techcrunch.com:

Just one day after launch and there are already scores of complaints on the Apple support site over faulty wifi on the iPad. A typical complaint is that the iPad shows no wifi signal, or a very weak signal, where other devices pick it up just fine.

I surfed the net on my iPad while walking through every room in our home and around the outside as well. No wifi or any other problems. I suspect those reporting problems either 1) Have defective units that need to be replaced, 2) Have weak wifi signals (get Apple's Airport Extreme), 3) Are Apple haters making bogus reports.

The iPad has all but replaced my MacBook Pro. When a decent VNC app for iPad comes along the MBP is going into the closet to become a compute server. If you plan to live forever waiting for the next generation iPad might be okay. But why wait when there is no reason?

3G is the reason.

Not going to bash the fanboys this time, but just let me ask; how silly is it to buy an iPad when a newer 3G version with persistent AT&T WiFi is coming out at the end of the month?? Did you think you could trade the old one in?

Only in Apple world.

techcrunch is the only site reporting this. So that limits its credibility. Plus the damn things has 2 wifi antennas. one behind the apple and another else where.

Accepting that any first-gen product will have its hiccups, this still has the unseemly smell of FUD, given the total lack of actual widespread reports of this issue. I would never go to Arrington for objective commentary on the iPad.

As for tech issues, I've learned the hard way over the years to way for the 2nd gen to make up my mind. But G'damn if all the fan/hater wankery hasn't been worth the price of admission. Rage on, brothers, rage on.

When I bought my Kindle a couple of years ago most of the comments were just as they are here, nasty little snips from people who hadn't purchased one. That Kindle has more than paid for itself as a result in the price difference between the hard cover best sellers I would have purchased and the price I paid for their Kindle equivalents.

As for the iPad, I've ordered the 3G version which will allow me to do the same things I do on my original Kindle, my old iMac, and on my Verizon smartphone - only with more flair. Furthermore, I'll finally be able to dump my monthly Verizon 3G fees (return to my old simpler phone) and my DSS costs. The result will be a iPad paid for in about a year.

Does TechCrunch still have a stake in a competing product?

Does Wired.com get kickbacks from Apple? Totally.

But to answer you question:

Yeah, it's part of some large global conspiracy to get meek, weak Apple. Sure.

I loved this comment on the Tech Crunch Site...

"Just plug a WiFi key into the USB po….. never mind."

Hahahaha
09:41 AM on 04/06/2010
Why would you love that comment, the iPad is not a laptop. If you need USB, RS232, card reader slots, and such then get a laptop.

You just wait til it can connect to AT&T's 3G network. Then it will really be great!

In the meantime, just connect with an ethernet cable. Oh wait...
Well, at least you can just play DVDs. Oh wait...
Maybe connect via a USB device? Darn.

At this point, it looks like it's almost good enough to use as a bookmark, or possibly as a paperweight.

Best... product... evar!!!!

If you want a 3G version you better start saving up again! The one you bought last weekend don't support it!

Anyone who buys an initial launch of any software-driven device is really just a beta-tester.

But on the positive side, they get to pay a lot extra for it.

It's starting to seem that way.

I wonder where the QC department went to... oh, they were disbanded. It had cost too much.

Yo, Apple, it'll cost you far more in the long run if you don't do proper in-house testing. How could wi-fi be overlooked in this day and age?!!

*facepalm*

We Windows users have to deal with Microsoft's shameless use of their captive customer base as beta testers every single time they release an upgrade. The thing is, Apple users seem to be 1. happy about it and 2. willing to pay a ton of money for the privilege. iNuts, I call them (although aNuts would be more descriptive).
01:16 AM on 04/06/2010
Ya but Microsoft's products never really get out of Beta testing...

Paradise? Paradise of what?

I know ONE person that bought one of these things, and I asked him about it this morning. He claims he "loves" it. I asked him what he does on it.

His response? "Umm...I dunno, I poked around it some".

He hasn't DONE anything with it. Because there's really not a lot to do on one. Laptops or phones are better in each regard to whatever this thing can perform. It's nothing but a shiny toy that Apple has convinced him makes him more interesting as a person.

This guy bought one on the hope that one day a practical use for it will appear.

And yes, I can talk some trash about him, because he's an acquaintance, not a friend.

He's going to surf for pr0n, or read sports while sitting in the bathroom.

Doesn't seem like that's worth $500, but then again, $450 of that is worth it just to have an Apple logo on it.
