Michelle Obama Mixes Many Prints (PHOTO)

First Posted: 06/07/2010 5:12 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 4:05 pm

Michelle Obama mixed many prints in her ensemble at a discussion on childhood obesity today. We spy stripes, squared, flowers and leaves. The key to pulling it off? Don't go crazy with colors at the same time. Here, FLOTUS keeps it simple with black, blues and white. Her cardigan is by L'Wren Scott. The blouse underneath is by Talbots.

Re: The Outfit of First Lady Michelle Obama...wonderful! It is daring, chic, beautifully co-ordinated, classy and she is among the best dressed First Ladies of this century, setting a precedent for fantastic daring style and beauty. First Lady Jackie Kennedy was, in my estimation the classiest dresser. First Lady Michelle Obama is not only a "fashion plate", but is a lady of courage in her initiation of daring programs to address the health problem of obesity in Americans. First Lady Hillary Clinton is another example of a woman in the White House who cared about more than just being in the White House, as so many of the former first ladies did.

I love the outfit. This style skirt really works for someone who is tall. Since I'm not, I couldn't wear it. But I love the mixing of patterns that you see in clothes now. You have to know what patterns work well with others. The skirt with the tiny pattern works well with the larger patterns on the blouse and sweater. Cardigans are worn close to the body. Since she's small at the top and has really great arms they look good on her, IMO.

Luv The First Lady.

Oh no! It's way too much going on here. Too many prints!! If the skirt is a must her top and sweater need to neutral and toned down. Maybe red shoes would be better too?

Now this is daring, and she pulled it off well! Bravo! As long as she stays away from those high wide belts she's a winner.

If you can overlook that it's not bad... but yes why green?

who designed the skirt? sweater looks good. but the skirt is awful

I like the shoes- colored flats are totally comfortable, practical and add a little zing to the outfit.

That said, this is not my personal favorite ensemble, but I think that mixed patterns are very in right now. I personally wouldn't have mixed this particular combo, but hey! everyone, including Michelle Obama, should just get to wear what they want without being attacked!

I mean, come on people! How small minded is it to attack someone for what color SHOES she is wearing! Or a cardigan? Or - even more stupid and small minded- the SIZE of the cardie???? I mean seriously, you people DO see how SILLY you sound, right???

Personally I like it when things aren't too matchy-matchy. You just keep on doing what you like Michelle. As long as you're happy and your husband is proud of you and loves how you look ( which he obviously is) and you're a good role model for your girls (which you obviously are) don't pay any attention to the haters!

There is no way around this one...this is one ugly outfit.

Way too fussy and what is up with the green shoes?

The woman has no taste. Deal with it, Michelle Lovers.

I love that "woman" that "has no taste" she is not you cookiecutter expectation by any stretch of the imagination wish. I love her sense of style. Deal with this bit of news if you haven't gotten it yet over the past two years...Mrs. Obama is not a wasp, not a traditional woman, she's different in everyway to all those who've gone before her. It's the 21c babe, deal with it!!

being different does not =bad taste

Hey Mirta,
Someone who buys her clothes at Walmart is in no position to judge fashion. How do like those polyester pants suits you're wearing?

I like the skirt it reminds me of a dirndl style both comfortable and feminine and easy to wear. I don't care for the color of the shoes but they also look comfy and there's a lot to be said for that. Some of the latest trends in shoes look like something out of a torture chamber.

I'm the last person who should be giving anybody style advice, but there is something to said about basic black shoes. Perhaps green is the new black and I just haven't caught on yet, which is not really that far fetched.
02:18 PM on 04/08/2010
Basic black shoes with that outfit would be boring - the green shoes are cool.

I really like the color of the shoes offsetting the mute colors of the outfit. For those of you highly critical of the outfit not being "matchie-Matchie", know that the rest of us "hope" that the "change" of shoe color will work for you too.

ROTFLMAO!!! You've said it best!!!

I stopped commenting on these threads a while ago, but I just HAD to say something about these latest fashion/beauty attacks against Mrs. Michelle Obama, First Lady of The United States. I find it comical and sad that you people continue to denigrate the color of someone's shoes. Really? Are you serious? Hasn't Mrs. Obama's sense of style taught you anything yet? She clearly loves being comfortable, colorful, and different--something we should all strive towards. She is such a high intellectual and beautiful woman that she actually down plays her fashion sense so that she doesn't come off as too powerful--she already exudes power and chooses not to put it on full tilt to make YOU ALL uncomfortable. But, every now and then she puts the smack down on you like the Poetry Slam outfit and some of her couture wear. If this woman dressed the way she CAN everyday, you pitiful folks wouldn't know what to do with her. Find me another First Lady who has had such an impact on fashion, children, and women in the past 50 years. I thought so.

The mixed prints are working well but whats up with the GREEN shoe selection? I love me some Michelle but she definitely has fashion woes...As for Jackie O'....well she dressed she was for sure...but it was a different era.

Love your enemy --- it messes with their heads!!!
08:14 AM on 04/08/2010
Agreed...Michelle's fashion style does not do it for me...but every now and again she has her moments. However, mixing prints is okay, if you want to do that...but can't the shoes match the ooutfi...color wise? As First Lady, I think she needs to step it up a bit...she looked a "hot" mess a few weeks ago when she went to New York to see a play?????? I love Michelle, she is beautiful, intelligent and seems like a very nice person....guess you can't have everything!!! Her style of fashion is lacking.
