Duke Wins 2010 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Duke Tops Butler, 61-59, In A Thriller

Duke National Championship Butler

INDIANAPOLIS — The too-perfect basketball story with the too-perfect ending is still available on DVD. The real celebration for the new national champion – that's taking place on Tobacco Road.

Kyle Singler scored 19 points and Brian Zoubek rebounded Gordon Hayward's miss with 3.6 seconds left Monday night to help Duke beat Butler 61-59, ending the tiny underdog's try for a "Hoosiers" sequel one win short of the Hollywood ending.

The Bulldogs had a chance to win it at the end in an amazing sequence that defined this tournament. When Gordon Hayward's half-court shot at the buzzer went flying, thudded off the backboard and rim, and out and most of the crowd of 70,390 gasped, "Ohhhh." So close.

The Blue Devils (35-5) snapped Butler's 25-game winning streak and brought the long-awaited fourth national title back home to Carolina and the Cameron Crazies.

The "Big Three" – Singler, Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith – won the Big One for coach Mike Krzyzewski, his first championship since 2001 and the fourth overall, tying Coach K with Adolph Rupp for second place on the all-time list.

"First of all, it was a great basketball game. I want to congratulate an amazing Butler team and their fans," Krzyzewski said. "Fabulous year. We played a great game, they played a great game. It's hard for me to say it, to imagine that we're the national champions."

Nobody figured this would be easy, and it wasn't – no way that was going to happen against Butler, the 4,200-student private school that turned the tournament upside down and drove 5.6 miles from its historic home, Hinkle Fieldhouse, to the Final Four.

Butler (33-5) shaved a five-point deficit to one and had a chance to win it, when its best player, Hayward, took the ball at the top of the key, spun and worked his way to the baseline, but was forced to put up an off-balance fadeaway from 15 feet.

He missed, Zoubek got the rebound and made the first of two free throws. He missed the second one intentionally, and Duke's title wasn't secure until Hayward's desperation heave bounded out.

What a game to end one of the most memorable tournaments in history, the kind that could be history if the NCAA goes ahead with what an expansion to 96 teams – something very much on the table for next year.

"Both teams and all the kids on both teams played their hearts out," Krzyzewski said. "There was never more than a couple, a few points separating, so a lot of kids made big plays for both teams."

Nobody led by more than six.

Playing against the Bulldogs and working against a crowd of 70,390 with very few pockets of Duke fans, the Blue Devils persevered – never leading by more than six but never falling behind after Singler hit a 3-pointer with 13:03 left for a 47-43 lead.

The Blue Devils won with defense. Holding the Bulldogs to 34 percent shooting and contesting every possession as tenaciously as Butler, which allowed 60 points for the first time since February. Zoubek, the 7-foot-1 center, finished with two blocks, 10 rebounds and too many altered shots to count, but also came out to trap the Butler guards and disrupt an offense that was already struggling.

They won with some clutch shooting, including Singler's 3-for-6 effort from 3-point range and 6 of 6 from the free throw line in the second half until Zoubek's intentional miss.

They won with a mean streak, most pointed when Lance Thomas took down Hayward hard to prevent an easy layup. The refs reviewed the play and decided not to call it flagrant – one of a hundred little moments that could have swung such a tight, taut game.

Great game by two really good teams.

Too bad the Refs didn't get to see it.

Just got back from the Butler rally. Peyton Manning filmed a little speech for the boys and apparently Obama called earlier today to congratulate them. So sweet. My Bulldogs.

Congrats are due to Duke of course - but wow - that Butler team should be seriously proud of themselves. What an achievement.

You are all so happy with wonderful comments and compliments for both teams...

Duke sucks. And Coach K needs to lighten up on the make-up! Yuck!

Congratulations to Mike Krzyzewski and his team, but mainly to the coach.

Duke is the winner of the NCAA Basketball Championship. But, as was said by the announcer at the end, "Butler did not Lose".

Probably the most entertaining game I have ever watched. It might have gone the other way. In which case, Duke would not have 'Lost' either.

Hope to see more of this.

As Dan Patrick said on his talk show, the one thing surrounding the Butler Bulldogs' 2010 performance in the NCAA Championship that will repeatedly come back to haunt them will be "What if?"

Still, that does not diminish the fact that they more than held their own against Duke and gave as good as they got.

No comments on here regarding Coach K instructing Zoubek to miss his last free throw? It was that coaching decision that gave Butler the chance for a last second win. Pretty risky, I'd say.

IMHO, and I've watched most of the Duke games this year from my seat in Cameron, this game was scripted by K from the start. What else explains Zoubek's apparent inability to get one rebound in the first half, as opposed to dominating the boards against WVU? K wanted a "win" for good college basketball, and I believe he manipulated his players to ensure a good, hard fought CLOSE game so that both teams could be proud of their effort. And today that is the story line in all the media reports.

Did you watch the game? Coach K was visibly frustrated and nervous, as were many of the players. This was not some orchestrated "win for good college ball." This was an overprivileged, overhyped, "legendary" team that was nearly taken out by a bunch of sophomores from the Horizon League.

I've watched Coach K up close and live for 15 years, and what you saw last night was not him nervous or frustrated. Believe me, when K is anxious or frustrated, the players and fans within a 100 feet hear about it very clearly and he doesn't cover it up for the cameras.
He managed the game, so that everyone -and college basketball-could look like winners. If you read any of his books, he's all about some higher moral and ethical purpose to coaching and leadership. I don't always approve of that attitutde, but it is what he does.
Not taking anything away from Butler, they are a very good team, but Duke was better by a number of measures which is why Vegas lines all had Duke a 7 point favorite. And Coach K made sure that Duke did not cover the spread.

That said, yes, it's obvious Zoubeck intentionally bricked the second FT. It's a weird play, but Duke had at least 4 feet of height advantage, so betting that they'd get the rebound is probably safe. But, of course, they didn't get the rebound.....

On the post game interviews Coach K acknowledged that he had instructed Zoubek to miss the shot. Zoubek acknowledged he had missed the shot on K's orders. Thus, K intentionally gave Butler the opportunity to rebound and make a good shot to win the game. If Zoubek had made the second shot, Butler would have had to inbound, and make a three point shot in 3.6 seconds, just to tie the game. Even the Butler coach seemed surprised by the K's decision with that last play.

i LOVED THE WAY THEY WERE ALLOWED TO PLAY IT OUT.

However, Zuebek's forearm to Howards throat should have benched him! !

tough miss for Hayward too

Two terrific teams, two terrific coaches.

Too bad they couldn't get 3 adequate Refs.

Duke shouldn't pat itself too hard on the back for this win. They were taller, stronger, faster, more experienced, have a legendary coach and a decades-long recruiting program. Yet they only beat Butler by literally half an inch.

Great game, but a semi-circle for block/charge calls and Duke is back in Durham dissappointed.

Yep, the refs allowed for a more physical game which wound up favoring Duke.... although the one flagrantly bad call wouldn't have changed much.

Hayward driving, Scheyer clearly slides right leg out and refs call charging.
As a Butler fan, I'm glad it happened when it did--roughly ten minutes into the second half--because it didn't effect the outcome.

Bottom line though... another long, dry FG spell by Butler. Make just a couple and you're wearing rings.
02:03 PM on 04/06/2010
Yup. I don't know that Duke beat Butler so much as Butler beat Butler.

The Butler people shouldn't feel bad at all. They put on one hell of a game, and just fell a little short. No shame in that.

The only thing that worries me about them is that I'll be their coach probably has a lot of messages from other schools on his answering machine with offers to jump ship right about now. I hope the school can keep him. He did a fantastic job with his guys this year.

Can you say NIKE U Oregon has $200,000,000 new arena and Phil Knight needs a new coach!

Rumor says that they tendered $4 mil. To Tom Izzo!

Yeah, well the last Butler coach left for Iowa and he was just fired. There's no loyalty in with the big guys. Butler will love him forever.
