The iPad has been slammed by some as little more than 'a gigantic iPod Touch,' or 'oversized iPhone.'

So how does it stack up against the iPhone? Is it worth shelling out to buy Apple's new tablet?

We've put the iPhone and iPad head-to-head and found 9 features that the iPad has that the iPhone doesn't.

The iPhone 3GS is available with either a 16GB or 32 GB flash drive. The iPad offers both of those configurations, in addition to a roomier 64GB version (for $699, Wi-Fi only, or for $829, Wi-Fi and 3G).

I dont see the point of the iPad. I see people freaking out over it but seriously its hardly revolutionary.

So basically, it's an iPhone that won't make calls (without voip anyway), won't take photos, and won't fit in my pocket.

And btw, equating resolution with number of pixels is sloppy and inaccurate. Resolution is pixels per inch. For example, a 12" screen at 1024x768 is higher resolution than a 17" screen at 1280x1024. For iPad vs iPhone, it's a simple matter of doing the math, but too lazy right now...

The I-pad is a mobile device. It will take a beating and no doubt will be destroyed by the drops it takes. There is a reason why SLR cameras have straps!

It is too bulky to be treated as a paper file and it won't use any MS products.

What is the cost of the games, software? Many people will look at it as a big expense and only buy a few apps on try to find pirate if available.

I own an i-phone and it is great. The I-pad might be great if is was a real computer with a roll up (portable) OLED screen. But now it is a clunker. Mishandle it and it will be toast. It is a coffee table relic already with only the immediate perceptual benefit of the much media hyped "WOW' factor.

Geez, you can even use it as a phone. I can do that with my Asus laptop. It does not replace a laptop or my i-phone. I could use it to play chess on, which would be nice, I do admit.
10:16 PM on 04/03/2010
Now there's a niche: chess, checkers, and backgammon. Board games like Monopoly, Risk, and Scrabble would be interesting, but not sure how each player would hide his cards/pieces.

My whole family has iPhones, using the iPad as a public board, and iPod touches and iPhones as private "hands" could easily be done.

For monopoly example:
- "Tap to Roll dice" button on your iPhone rolls dice on the iPad,
- Card management screen on your iPhone with private data, iPad with public data.
- A bank screen that will allow for device to device transfer of "Money" and post a public notification to the iPad board "Player X payed $Y to Player Z".
- and so on.

But i think you run into a customer issue, because requiring additional tech is asking for unhappy customers that don't read app descriptions.

That's such a dumb list.

"The Ipad screen is bigger" Well, no s***.

1) More memory... yeah if you want to pay laptop prices. $500 gets you the same memory as an iPhone. That's a huge failure.

2) iBooks... yep, this is the #1 reason to buy an iPad. If you're not into iBooks, you're probably wasting your money.

3) Higher resolution... well, I'd sure hope so.

4) Larger keyboard... yet it's a pain to type while upright.

5) iPad-only apps... Well, Netflix sounds pretty cool, I'll give 'em that.

6) Larger screen area... see #3.

7) Cellular service with no contract... good, as long as you're in a 3G area.

8) More viewing options... mm, ok.

9) More speed... see #3 and #6.

A few cool features, but overall, this is probably the most overhyped tech product in recent memory.

If i may steal your post format gtx:
1) More memory... Every next gen iPad has more hard storage. So...big iPod

2) iBooks... Books are released in re-flowable ePub format. There is no technical reason you can't read books in itunes or on the iPhone, except that you wouldn't buy the iPad.

3) Higher resolution... Bigger screen, Bigger iPod

4) Larger keyboard... Bigger screen, Bigger iPod

5) iPad-only apps... The difference is mostly an interface file, and most apps will trickle down to the other devices. BTW the netflix app is coming to iPhone.

6) Larger screen area...Your kidding right?

7) Cellular service with no contract...They still made a self serving contract with AT&T with no demands of things like Mobile hotspot-ability, tethering, ect.

8) More viewing options...The mandatory horizontal is a restrictive policy i could live without. The two new interface widgets and viewport splitting are indeed cool.

9) More speed... It's a large next gen iPod.

Its a big iPod, but there's nothing wrong with that (except the price).
The real differences:
1) is 2 interface widgets and window layouts
2) Mandatory horizontal mode
3) larger screen
4) an updated iPod hardware profile + 3G possibility.
I'm an iPhone developer and Apple told us all right after the iPad announcement what the internal differences were.

If this was $99 or $199 i'd buy it. I would love to see a similar product added to the Mac product lines.

And how is this better than a much cheaper, more functional, higher multifunctional, and all around more practical netbook?
06:59 PM on 04/03/2010
They both still have AT&Ts crappy network. Enough for me not to buy it.

Gotta believe that the market for this product is going to fall into two camps:

1. Apple fanboys, who will buy i-ToiletPaper sight unseen if/when it comes out, and
2. Kindle/Sony readers, where the additional functionality in a similar form factor may make sense to some.

For those who want full functionality in a non-pocketable product, a netbook or laptop makes way more sense because they offer real keyboards and a variety of compatibility alternatives. And for those who want optimal portability, smart phones are clearly a better solution than this semi-luggable.

With the iPad, Apple tried to slice and dice the portable market into one too many segments. I have no doubt that the two customer bases above will generate sales for Apple. But the iPad-type product market will, IMHO, prove to be marginal compared to the other portable product segments.

Apple could make a tablet that works with Mac OSX has USB ports and a dvd or bluray drive and camera. It would be a heavier, a little hotter, less energy effieciant, and would be expensive. If i can use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse then it a small iMac i can touch.

I see no reason why i cant do the whole web surfing thing, movie watching thing on the couch via. I see no reason why Apple should get to control what apps i can and cant install or profit from them.

I should be able to use mouse only utilities like photoshop CS4 with a usb or bluetooth mouse or a "virtual Trackpad" after all they have a virtual keyboard.

This is an iPod, so its unreasonable to ask for that from this product, but an touch addition to the mac line would be well received.

Apologies for errors:
I see no reason why i cant do the whole web surfing thing, movie watching thing on the couch via touch and connect additional peripherals for more functionality. I see no reason why Apple should get to control what hardware/apps i can and cant install. Apple shouldn't profit from software they didn't design.

I like Apple products for a lot of good reasons, but I really do hope the competition pushes Apple to include a web camera as an option in all future models and a GPS in future 3G or 4G models.

It's time for AT&T and the other mobile service providers to quit dragging their feet and make nice with Skype.

I just can't see the reason for all this hype. The Ipad is bigger and faster than the Iphone! WOW! That is obvious..It is a phone not a computer wannabe. Who is gonna walk around with this thing in the gym, or supermarket. Everything else I will use my phone or itouch and if I am home I have a more than capable computer.

Who's gonna buy one this week and -not- walk around in public with it, every chance they get?

Why even compare it to an iPhone? It can't make or receive calls, has no flash support, no usb support, no webcam. Is apple trying to say people don't need voice communication? I just don't get it.
08:39 AM on 04/04/2010
its an extension of the iPod line (Toy) not the iPhone line (Tool with Toy side effects)
03:07 PM on 04/03/2010
Everything in this list is pretty obvious. While doing obvious lists, why not also do a 10-point comparison between the iPad and the MacBook?
08:58 AM on 04/04/2010
10 obvious things the MacBook Air has that the iPad doesnt:
1) More memory... MBA =120GB 2.5in or SSD, iPad 64Gb

2) Real Production Apps... MS Word, Bento, the real iWork apps, adobe apps.

3) Plug-ins... Flash, Silverlight, java, Ect.

4) Freedom...Download what you want, from where you want. Use your browser or text editor of choice.

5) USB... Use accessories not built JUST for your generation and product. Shocking!

6) Higher Resolution... bigger screen. outputs to 1080p externally

7) Larger keyboard... Indeed.

8) Open development... No $99 to code for it, Apple makes no money on your work, Apple cant block users from using your app.

9) More speed... Yup.

10) Mac OSX... Real OS, Real Tool, Real Flexability, Real computer.

now tell me...Why cant apple remove the keyboard and mouse, flip the screen around and add touch? Ill use blue tooth peripherals when touch isn't good for what i'm doing.

Plus, from the standpoint of ergonomics, I wouldn't want my head bending over a screen. I prefer to be eye level (more or less) with the screen.

Add this point to your most excellent list, which really should be published somewhere, because I suspect a lot of people are considering saving a few bucks and buying one of these iPads instead of a MacBook.

Finally, don't you have to pay AT&T for a monthly data plan for internet access with the iPad? Add that to your list of data charges.

I am perplexed about all the hoopla over this product. What is really motivating people to buy this? Is it because they spend huge amounts of time commuting on trains and buses and need a convenient portable device? Or is it the must-own uber-expensive gadget toy mentality? Or it's the most convenient device for going from meeting to meeting while being able to access your information? Or we have become so dependent on portable devices we want the most convenient one to carry that offers a broad range of apps?

Because I really don't get how this is all that practical of a device.

Whether fiction or non-fiction I read with a pencil to underline text and make notes. Cannot do this with an iPad unless they add a stylus, enough screen space on the "page" for notes and a means of saving the notes on the page.
