Karen Longoria And The Hometown Heroes Project: Town Builds Home For Her Disabled Family

While single mother Karen Longoria was working hard to raise her three children and wage her own battle with breast cancer, she was dealt another difficult blow. Two of her children were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a debilitating disease that left them confined to wheelchairs.

When Jim Kacmarcik, a local business man in their town of Grafton, Wisconsin, heard about the family's struggles, he rallied a Hometown Heroes campaign to raise money to build the Longorias a wheelchair accessible home.

Although the town was hit hard by the recession, Grafton residents nonetheless came out by the hundreds to donate their money and time to make this home renovation possible.

MSNBC's Ann Curry reports from Grafton Wisconsin.
