Ryan Leaf Plea Deal: Eight Guilty Pleas Expected

Ryan Leaf Plea Deal

BETSY BLANEY   03/25/10 01:55 PM ET   AP

LUBBOCK, Texas — Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has agreed to plead guilty in his Texas drug and burglary case in exchange for 10 years of probation, attorneys in the case said Thursday.

Leaf's attorney, Bill Kelly, said his client has agreed to plead guilty to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance. Leaf would be on probation for 10 years and a burglary charge would be dropped.

A judge must approve the deal, which includes Leaf paying a $20,000 fine, Kelly said.

Leaf, who is living in Canada, was a star at Washington State but a bust during his four-year NFL career. He coached quarterbacks at West Texas A&M in Canyon, where the indictment was returned last May.

Leaf was accused of presenting an incomplete medical history to several physicians between January 2008 and September 2008 to get or try to obtain the painkiller Hydrocodone. He also allegedly forced his way into a Canyon apartment in October 2008 and stole Hydrocodone that had been prescribed to an injured football player.

Randall County District Attorney James Farren said he decided to drop the burglary charge after receiving a letter from the victim, a player Leaf coached at West Texas A&M, about three weeks ago.

"He's not happy about being a key factor in a criminal prosecution of his former coach," Farren said. "I suspect that he and most of the young men Ryan Leaf worked with ... want him to get some counseling and help. They care about him."

It was important to get the burglary charge dropped in the deal, Kelly said.

"It would have a very negative impact and might keep Ryan from going back to Canada because of the laws that are applicable in Canada," he said. "We need to get this behind him and get him on his way."

Farren said a "pattern" of abusing prescription drugs will lead him to include counseling and drug testing in probation terms he'll recommend to the judge.

If the deal is approved and Leaf successfully completes his probation there will be no convictions on his record; a record of his arrest would remain. If Leaf fails to meet the terms of his probation, he could face jail time, Farren said.

"If I were Mr. Leaf I'd want to make sure I can do this, that I can successfully complete this," he said. "He has a lot of exposure. "It could end up being a long time" in prison.

Leaf resigned in November 2008 in the middle of his third season as quarterbacks coach. Kelly said Leaf is "doing OK" and believes he is selling vacation packages to corporate clients at a resort.

I almost feel bad for Ryan Leaf.

The reason I said almost is because I'm a Chargers fan.

10 year probation? Another example... If it was a black man it would have been 10 years hard time.

Honey, it wouldn't matter if this happened with a black OR white man! If they aren't pro ball players, they are thrown in jail!

10 years of probation? Another clear example of sentencing inequity for the privileged.

I love when people are presented with a clear example of the inequality in our justice system and still pretend that its equal.
We all know that if Leaf was not white he would be the continual butt of robbery and drug addict jokes. Thats a given. This story would be relentlessly covered with a " SMH another one thug athlete "type tone.
Lastly he would receive actual jail time. Lets not forget that he went on the run after his last dope fueled break in.

Until equal value is placed on the lives of everyone, these type of thing will continue to happen.
When a cop runs over a black lady in ny then waits to sober up before a report is filed.
When a cop shoots an unarmed black man in NYC leaving he bachelor party ( Sean Bell ) because they heard he may have had a gun.
When you have video of a cop in San Fran shooting a pleading unarmed black man ( Oscar Grant ) in the back because he was too loud on the train.

Oh nevermind you get the point.

This strikes a nerve because I've had angry cops point metal at me twice.
Once I was accused of stealing my own car.

The other was a bachelor party that got to loud. Not an ounce of hostility from me in either instance.
I dont play the victim role. I just state facts and keep it movin.

Ryan Leaf in all his glory...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HmeA_vHjzY&feature=player_embedded And to think the same Chargers team said goodbye to Drew Brees when they did. And fire Schottenheimer to hire a dud like Norv Turner. Eli Manning was so smart not to go to that franchise.

10 years probation...too harsh of punishment. If Leaf did actually fudge his med Hx to try to get hydrocodone; he was risking using a drug that could have done him in if severe adverse reactions would have occurred.

What a sweet deal! A guy from my old neighborhood with NO priors got caught with a small amount of drugs and got 10 years, except 8 was served doing hard time with murderers, and two probation. This is yet another example of an anything-but-blind-justicial-system. And one of the primary reasons black males are unfairly over-represented in our penal colonies. This will only change when blacks and whites agree that the system stinks and needs to be completely deodorized. This denial game needs to stop....

The reason there are more blacks in prison is because they commit more crimes and most of their victims are black.White on black crime is very unusual but black on black crime is enormous.

White on black crime is not unusual. Who do you think some of the people that the white investment bankers, bankers, and mortgage bankers were fleecing over the past several years? These folks don't go to jail, they just pay fines and supposedly get banished from the industry. The problem with folks like you is you only think in one dimension. Yes it true the blacks get locked up more, but if white folks like Leaf are getting this type of treatment, it begs the question, why isn't Leaf going to jail? Ten years probation? Please.

That has to be the lamest argument I've heard in a long time. RusStyles was talking about sentencing inequity that is racially motivated and you introduce two totally unsubstantiated claims that have nothing to do with his post but just for the sake of exposing both your racism and your ignorance. Read Damiltantone's comment...read a book...read a newspaper why don't you.

Speaking of famous athletes getting off with crimes, did you hear that the tape of the nightclub footage of Ben Roethlisberger and his accuser was recorded over after detectives and the club's manager had watched it? How convenient!

Look up "Biggest NFL Bust in History" and there you'll find a picture of Ryan Leaf.

Tim Tebow isn't expected to do much so his failure will not be nearly as grand.

Someone call Art Schlister for the over under on if Leaf violates probation.

On point! That was a bad one. He was supposed to lead the Colts out of the dumpers but he disintegrated, instead.
I think he was slated to replace Bert Jones - Jones was one helluva quarterback. It wasn't until Peyton that the Colts got a quarterback.

Since when does someone who admits to buglary, a felony, gets 10 years probation?

Oh yes, I forgot; he's white.
