Along the same lines, check out Overcoming Consumerism at

www.verdant.net

"*Use cooking or salad oil for lubricating non-essential mechanical things like hinges, tools etc. A light coat of oil will keep tools from rusting and you don't need to buy expensive and toxic chemicals like WD-40 etc. "Oh WD-40 isn't toxic" a reader writes. How do we know? It's a secret proprietary forumula.

* Placing plates or coffee mugs on the middle of the stove-top above gas pilot lights pre-warms them with otherwise wasted heat. If the burner grills prevent contact with the hot metal surface, use a small piece of old ceramic tile or metal to conduct the heat up to the bottom of the cup or plate.

*Use the stream of warm air that exits at the bottom front, of most refrigerators, to dry small rugs, warm your feet etc. Why do you think the cat sleeps there?

* Slices of wine corks can be used as door stops, pads or to replace broken bumpers between toilet lids and seats or doors and walls. Make sure to leave enough thickness to account for the compression of the cork."

There are some good sites which scrape the real bargains at the online stores, most of which don't separately list the clearance stuff. The Discount Sorcerer - http://www.discountsorcerer.com - does it for Amazon, for example.

When did you guys actually ask people to recommend these sites? I don't remember seeing anything about that. This is just a sophisticated form of product placement and I would like to know how much this site received to be put on that list. This isn't helping customers, it's mere shilling.

The best places for comparative shopping are Google.com shopping and Paypal.com shopping. Why? They pretty much aggregate anything you could possibly shop for. Also you can filter the results by price, et cetera. Of course, if you are with Paypal check out is even easier for you. Google shopping is even more extensive than Paypal shopping. You can also filter for free shipping, and you can filter for Google checkout only. Personally, I find it a little more convenient and safer to Paypal sites or sites that have Google check out. You do not have to keep putting in credit card information. And with Google checkout you are able to track your shipments from there rather than having to track it from the vendor site. I feel the vendors that sign up with Paypal and Google checkout are a little more responsible because they could also be dropped from Paypal and Google checkout participation. As far as saving money by shopping online. Yes, you can. If they are purchases, you were going to make anyway. For instance, I have decided that certain items, I will get from drugstore.com. It is way convenient for me to get the items from them, and so far I have not had to pay shipping. I've gotten the items on sale. Besides that drugstore..com has been offering extra discounts for repeat shopping.

My favorite coupon and money savings sites are Retailmenot (http://www.retailmenot.com) for the user posted coupons and LiliDeals (http://www.lilideals.com) for the automatic cash you get back for shopping through their site.

Many of the sites you list in this article are on my favorite shopping comparison site Shop.com. That's how I found about how awesome 6pm.com is. I like shop.com because it's more user-friendly than amazon.com plus they have really cool contests. They are giving away an iPad, man!! Look: http://www.shop.com/sweepstakes-a.xhtml

their tagline is Shop Smart, Save Big...so I know they're about saaving me$$$. anyway check it out, great site in my opinion.

I also really really LOVE retailmenot. I always find coupons there I can't find anywhere else...

dealmac.com has the latest deals on everything Macintosh. Their tagline is refreshingly upfront: "How to go broke saving money."

tigerdirect.com is as inexpensive as newegg.com

We bought a build-your-own computer kit for $400 that would have cost over $1000 if it had come pre-assembled.

That's not a good deal at Woot and it's a "Refurb".
I got a brand new LG BD-live Blu-ray player with Netflix, You Tube, from Amazon for only $39 bucks.
There are always better deals out there.

Link to the Amazon page, please? I can't find anything that inexpensive based on your description. Thanks.

Otherwise, Woot often has amazing deals. I love my Sansas, and I have several Phillips DVD players that play .avis (one on each TV, in both my home and my grandmother's). I love their shirts, too.

Shopping does not equal saving money. Too bad HuffPost degrades itself with stupid things like this.

This is hardly a stupid article. Anytime you can save money is a good thing. I suppose you subsist on air, grass and leaves.
04:35 PM on 04/07/2010
You're right this article makes a lot of sense. Yes, save money by spending money. Let's all go downtown and save money by spending money. Hey let's save gas my driving down hill. Let's conserve energy by closing the door and opening a window. You are a genius! Thanks, DredLockRasta!

Shopping SMART and inexpensively does equate to saving money, esp. if it's on items you'd buy anyway.
05:33 PM on 04/07/2010
Look I'm guilty of going to a site similar to the ones posted. I know from experience that looking at "great deals" just makes me buy more crap I don't need. It does not save me money.

If your kid came and said "buy me this ipod it's $50 off so it's only $200" and you bought him the ipod you did not just save $50 you lost $200!

Wake up.

There is a great site for spa deals in nyc: http://www.25Tuesdays.com Every Tuesday a new spa offers a spa deal for just $25. I got a full facial at a great spa for $25 and loved it.
