Rosie O'Donnell: New Show To Be About 'Laughter And Love,' Not Politics

Rosie Odonnell

DAVID BAUDER   03/23/10 04:55 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — Rosie O'Donnell plans an "uplifting" new television talk show for launch next year that aims squarely at the audience Oprah Winfrey is leaving behind when her show ends.

O'Donnell won six Daytime Emmys in six years as host of an entertainment-oriented talk show that ended in 2002, but is planning something different this time – a single-topic aspirational show that sounds much like what Winfrey is doing right now.

Her success depends on convincing viewers that she's not the polarizing figure she's often seemed in the ensuing years, whether she can set up distribution outside of the traditional studio system and getting television executives to bet on something new at a time they're struggling for money.

"I would like this show to make a difference in people's lives, to be real, uplifting, authentic and focus on life, love and laughter," O'Donnell, 48, said.

Scott Carlin and Dick Robertson, two former Warner Bros. syndication executives who helped launch O'Donnell's first show, said they approached her about getting back into daytime TV shortly after Winfrey's announcement. The three of them are setting up their own company to produce and distribute the show, instead of getting together with a larger studio.

O'Donnell said she wanted to "build on what Oprah began and excelled at for 25 years, in my own style and with new adaptations and ideas."

To describe the program, the executives said one idea would be to invite Sandra Bullock on at the time of "The Blind Side" movie release and use it as a starting point to talk about the foster care system. O'Donnell told "Entertainment Tonight" that, as a mother of teenagers, she could do a show about how to care for them.

By the description, it seems O'Donnell is looking to distinguish herself from Ellen DeGeneres, whose lighter, more entertainment-oriented show is widely considered the most likely beneficiary of Winfrey's absence.

"It's not clear to me what a single-topic show – life, laughter, love? – really is," said Bill Carroll, an expert on the syndication market for Katz Television. "Is she attempting to do Oprah? And I don't know how Rosie doing Oprah would work."

While O'Donnell's first show was wildly popular at first, its ratings dropped by 47 percent by its last year. Her controversial year on "The View," and willingness to speak her mind politically, turned off some viewers and television executives, and may give her a handicap to overcome.

Carlin and Robertson noted the show is not political. She was hired by "The View" to be outspoken, Robertson said.

"This is not a woman shouting from mountaintops," Carlin said. "She's among the people."

Some television stations have already made plans for the hour Winfrey is leaving, with expansion of local news a popular – and cheap – option. Carroll said O'Donnell may have to settle for different time periods in order to prove herself again.

Setting up their own company offers Carlin, Robertson and O'Donnell some independence to make the show they want, but may be a handicap when they're trying to sign up stations to air it in more than 200 markets, Carroll said. But Carlin noted that consolidation in the business – station groups owning several stations in different markets – makes the sales job easier.

"In many ways I am more equipped and prepared to do this show than my last one," O'Donnell said. "I've evolved and grown and learned a lot about myself over the last eight years."

Here's an even better idea for Rosie.

She should play Meg Whitman on "Saturday Night Live"

I liked the Rosie talk show of many years ago, and couldn't understand why she left at the time. Rosie would have to keep it funny and friendly, a la "Ellen," if she wants to attract and retain an audience. I like Rosie and she can be amusing, but she's extremely unappealing when she gets preachy and displays anger. That side of her personality can be very off-putting, even if you agree with her position.

I can't see how their can be any fresh air around this woman. She sucks the air out of everyone around her, suffocating all who are near.

Rosie, seriously this guy has a better chance of winning the lottery. I want a few things to but I can recognize some of my limitations but this fella is clearly delusional.

This is what is wrong with the media this article has twisted her words around to make it sound like Rosie said she wanted to replace Oprah. She said in her own words " no one could ever replace Oprah she is irreplaceable..Lord I couldn't or ever want to even try.. it would be impossible."
What she said is she would like to try to do one on one interviews for the whole hr. something she admired that Oprah has done. She said when Oprah leaves there will be a void in afternoon viewing
She never said she what you are implying..Damn get it together..you, the media turns everything around for sensationalism.

True, she didn't say she wanted to replace her, she said she wanted to build on what Oprah had started in term of doing an uplifting show that changes lives.

An 'uplifitng show'! From Rosie O'Donnell no less. And, she wants to be the new Oprah. Well, she's big enough NOW to be confused for Oprah. And I don't mean in TV clout and stature!

Rosie should stay away from politics. While more often than not I agree with her, she has this way of making me feel bad about it.

she did for six years on her old show. She was only political on The View because that is what they hired her for ... to discuss her VIEWS.

No, she ambushed Tom Selleck as head of NRA on her show; not on the View.

Rosie is a strong black woman. :-)

I'm not much for either one but if Rosie thinks she can replace Oprah she needs to study up on how to be less vulgar and a little more classier.
02:56 PM on 03/24/2010
I used to love Rosie but now a million dollars could not make me watch anything she is on. She has become one hateful, miserable woman. Although, I'm no longer a big fan of Oprah's, Rosie could never replace someone as classy as Oprah is.

............it will be OK for a while....then gradually the politics will creep in .....then her 'all gay,all the time' agenda will surface and after a while people will tire of it....the ratings will fall off and she will 'retire' again.

Rosie, when you are as rich as oprah can I have a million dollars?
06:28 AM on 03/24/2010
i'm sure she will, she just wants to be "rich," not "rich-rich." not long ago she pointed out her neighbors in Greenwich, Conn., “have too much money" ...just her neighbors, apparently, not her. money magazine ranked Greenwich #1 in the "Biggest Earner" category.

She gives away millions every year. She and her children are set for ilfe. She doesn't do what she does for money.
09:01 AM on 03/24/2010
I think she's a great talent, but she'll never be anywhere near as rich as Oprah. She'd have to deliver mango sized block buster ratings year after year and negotioate ownership of the show so that the money goes to her & not some corporate boss.

Truthers make for great TV. Rosie should do a series of shows about the 911 attacks and just go for it. Now that would be fun, IMO.

She certainly has the over-inflated ego for it....

I am not a huge fan, but remember this.

Rosie, like Oprah, had her own successful magazine with a huge following, that only stopped when she didn't want to do it any more. There was a big todo as the publisher wanted her to continue as they were making money as other magazines folded.

So don't underestimate her abilities.
