How sad! I can't believe that her husband didn't have life insurance, especially since his wife was a SAHM. That I don't understand. I hope the people in her community are able to continue to assist her as long as she needs it. How can something so tragic happen to one family? My heart aches for these children, especially if something happens to their mother. :(

I feel bad for any one who has to go through that. But let's look at this correctly...3 kids, young kids..how much life insurance did this guy have to care for them in case he were to die young...not from a surprise like this but from a car crash or something like that that happens everyday to normal health people on their way home from work....I hear ads everyday for term life insurace. I have one policy for 500k that costs me $410 dollars a year and I have 3 times that through work! If people do what they should to protect their families and don't look to everyone else when they have not taken the right steps we would all be better off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I feel bad for any one who has to go through that." You should have stopped right there. Everything you wrote afterward, disproves the first statement.

People who can only spew 8t and who lack empathy are the problem with our country. I just love how they brag about their "values" and yet prove over and over they have none. A lack of moral character has nothing to do with where a person was born, how much education a person has, or the amount of money that person has.

People do not wander around wishing to get ill. When it touches your life if you don't develop empathy something is terribly wrong. Yet surprisingly this past year I have seen more posts from people with a complete lack of empathy for those who are suffering.

I am happy I live in a country where the choice between illness and basics don't clash because we are all covered through our taxes.

This is a very sad story and should be a lesson to all. Obviously the husband had a good job in order for her to be a stay at home mom. Why on earth did the man not have life insurance? With small children it is a must for both parents to have life insurance.

We are all in this together

You are correct. Life is what happens to all of us while we are busy making other plans.

Assuming that the gentleman was not at high risk and his heart attack was acute onset, he could have purchased $500,000 of term life protection, for 20 years, at $35/month when he was 39.

Even thought we grew up relatively poor, I can still remember the life insurance salesman showing up every month to collect a couple of bucks from my dad.

That said, this is a terrible tragedy and the community should step up to the plate and help the family.

The world is upside down with people like Meg Whitman spending $59 million to try and secure the guv's seat in CA. Here's a woman with stage 4 cancer relying on friends and neighbors for money in one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Citizens have gone mad and only put themselves and their vast fortunes first it appears. Why isn't there a humane way to help this widow?
01:28 PM on 04/06/2010
Well, if Obama's plan for health care turns out like Massachusetts, well over half of all citizens will be relying on their "friends and neighbors" for donations for health care. These donations will come in the form of subsidies.

Wow, clueless you already pay for the poor every time they go to the hospital (It is called Medicade). By the way it costs less for people to go to doctors and get treated before it become so severe a hospital visit is needed.

And it depends on how you look at it. I care and feel compassion when I see any person in this woman's position. And I am happy for my tax dollars to go help people like her. And I would hope people would feel the same if it were me. But then I was raised to feel that way.

Hey Satu, how is that hope and change thing working out for you?

Nice reply Compassionate Conservative! I guess Repubs are ok with bailing out AIG's and big business in the hundreds of Billions due to their own regulatory neglect during the Bushy years and taxpayers paid for this corruption, but a "REAL" American needs help and who cares right? You and most of the blind Righties are sick and need to wake up! The fact that millions of Americans are struggling through no fault of their own seems to go right past your fat heads, while CEO's getting paid 100 million for running their companies into the ground is a great Capitalist idea huh?
Oh, that Hope and Change thing you make fun of, it's Democrats who are the ones who give a flying F about those in need (Medicare,SS and Healthcare Reform), so if this woman is going to get help, I would bet my last $ it will come from a Progressive Democrat!

Orange County, isn't that full of rich people? I hope this article gets some help for this family.
11:53 AM on 04/06/2010
Hi MsLiz. That's actually a pretty common misconception, based on shows such as The O.C., Laguna Beach and The Real Housewives of Orange County. Newport Beach, Laguna and some surrounding areas do quite well, but there is a wide expanse of the county (Santa Ana, Anaheim) where there is considerable poverty and a strongly affected middle class. It's not much different from Los Angeles County in these areas.

I'm from Orange County and the disparity is pretty wide between what the area is like and what television portrays.
