NEW iPhone OS 4.0 FEATURES: Multitasking And More

Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/08/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:05 PM ET

Steve Jobs unveiled a new iPhone operating system--iPhone OS 4.0--at an Apple event in Cupertino.

Among other features, the forthcoming iPhone OS will include multitasking, a new mobile advertising platform (iAd), enterprise features, Apple's iBooks app, and more.

When (and on what gadgets) will iPhone OS 4.0 be available? According to Apple, it will be making the updates available to all iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad models, although some features will only be available on the more advanced models--for example, while iPhone 3GS users will be able to enjoy the full array of upgrades, iPhone 3G users won't have access to the multitasking function. The new software should be released later this summer for the iPhone and iPod touch. It will also be coming to the iPad this fall. Generally, Apple makes such updates available for free as a download.

Check out some of the key features that will be offered with the next generation of iPhone software in the slideshow below.

Multitasking

Apple outlined seven multitasking services: background audio streaming, Voice over IP, background location, push notifications, local notifications, task completion, and fast app switching.

Dear Friends,

Apple's new iPhone is anticlimatic to say the least. Other than the sleek look, all of the features Jobs mentioned are already out there. Tech Geeks already have programs such as video recording, folders, etc months ago via jailbreak. Apple is just copying the geeks - that's why they haven't really try hard to cut off the jailbreakers. I was hoping that Apple created the new phone to be portable with any network, but apple is locked in with AT&T until 2012. Video chat? what a joke, AT&T will break your bank and/or throttle their service. Apple should have made the new phone to work on Sprint 4G network. the Apple 4 phone is not a 4G.. it's still only works on 3G network of AT&T. super slow..I am disappointed..

Android does what the iPhone simply dosnt. All of you make big fusses about all of these things that you should of had years ago. Android listens to its users. Statistically you guys have a higher satisfaction rate but whats more satisfying then complaining and seeing results? Apple does things on its own time. Its time that you got fed up with your one phone, one carrier and one ruler. Who wants a draconing future?

Come to the Android side. We have freedom. I mean have you even seen Androids latest release? If you missed the google convention you can bring your self up to speed at

"Generally, Apple makes such updates available for free as a download"
Yeah... for iPhone users. Not for iPod Touch users!!!
For us, Apple generally makes such updates available for $10 as a download... every... frickin'... time...

i don't know what the big hype about apple is all the do is take old tech put it in a new package and call it a (I) something just like the operating system x based on the old unix platform the only thing apple is good at is deceiving people into thinking they are on the cutting edge of tech lol

Riiight ... that must be why Apple's notebooks get double the battery life of their windows counterparts. Because they're using old technology. :)

Or why their touch screens destroy everyone else's in test after test.

And it must also be why HTC and Google ripped off more than 20 of Apple's patented technologies just to create a me-too wannabe smartphone that tanked in the market.

Next joke.

Um, OS X isn't called "(I) something" so you've contradicted yourself. Of course OS X is based on UNIX but it isn't just old tech in a new package; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X

How about making a freaking phone that doesn't drop a call?

If I am not mistaken, the phone really does not drop the call. It is dropped by the network to which the phone is connected and due to the lousy signal being sent. There is one section of Katy Freeway (IH 10 west) in Houston in which the call always drops when you drive through it. There is another section about 50 miles west of that one in which the same thing happens again.

That's like saying "How about they make a computer that doesn't get a virus..."
LOL!

I thought Apple was going to announce the new iPhone as well? Does anyone know when they will announce the new one?

Thanks!

There's an awful lot of pi.mping for apple going on here every day.

For a company that pioneered sending US jobs overseas, they get a lot of free press

It's because people read and comment on them at the highest rate. That's how HP gets money. You'd do it too if you owned HP

Somebody, pls, explain what multitasking is to Steve Jobs! Windows Mobile phones have had multitasking for years!

who cares... Let me go out and rush and get one of those windows phones. I guess you also like the HP slate with windows 7 over the iPad because of multitasking right.

Duh, yea.

No flash, but we get iad. Are you f#$@in kidding me! Seriously. I want to like the IPad, and Ipod touch, but I do online collage courses that are Flash based. Without the flash, it is useless to me, and I will have to go with the slate when it comes out.

Flash is going away. The slate is a one sided notebook with windows 7.... just compare the 2 commercials.

I'd like to know how you figure that flash, the industry standard by a long shot, is going away anytime soon. The problem still remains that Cisco systems (the giant in networking) has set up their collage courses in flash (all 8 semesters). The interactive segments, and exams are all flash based. The slate being a one sided notebook or not becomes irreverent if it's the only game in town to support the industry standard.

I have a Mac computer, but have to boot into Windows to run the Cisco simulation software as no one makes a Cisco simulator for the Mac, as Macs are almost never used by IT departments. Even in heavy Mac oriented companies, in the background, you will find a pc running server software, mostly windows server.

Just because Steve Jobs has been holding a grudge against Adobe for releasing PC versions earlier then Mac versions (due to Apple deciding to make competing software) doesn't mean that Adobe is going anywhere soon. Remember, Apple still is the tiny minority in the computer industry. The industry supports what the PC market wants, and the PC market gets to decide what will be the standards, not the other way around.

stay ahead of the curve and start doing collages that work on the iPad. It will be sick. The slate is just iPad Killer #001.. this is very predictable. Kindle will have an iPad killer in 2012 so you know it's not going to be called the slate killer.

It's the Cisco coarse (you know, they king of networking company). They are hosted by Cisco, and they have done all 8 semesters in flash, and have invested a considerable amount of money making those coarse in flash. And since Cisco really doesn't care too much about apple, I don't think they are about to switch. So, if a collage wants to teach Networking, their students are going to either have to use a regular pc, a laptop, or a slate.

Cisco does offer their study books in Kindle format (or at least they have started to), but the actual interactive lessons, and exams are all done through flash.

Apple's inventions may be ingenious but they are wreaking havoc on our homes--they will never be the same. I explain here:

I still prefer to read real books. If at some point, a book reader comes out that doesn't bother my eyes, I would consider using it. I love books, but not the dust and mold that go along with them siting on shelves in your home for years.
