Obama On Health Care Passage: 'This Is What Change Looks Like' (VIDEO)

AP/Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/22/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:55 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Capping a long day and a consuming political journey, President Barack Obama celebrated the passage of health care legislation with hugs, high fives and an emboldened attitude. Said the president to the nation, "Tonight, we answered the call of history."

At nearly midnight in Washington, with a big swath of country asleep or headed that way, Obama strode into the ornate East Room withVice President Joe Biden backing him. There was no hour too late for the president to embrace this moment.

"I want to thank every member of Congress who stood up tonight with courage and conviction to make health care reform a reality," Obama said as the top members of his own health care team stood beaming nearby. "I know this wasn't an easy vote for a lot of people. But it was the right vote."

Obama was proud but not unrestrained in victory, mindful that the Senate still has not gotten to a companion bill to fix problems with the one that just passed. The sense in the West Wing was one of perseverance after a debate with so many turns and doubts.

"We did not fear our future," Obama said. "We shaped it."

The final day had been a low-key one for Obama. No more fiery speeches, no trips to Capitol Hill, no ventures outside the White Housegates at all.
Instead, the most visible spokesman for health care reform spent the final day of an exhaustive lobbying campaign out of public view.

Aides said he was roaming the West Wing, getting updates, calling lawmakers with thanks as a huge legislative win was imminent.

As the president said when he crashed a morning meeting of senior staff, this was a big day. But the spotlight fell on the House of Representatives.

The first glimpse of the president on Sunday did not come until late at night, after the final House vote on legislation to revamp health insurance rules for millions of people. But the announcement that he would give such a statement underscored that Obama was sensing victory -- and history.

Beforehand, the White House released two photos showing hand-picked images of a president in a serious fight for votes until the end.

In one, Obama was on a cell phone talking to an unidentified lawmaker from the office of his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. The president was surrounded by Emanuel and four other legislative and political advisers. There wasn't a smile in the room.

The other photo showed Obama in the Oval Office, sleeves rolled up, working the phones again in conversation with another unnamed lawmaker.
Obama called more than a dozen lawmakers on Sunday and got in touch with more than 90 during the week, the White House said without identifying them.

Before nightfall, the only burst of Obama news came in a press release around 4 p.m.

Obama revealed he would issue an executive order to make sure that the emerging health care legislationwould uphold all federal funding restrictions on abortion. That step had the enormously important effect of locking in the votes of a bloc of anti-abortion House Democrats.

After that, around the White House, it was mostly a matter of counting down until the House acted.

Obama watched the main House vote on the Senate-approved health care bill in the Roosevelt Room with Biden and about 40 other members of the White House staff. When the bill won enough votes to pass, the room burst into applause and hugs.

Had this been any other spring day in Washington, Obama might have ventured out for basketball or golf.

Not on this Sunday, when no hint of taking the vote for granted would be allowed.

However, Obama did have time, like many Americans, to absorb the reality of his own busted March Madness bracket.

The president picked Kansas to win the men's NCAA basketball title; the Jayhawks fell in a big upset on Saturday. The basketball tournament continued Sunday, when some TVs in the West Wing were tuned to the games and other carried the action on the House floor.
Obama caught some of both.

Thanks to HP for linking me to a health care "calculator". I just ran an experiment.

I got to thinking...what's the cutoff point for being forced to spend 3 grand a year on health insurance whether you want to or not, and not getting any sort of government handoff to do it?

$43,321.

If you make $43,321 or more and don't have health insurance, you will be forced to buy  Read More...

Love the two pictures on the front page of HuffPo right now - shows exactly the difference between those who support the healthcare bill and those who don't.

those who do are well informed, supporting positive change that will help the American people, reduce the deficit and still let the insurance companies thrive (free market lives!).

those who oppose it are misinformed and fear mongering w/ bogus arguments (and sometimes racist).

I'm LOVING it!! I sat with my fingers crossed during each vote last night. I'm just thrilled that I will finally be able to afford to pay my employees decent wages AND give them health care - not either/or.

Amazingily, the sun did rise today!

When millions of Americans have health care in a few years when they couldn't afford it now or were denied, when premiums go down and coverage is more reliable, when your personal taxes don't soar due to covering healthcare, when your gov't doesn't kill your Grandma, pay for abortions or determine what your doctor prescribes... then maybe you'll figure out what a ride the republicans have taken you on.

Thank you Obama and Democrats for this good start at universal healthcare.
12:17 AM on 03/23/2010
The Republicans will retake Congress in November, the American people will vote Obama out in 2012, and this piece of excrement will be repealed.

if THIS is what change looks like, then I must have misunderstood. Fight for special interest and then come out with your chin all jutted out like you actually did something good for the american people.

wait till 8% of pay comes out of checks by law, or 2.5% penalty, THEN we'll see what people think.
06:47 PM on 03/22/2010
No kidding, right? So many Americans don't check the facts or ask basic questions. Firedoglake had a great chart on the "reform" we can all look forward to:

http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2010/03/19/fact-sheet-the-truth-about-the-health-care-bill

Excerpts:

Bill is almost identical to the plan written by the insurance company trade association, in 2009. The original Senate bill was authored by a former Wellpoint VP.

Since Congress released the first of its health care bills, health care stocks have risen 28.35%.

The bill will impose a financial hardship on middle class Americans who will be forced to buy a product that they can’t afford to use:

A family of 4 making $66,370 will be forced to pay $5,243 per year for insurance. After basic necessities, this leaves them with $8,307 in discretionary income — out of which they would have to cover clothing, other debt, child care & education, in addition to $5,882 in annual out-of-pocket medical expenses.

The bill is neither universal health care nor universal health insurance:
CBO:
* Total uninsured in 2019 w/Senate bill: 24 mil

Excise tax will result in employers switching to plans with higher co-pays and fewer covered services.

This bill does not bring down costs and leaves out nearly every key cost control measure, including:

* Public Option
* Medicare buy-in
* Drug reimportation
* Medicare drug price negotiation

Older...employees ...will be forced to pay much more in out-of-pocket expenses.”

What a bunch of bs. The new bill includes price guaging regulations to control premiums, and provisions for those who cannot afford premiums to have subsidies.

There are many new regulations that stop pre-existing conditions denials, stop people from being dropped when they get sick and control other unethical practices by the insurance companies. This was no corporate welfare bill.

KILL THE FEAR!

7% comes out for Social Security and Medicare now. I say add another 3 or 4 percent and just give Medicare for all. Where is this 8% you speak of? Most have 3 or 4 percent, if not more, coming out for employer provided health care. I work for a railroad and between taxes, medicare, railroad retirement , and my benifits, I have about 25% come out of my pay.

Also, god forbid you end up with something catostrophic like cancer. I think you will be happy that you won't have a life time cap. Besides the costs, there is so much good in this bill in the way of reforms.

for the uninsured it will be 8%, finally someone in the news mentioned it today, the day after the bill passes. It's shameful that the media has REFUSED to bring up this important point.

What's so hard about giving this bill a try? Its chief objectives are to bring down costs of health insurance to make it affordable for those who don't have it and to reduce health insurance costs in order to substantially reduce the federal deficit. I fail to see why these objectives garnish so much wrath and naysaying, except that some of us are by nature wrathful and naysayers no matter the legislation.

The insurance exchanges that will be available to the self-employed or unemployed -- who have no insurance at present -- are a welcomed and very much needed health insurance option. And I'm sure this option will greatly encourage entrepreneurship among those who've been previously hesitant because of their inability to afford health insurance if self-employed. So this option may indeed help business development.

And enough of blaming the govt for inferior this or that. American people are govt employees or govt contractors, including doctors and other medical staff paid through Medicare, Medicaid and any other govt insurance or system. If the govt is ineffective,then take a look at your family, neighbors, church members and folks in your car pool or those you sit next to at sporting events, etc, etc. Many of them are govt employees and responsible for the quality of service in govt agencies, hospitals, clinics or via govt contracts/insurance compensation. If you want to point fingers at the govt, that's where you point them or even at yourself if the shoe fits.

The wingnuts were all worked up over the ONE person who came from Canada to the US, like the US should base health care on one and only one person. Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes, and Fox should have had the Canadian doctor visible, in front of a camera and a microphone this past weekend, instead of the usual bloviators. My question is how many Canadians have heart procedures in Canada and are satisfied with the outcome?

The question should be... how is our healthcare reform going to somehow make us a single-payer system like Canada?

It isn't even close! This is just another fear-mongering tactic that's not based in any fact, just like the false abortion funding claim. They are trying to scare people into fighting this bill by making them think it will do what it won't.

This is change all right. The government now runs our health care, our banks, our car companies. It is called socialism. The de-incentive program. It would be nice if the elite were footing the bill. But, no, this will eliminate the middle class. Ask a Russian.

The euphoria over achieving health care insurance reform is well-deserved. This legislation is indeed historic and there are some excellent provisions that will go into effect immediately that should bode well for the Democrats in November. But all of you know that the Rethuglicans are going to make a big deal out of the mandate and there are very legitimate concerns about this by very good people that are afraid or upset at this aspect of the bill. Therefore, all of us, all of the progressive organizations, all of the progressive congressmen and senators that want the PUBLIC OPTION need to step up our game after a few days of celebrating. The next battle: PASS A PUBLIC OPTION INTO LAW. People will see that this is fair, even if they're not crazy about the mandate. The mandate is necessary to bring more people into the pool. The good news is that the mandate doesn't go into effect until 2014. Let's work really hard to elect progressive congressmen and senators so that we can realistically get this done. Everyone - keep up the pressure. Don't let up. Ever Ever Ever.
