Martha Stewart Teaches Proenza Schouler To Tie-Dye Her Way (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/07/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 4:05 pm

Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler appeared on "The Martha Stewart Show" yesterday and Martha taught the boys how to tie-dye without actually tying or dying anything. It involved Simply Spray, some water, a little scrunching and pleating.
Spoiler: Martha's scarf turned out perfectly, but the best part is when one of the designers bemoans, "Mine is terrible, Martha!"

I really like this Simply Spray, she says it gives a tie-dye effect not a traditional tie-dye. Traditional tie-dye is a much more complicated process that requires fabric prep and lots of dye which when finished will be "disposed" of. This stuff is water based and propelled by nitrogen-Do your kids breathe air? Then they are breathing the same thing. Paint and dye do not need "adhesive binders" in them to work. You should have investigated this product more before making these claims.

This is NOT the way to "tie dye" in the classic sense, which uses normal die (usually rit or procion) and rubberbands.

Martha, what are you thinking????

Why do Martha's projects have to be instant? I'd rather use a real dye instead of a paint to do tie dye any day. She's using paint. Paint covers a surface with an adhesive binder or adhesive type medium (a binder like glue) like wall paint. Dye is a molecular process. Paint will sit on the surface and will not be soft. It's like spraying your hair with hair spray. Ugh! Dharma Trading offers dyes for tie dye that are easy and the colors will stay vibrant and last forever. Also that spray paint stuff she's using goes up into the air and can be inhaled. I wouldn't use that for my children's projects. A tie dye can be simple. Using rubber bands, and using just one or two colors for a great effect. Doesn't have to be brain surgery.

Lots of people like projects that are quick and uncomplicated...like me! I've used it to make t-shirts and pillows. The Simply Spray fabric paint is water-based so it really is more like a dye than a paint. Non-flammable, non-toxic, and non-stinky! It's nothing like the thick spray paint that you would use to paint a chair or anything like that. You should try it, you may like it!
