they are.
Mortoch   09:32 AM on 3/31/2010
About a month ago I found out the hard way that racism is definitely a two way street. We went to a gathering in the Detroit area and stayed at a hotel there. I am white and have never been a racist. Spent 4 years in the Marines where I had as many black friends as white and I have black friends now.
But in this hotel you would think I was wearing a white dunce hood and carrying a burning cross. Racism is terrible, when a person is ready to hate and even kill another person because of their color, that is a crime against humankind PERIOD. There is no acceptable reason to judge another person by anything other than their actions, when we do otherwise the whole of humanity loses another notch on the evolutionary scale. It breeds the type of lunatics that populate the news almost every day of our lives. People wounder about alien races and if they exist why they haven't shown themselves. Would you introduce yourself to someone who acts as we do? I would not. But we are so terribly proud of ourselves as a species aren't we?

One of the unbelievable aspects of this sordid business is that I've read a few columnists/bloggers and people commenting on their pieces that the Democrats made up all of it out of thin air -- i.e., that the people claiming to have been targets are lying.

A Republican claimed he had been targeted (and he was, media reports say, citing police reports) in a similar action -- but I didn't hear of anyone to the right saying *he's* a liar. (I don't think he's lying about it at all; in any event, were he to lie I wouldn't attribute it to his party affiliation.)

As far as I know, none of the sympathizers whom I've met -- but, happily, really don't know, not even their names in some cases -- with the Tea Party (some of whom are also fans of luminaries such as Limbaugh, Beck, & Co.) are active in it, but if their (the people's I know) racial attitudes are indicative of broad strands of thought and feeling in that movement -- hope they aren't -- then perhaps racists are dominating that group's discussion
It's also troubling that the Republicans haven't exactly rushed to the ramparts to denounce this behavior.

Me? A white guy, nearly 59, raised on a small ranch in Texas -- right outside a tiny town where everyone was white. (No "people of color.") And I tend to vote Republican -- or I used to; that may change now. So, no East Coast, limp-wristed elitist

You know what I think is funny is that most non political types think this story is the true bunk it is.
http://biggovernment.com/abreitbart/2010/03/25/2010-a-race-odyssey-disproving-a-negative-for-cash-prizes-or-how-the-civil-rights-movement-jumped-the-shark/

What is really funny is right in the front row of protesters is something that the left would have you think would never be a tea party member,,, wait for it,,,, wait for it,,, an African-american woman (a very pretty African-american woman I might add) Wow maybe she was the one who yelled the word that no one caught on tape. Not even the guy Nancy and friends had fallowing them taping it with his little cellphone video was able to catch anything other then kill the bill being shouted. Now unless bill is code for African-american I think you people on the left should spend less time fallowing these clowns and more time learning what is really going on in the world. BTW What's the name of that snake oil salesman who was fallowing this group recording it with his cell phone? I could be wrong but he looked a lot like old Jessi J Jr,,, Gee I wonder why they would have him bringing up Nancie's rear?

Now if the only proof of racism in all the videos taken is the left claiming racism who are the real racists here?

Um are you talking about that black girl who is in the front row quietly taking pictures of the men? The one without a sign? Who isn't yelling but seems to be glad she's in the front row to take a picture? You seem to be another one of those people who has bionic ears. Lots of conservatives watching this video are getting them it seems! They're all the rage! I can't make out a single word anyone is saying from the videos I've seen. Except the "Kill the bill" chanting that is requiring lots of people saying it at once. I do hear and see people saying other things I just can't make them out. I've never been to a rally where you could make out what individuals who aren't standing right next to you are saying. Gotta get me one of those bionic ears!

Are you really comparing books, movies and phone calls to spitting on a person? And FYI Bush started a war that the people against him think is wrong. they disagree with a plicy that they believed was pointless and cost countless lives.

Obama started a health care bill you don't like. Oh yeah I can see how you could easily compare the two!

I just do not understand all the negative energy with the Tea parties. Yes we are in debt but we can come out of it easily. Thank god for this bill. I hope they can add for changes like insurance coverage for unconventional operations...
Mortoch   07:44 AM on 3/27/2010
I believe the negative energy comes from a year and a half or more of watching Wall Street and Corporate America asinine policies finally come crashing in on them only to be bailed out with the money that those of us who actually work paid in as taxes. Then to add an kick to the tenders they turned around and handed out bonus's like they were candy at a fourth of July parade and acted surprised when tax payers got angry. And please do not fool yourselves that the bailout would not have happened if the other party had won the election. As i have stated before there are no longer political parties in this country, only hogs lining up at the taxpayers troughs for their share.
hdx2   10:48 PM on 4/02/2010
It's more than just being in debt. It's bigger government which means more control and fewer liberties. The federal government's primary role is foreign affairs, protecting our borders, printing the currency and running the post office. It seems they are running much more than that. What is not mentioned in the Constitution as far as federal powers goes to the states. The government is trying to dictate to the states how much taxes to collect for health care and how to spend it. I would say that is probably unconstitutional. I don't know about you but I don't need the government to tell me what is acceptable to buy or how to live. I do claim personal responsibilty for my life. I work, pay taxes, follow our laws except for driving about 5 MPH over the speed limit on occassion. Contrary to this government, I actually can make decisions for myself and reap the rewards of my decisions or suffer the consequences. Wow, what a concept.

The U.S gives inspiration to the Saudis & the rest of the GANG who are merely doing the happy dance because "corporatism" and their Machiavelli styled fellow Euro princes (aka U.S staged elected leaders) have put on the hypnotizing music in poli-tricks (i mean politics) and indeed have brainwashed MANY into embracing poisons like bailouts, wars, a health care gestapo & a lobbyist avatar brown puppet in the white house. Meanwhile their games have reduced many others to confusion or indifference. Grab some popcorn…Its a stage show!

My position is this: I understand that most Tea Party protestors would not condone these acts. But I can't help but notice their apparent indifference. So many overtly racist signs, and gestures, yet not one of these so-called "responsible" Tea Partiers, or their leaders even bothered to take a positive and uncompromising stand against such extremism and bigotry, by telling these people they were bringing discredit upon their movement and telling them to leave. Sure the leaders publicly "condemn" these acts by saying in front of the cameras that they were wrong and disgusting, yet they allow people like this to continue to attend their rallies and behave this way. So to me the Tea Party leaders' condemnations of these "few bad apples" are nothing but empty words. All I see is either condonement or indifference, and both mindsets are equally dangerous. In the South during the Civil Rights Movement, most Southerners were not KKK members, but they were sympathetic to their beliefs, and that is why bigotry flourished in that time. I see the same poison in this group.
Mortoch   07:36 AM on 3/27/2010
All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. Quote by either Edmund Burke or Thomas Paine depending on who you wish to believe but none the less says it all.
Millering   01:52 PM on 3/28/2010
HERE HERE!! Excellent quote for this topic.

I think what we will see in the next months is many of the equally as stunned "good" republicans step back and away from these tea partiers.... the tea partiers will attract more of the same type of people... and come election time...voila! Dem's win again.
After that, I am hoping some sanity will come to whatever Republican leadership is left and we can all get back to the business of running this country with a much kinder voice.
hdx2   11:39 PM on 4/02/2010
And how many times have you seen the far left actually commit violence and not one word heard from the left about it......It appears there is a double standard here. Clean your own house before you talk about how dirty someone else's house is.

I think we all know that you on the right are the kings of the double standard so please stop!

And what acts are you talking about? Because I have heard of out there groups that the right claims are democrats but never heard of an actual liberal condoning it. While on the other hand I know many Republicans (my father included- a long time Republican voter) who have started lining themselves up with the Tea Partiers. So there is zero doubt in my mind that its not just a few crazy independent people but many republicans. Rather than condemn them they have tried to down play it.
