The Many Faces (And Arm Movements) Of Nicolas Sarkozy (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/30/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:00 PM ET

While Nicolas Sarkozy and his supermodel wife Carla Bruni have taken America by storm with their dazzling smiles and hip clothes, the French president showed an audience at Columbia University another side of him. Well, several more sides of him.

Like Charles de Gaulle before him, it seems Sarkozy is quite fond of using his arms to drive home his point. Couple that with his dramatic facial expressions and you've got a worthy challenger to Marcel Marceau's crown.

I'm a French native and I too gesticulate a lotttt and make all kind of faces...
Anglos are so "still", sometimes it drives me nuts, they keep their "cool" in situations where I think more should be expressed but I'm here to learn and not to judge...
But I know some people look at me as if I was crazy...when I'm just being latin...,)))
He on the other end is...oh well....he is who he is, he also happens to be French...

I love this guy. He's SO French!

Gesticulating is indeed very common in France, Italy and Spain.
As a French native with an Italian mother I would be hardly able to communicate if my hands were tied behind my back ! ...
This being said, let me tell you that Sarkozy is very much mocked in France for his facial tics and general agitation. He is often compared to some kind of obnoxious hyperactive child (the size helps !) and makes a very easy target for satirists and comedians...

I kind of like it...the expressive quality. In America the major expression is the smile. In Europe you do not see that as much, but when they do smile it is very warm. I find it all very interesting.

My wife is French, and it's dangerous for her to talk while driving!

French, Italian, Spanish, they all gesticulate more than Anglos.

Why don't "real Americans" - you know, the T-B'ers, at least admit "At least he doesn't use a teleprompter"!

At least there is no teleprompter.

The French they are a funny race.
They talk with their hands,
And they fook with their face.

Yeah, I seem to remember in the FIRST CHAPTER of my eighth grade French book it explained that the French use their hands a lot more when speaking. Has the author of this article ever been to France?
10:22 AM on 03/31/2010
Textbook correct. And Sarkozy particularly agitated.
04:25 AM on 03/31/2010
i bet, he was standing on a box.
